AIBU to think my son should see the doctor

My son is 20, he has discomfort in his groin and he has told me there is a swelling in his right testicle. I think he needs to see the doctor (not sure if this is possible) or go to the walk in centre ASAP. He doesn’t want to go as he feels he wouldn’t be referred for tests due to the pressure on the health service at the moment, so he’s going to wait it out until things get back to some kind of normal. Am I being an anxious Mum or is he being an idiot?

He needs to go now, it could be nothing but it could also be very serious torsion is a medical emergency.
Make him go, it’s hard just now but the nhs is still there, and I’m sure they’d rather see this sooner than later. Hopefully it’s nothing but I would absolutely get this seen ASAP -

BlackeyedSusan · 05/04/2020 21:22

needs to be seen asap.

Standrewsschool · 05/04/2020 21:25

Make him go.

RoseDog · 05/04/2020 21:26

A&e asap for a swollen testicle, could be twisted and the sooner it's looked at the more likely it can be saved!

CrocodilesCry · 05/04/2020 21:27

He needs to be seen - could be testicular torsion which is an emergency

PurpleDaisies · 05/04/2020 21:27

This needs seeing urgently.

BananaPlant · 05/04/2020 21:28

He needs to be seen.

Flowersforpowers · 05/04/2020 21:29

Needs to get it seen. The doctor won't refer him for unnecessary tests, he shouldn't worry about being a burden when he has a genuine, urgent, medical problem.

nowisreallynottherighttime · 05/04/2020 21:31

He’s not in agony, but has had a dull discomfort mainly in his groin for a few days. He’s now asked me to make him a GP appointment but he’s not registered here any more he’s registered at his university practise, so will they see him as a temporary resident or should we just try the walk in centre? I think he’s scared, I’m scared! He’s got it into his head that if it is anything bad he wouldn’t get treatment anyway because of the Corona Virus. Shit, what am I going to do with him.

OP posts:
BananaPlant · 05/04/2020 21:32

Of course he’ll get treatment if he needs it. As a nurse I’m telling you to get him seen.

PinkiOcelot · 05/04/2020 21:34

I would get him to see someone. If it’s nothing, then his mind (and yours) will be at rest.
I can see what he means though, about the nhs at the moment.

Reversiblesequinsforadults · 05/04/2020 21:36

He will get seen and if it's serious, treated. The health service is still working well. Please get him to go.

titchy · 05/04/2020 21:36

He can still go to A and E! He'll just be asked some CV questions first.

RoseDog · 05/04/2020 21:36

He will most definitely get treatment, you can't be leaving swollen testicles!

Theredjellybean · 05/04/2020 21:42

You need to ring nhs 111, GP services are all now via telephone or video consultantion.
Where I work we would definitely want to do a video consult and get a history from your son.
We may then decide to see him facs to face or refer him straight to surgical team at hospital.
Either way.. Yes he needs to have contact with GP.
best way currently tonight is nhs 111.
Id be surprised if any walk in centre is still running.. We closed our three weeks ago.

juls1888 · 05/04/2020 21:42

If it gives you any kind of reassurance, I'd try minor injuries/walk in rather than your GP as IME at this time, they are more likely to see you in person, and obviously this needs seen rather than a telephone or video consultation. His future fertility could rest on this so please don't allow him to take it lightly.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/04/2020 21:42

I'm a nurse as well. If it's a torsion it's a Surgical emergency and he needs to be seen ASAP. He could loose his testicle.

enjoyingSun · 05/04/2020 21:45

It needs to be check out:

www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/testicular-cancer-care/symptoms-causes/syc-20352986

www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/testicular-torsion/symptoms-causes/syc-20378270 - with my family members - very painful immediately - and obvious signs something was lobsided but it should be ruled out by a medical professional as it is serious and time dependent.

111 is still there, A & e are still open and GPs are still seeing some people - so he will get treated and seen to.

BumpADump · 05/04/2020 21:57

A & E

nowisreallynottherighttime · 05/04/2020 21:59

He’s not in severe pain, so from what I’ve read it doesn’t sound like a torsion. I’m going to try and get him to go to the walk in centre first thing in the morning, if he won’t go I’ll try the GP and see if they will see him as a temporary resident.

My GP is still doing referrals after a telephone consultation.
I called them on Friday and spoke to someone the same day.
He can get an appointment with your GP by registering a temporary address. We’ve done this on holiday before when my DD had an ear infection and needed antibiotics. We were on holiday in the UK, called a local GP and registered with them using our caravan site as our temporary address.
Please get him an appointment to get the ball rolling.

Theredjellybean · 05/04/2020 22:03

@juls1888 and evetyone else saying go to walk in.. They have been closed.
Go surgeries are closed.. And GPS are doing phone and video.. Most areas now have what is called Amber clinics.. So anything the gp thinks needs face to face is sent there. They are operating with ppe kit and full deep clean after each patient.

Walk in centres would be a disaster... People just walking in and sitting in a waiting room.. Is not social distancing.. And would put staff and public at huge risks.

Everything is going through 111 in many areas, and certainly tonight.

In the morning he could call your gp and ask for consultation as a temp resident.. But he will not just get an appointment to go in... He will be tel or video consultanted and triage first.

Greenmarmalade · 05/04/2020 22:06

Agree with pp to call 111.

Has he been cycling?

Distressingtimes · 05/04/2020 22:27

I’ll try the GP and see if they will see him as a temporary resident

They will register him as a TR but are mostly doing telephone or video consultations at the moment or asking you to send a photograph.

Didiplanthis · 05/04/2020 22:33

GP surgeries are NOT closed please dont spread that around - it's dangerous and stops people seeking help when needed. Everyone will be triaged by phone but if a face to face appointment is needed it will be arranged. Most places are developing hot (covid) hubs and cold (non covid) hubs. People still get all the non covid stuff and will get seen if needed for acute or emergency things.
