To ask if you believe in fate?

I’m feeling quite reflective I guess, I applied for an assistant head job at another high school - I didn’t get it. Nothing I did exactly but another candidate performed better in the interview.

I’m gutted, but being a believer in fate, I’m sort of just of the mindset ‘well everything happens for a reason - there must be a reason this didn’t happen for me’

The reason I believe is that my life has taken some big kilts off turn really to get me to where I am now, which is somewhere I’d never have planned but I’m absolutely so happy. I wanted to be a lawyer, no kids, live in another country. I planned my whole life for that an abusive relationship, and an unplanned pregnancy (not with my dickhead ex) and here I am - married to my best friend, a teacher with three gorgeous boys!

So - do you think fate pushed you along?

I don’t have regrets because everything I’ve been through brought me here and I’m currently very happy but I don’t believe things happen for a reason.

TheWordmeister · 05/04/2020 21:04

No - don't believe in fate. Completely daft concept to me, sorry.

Nothing is pre-determined but you can make the best of a bad situation.

thecatneuterer · 05/04/2020 21:09

I agree with the pp that fate is a completely daft concept. However it's great that you are happy OP. Life can turn on random events. It's mad (in my opinion) to believe in predetermination, but most of us can think of chance events that have in some way changed our lives. But they are, nonetheless, no more than chance events.

MrsSnitchnose · 05/04/2020 21:20

I think everything is predetermined, though naturally nothing is set in stone because we have free will. I believe in Karma and that where you are at any given time, is exactly where you are meant to be in life.

DonKeyshot · 05/04/2020 21:20

I can relate to that but, apart from the date of our death, I don't believe that our lives are 'fated' as such.

I do believe that we chose the circumstances into which we are born and, for want of a better term, the 'lessons' we need to learn in order to grow en route to becoming all that we can be.

That said, I believe we are born with free will and can choose any of the various paths that we encounter as we navigate our way through this particular life, even if our choice negates our life purpose.

You could take the view that you weren't meant to get that particular job, or that when one door closes another opens. If that is your belief I don't doubt that this will come to pass as there will inevitably be other opportunities and your mindset will serve to convince you that it was 'meant to be' and you are far better off than if you'd got the job you initially went for.

Yes things definitely happen for a, reason. I believe in fate

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 05/04/2020 21:59

Not fate per se but I do believe in trusting where the sea life takes you, you can fight against it but it will be bloody hard work. If you don’t like your destination you always have the choice of throwing yourself back in the sea and seeing where you end up next.

Nursejackie1 · 05/04/2020 22:45

I don’t. Because why should some people’s fate be horrific. People tend to say it’s fate when things turn out well. I don’t think things are meant to be at all. Why would some people be fated for good things and others for hell on earth?

Sparklesocks · 05/04/2020 22:50

I’d like to, but unfortunately I think it’s more likely that it’s a big sea of chaos - sometimes we get lucky and sometimes we don’t. However I do believe that multiple opportunities present themselves, just because you missed one doesn’t mean another won’t fly into your life at another time.

Also the type of circumstances you’re born into can play a major role in how your life turns out, for example if you’re born into a well off family with loving parents than you most likely have a better shot of being happy and getting lucky more often than someone born into a poverty/a broken home with fewer opportunities to pul themselves out.

boringbertha · 05/04/2020 22:56

Not so much a believer in fate but being careful what you wish for as it often doesn't manifest in the way your originally hoped. Also believe in life lessons, I know that mine is patience; and I'm still definitely learning!

MrsSnitchnose · 05/04/2020 23:10

@boringbertha I know that one very well. I have someone in my life and a situation that is teaching me patience in the most frustrating way. I really hope I learn the lesson properly this time, I do not want to do it again

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 05/04/2020 23:17

Pretty much this

Jessikka · 05/04/2020 23:21

When something doesnt go my way, I usually have a clarifying moment a few months later where I think "that's why that didnt work out - because this would have affected me" or something to that effect.

I believe things happen for a reason.

Cam2020 · 05/04/2020 23:32

No, but I do think some things are inevitable because of our circumstances, personalities etc.

I honestly don't think things happen for a reason, but I do think that people that live by that philosophy are probably more inclined to make a go of whatever life throws at them and are happier for it, and that's great for them.

I'm not religious either and I don't feel a need to believe in a purpose for me being here or a greater power, I'm quite happy just to be here enjoying my life and getting through the bits that aren't so great at times.

Pondskimmer · 05/04/2020 23:39

No, I agree with pps that it’s a daft concept primarily believed in by the credulous who are alarmed by the randomness of life. We had to pull out of a house purchase last month because of a legal problem only discovered late in the process, and hence when Coronavirus really got started, we had not just bought an expensive house that was now potentially worth far less than we’d paid. Some people would view that as fate, but it was pure coincidence.

Bunnybigears · 05/04/2020 23:41

I dont believe everything is pre determined in some grand master plan but I do believe some things are either meant to be or not meant to be and sometimes we just have to accept that.

MrFaceyRomford · 05/04/2020 23:45

No. It's up there with "the one" and "love at first sight" as things that are totally ridiculous.
