...to order clothes online at the moment

On one hand I’ll be supporting businesses with my £s and dcs have grown out of last year’s summer clothes (ie shorts and T-shirt’s) they’ve also grown out of their jeans and sandals.
But if I order it’s more delivery workers driving and people having to work in warehouses etc.

I think for someone just browsing for some new clothes out of boredom it's a bit more of a grey area because like you say, should you be supporting businesses or protecting delivery and warehouse employees but also putting them at risk of being furloughed.
For you, however I think it's justified. Your kids need clothes right? I think most people would agree it's an essential item.

A friend of mine works for M&S and they have but stringent procedures in place in the distribution centre to ensure that everyone is safe.
Online retail is also keeping businesses going, if we all stop buying the things we needs the only shops left will be supermarkets

The Wine Society (not clothes obviously!) actually stopped deliveries for a few weeks to review their practices and put in place safe practices in their warehouses. I ordered wine from a local wine merchants in the meantime and am now getting my Wine Society case in the next week so will be well supplied now for a good few months!

I think supporting responsible retailers is a sensible thing to do to keep the economy going. How people are affected really varies, DH and I both work in key industries so if anything have more disposable cash per month at the moment (no commuting costs, childcare costs, sports club costs, holiday costs!). So I feel like we should keep spending in a way that supports good small businesses.

I just ordered a beach dress from Accessorize as they had 30% off it. The thing is that I want to support my favourite stores, I don't want them to close down.
I also supported a local jewellery boutique by ordering my mum a necklace for her birthday which the lady owner delivered gladly.

I did from Debenhams, purely to use my gift cards in light of their administration news

If they need clothes then you have to order. Just now I've placed an order for my youngest. She's nearly 7 months and the baby gros she's wearing won't last another month so ordered the next size up.

Ethelfleda · 06/04/2020 16:19

You wouldn’t be unreasonable to order for this purpose, OP.

In general I think this is a grey area. I haven’t ordered anything myself but I’m toying with the idea of ordering some stuff to spend some money! So I will be watching this thread with interest.

PersonaNonGarter · 06/04/2020 19:19

Please order whatever you need to! People need jobs and the economy needs us to spend.

It is for the business to protect its staff, which they should be doing. If not then that lack of care is the issue, not your order.

I’ve ordered 2 pairs of jeans - I don’t have enough comfy jeans to wear every day in my normal wardrobe, which is at least 75% workwear! My one pair of comfy and flattering jeans are being worn daily and I need to wash them.

Keep the money flowing through the economy. Order away. It doesn't have to be essential stuff either.

I honestly didn't realise this was a thing. That is, not ordering so that people aren't over worked. I am not sure that is how we keep an economy running. These are good jobs for a lot of people.
