Fireworks ever Thursday at 8pm

Herts6789 · 05/04/2020 23:11

I am 100% on board with supporting out NHS workers and carers. The 8pm applause the last two weeks has been amazing and quite emotional.
The first week, a few fireworks were let off. As the owner of a nervous rescue dog I was irked but brushed it off as a one off.
Then the second week. Fireworks again and a shaky wreck of a dog all night, again. AIBU to expect not to have fireworks in a highly residential area once a week for the foreseeable?

So vote:
YABU: add fireworks to the NHS applause every week.

YANBU: Keep fireworks to guy Fawkes, divali and new years.

That would piss me right off.

bridgetreilly · 05/04/2020 23:15

No! WTAF. It's not a bloody party every week.

navteexo · 05/04/2020 23:18

No need for fireworks. Nothing exciting happening, and nothing to celebrate. Clapping is just fine

TillyTheTiger · 05/04/2020 23:21

I don't think fireworks should be let off by the general public under any circumstances at all. Only by licence to professional displays with safety certificates, with advance notice to the local community.
Love the clapping though!

Shinyshoes2 · 05/04/2020 23:22

Where is everyone supposed to get these fireworks from .
Imagine assuming they're not just laying around in your shed
YANBU and animals get very anxious around firework night..can you imagine every week ??

Herts6789 · 05/04/2020 23:27

Shinyshoes2 god knows! But two weeks on the trot there have been.
Bizarrely haven't seen any noise about it on local Facebook groups, when usually around guy Fawkes there is all sorts of complaining. Makes me wonder if no one wants to speak up for fear of being shot down as not supporting our key workers. If it happens again I might have to be 'that person'

To be honest it’s a celebrity appreciation for key workers. If just 1 of those fireworks is loud enough so that a key worker hears it and feels pride and thanked for doing there job, well it’s worth it. Your dog will get over a few fireworks but the country might not get over deflated, under appreciated, under paid nhs workers thinking sod it....... People don’t care they don’t abide to social distancing or the rules so why on earth should I risk my life.

CruCru · 06/04/2020 00:49

Problem is, if the fireworks cause fires, the firemen have to come. Any people who are burnt will need a nurse. Fireworks make work for the people everyone claps for.

user127819 · 06/04/2020 01:52

YANBU, fireworks every week is unfair on people with animals, people with children and anyone who needs to be asleep at 8pm. As is the banging of saucepans and drums. Can't we just stick to clapping?

Reginabambina · 06/04/2020 01:53

They should be donating the money spent on fireworks to the NHS. People should be finding ways to actually support NHS workers instead of virtue signalling.

daisypond · 06/04/2020 01:59

No fireworks. They might create more work for emergency services. Also they may distress or wake people of all ages. I can’t imagine a shift worker being happy with them.

WankStainWasher · 06/04/2020 02:16

Visit the Fab Firework campaign website. They’re asking people to log every time they hear fireworks as it helps with their campaign. They were issuing warnings before the first clap that there may be fireworks. People banging pots and pans and lighting bonfires too. Idiots. All the wildlife with their young this time of year are also affected.

What if it wakes up a key worker who is due to start later that night?

That's the thing about key workers- they're key all the time even when we don't realise they're there. That means shift work.

Myyearmytime · 06/04/2020 06:55

It is getting light at 8pm now so hopefully there will be no point soon.

Carbosug · 06/04/2020 07:15

Yes that's all the hospitals need right now - people coming in with burns and taking up valuable time and resources.

Why do some people always have to over do everything?

ErrolTheDragon · 06/04/2020 07:21

What a bloody stupid, ill- considered idea.Confused no doubt 'meant well', but it's antisocial and idiotic.

captainprincess · 06/04/2020 07:36

This is fucking ridiculous and I really feel for you OP My dog also is terrified of fireworks and very fortunately we haven't had fireworks (yet) but I would upset and cross if we did. Firstly it's bad enough around firework and New Years but at least I can prepare for it. Secondly these people letting them off must be a special kind of stupid as it's not even dark at 8pm now!!
I'm also not on board with the clapping, but that's for another thread (and yes I work the NHS)

Furrydogmum · 06/04/2020 07:39

There were display grade fireworks going off around here at 9.30 last night (Sun) bloody pain in the arse!!!

Freeshavocado · 06/04/2020 07:45

Same here OP, DDog1 has epilepsy and has been a nervous wreck the last two Thursdays, people are normally complaining all over the local fb group around bonfire night but not a peep from anyone this time.

Redwinestillfine · 06/04/2020 07:47

A lot of key workers seem not to be on board with the clapping. The first week it was nice but it's seems to have brought out the worst in some people. Key worker family here.

SteamingTheDoorKnobs · 06/04/2020 07:48

it’s a celebrity appreciation for key workers. If just 1 of those fireworks is loud enough so that a key worker hears it and feels pride and thanked for doing there job, well it’s worth it a key worker, like my close friend who is a nurse, is more likely to be totally missed off that they've been woken up by idiots setting off fireworks. Not to mention the terror caused to wild animals, farm livestock and domestic pets. Just clap if you must, but ffs stop with the explosives.

Patterjack · 06/04/2020 07:52

Keep them for Bonfire Night..my poor dog would be beside herself. We haven't had anything beyond clapping yet.

Hingeandbracket · 06/04/2020 07:56

YANBU but I don't go along with the 99% of Mumsnet that wants a total ban.

Fireworks every Thursday is totally unreasonable though.

PanicOnTheStreets85 · 06/04/2020 08:00

It's bonkers. There are so many accidents involving fireworks every bonfire night, why would anyone set them off at a time when we are trying to minimise pressures on the NHS?

Also, as others have said it will probably wake up key workers who are sleeping before a night shift.

Anyone who thinks fireworks are a good idea as part of the clap is an idiot IMO.

Darbs76 · 06/04/2020 08:01

We had fireworks too, and a trumpet player playing the last post! I hope they’ve learnt something a bit more upbeat for next week. No need for fireworks, plus any accidents emergency services are busy enough
