To think be worried people think I'm not shopping for essentials

feelinguseless101 · 05/04/2020 19:53

I know iabu BUT I had an Asda shop delivered yesterday, we were supposed to be having friends over this week so I booked it waaaaaay in advance. I didn't cancel it and did a really big shop with it instead, 10 day meal plan, house hold items etc. It came missing 10 items. They're mostly 'ingredients' needed to complete the meals in the meal plan and there's also laundry detergent and an Easter egg. We could possibly do without most of it but we've completely run out of washing powder so AIBU to think that when I do my shop tomorrow people are going to think I'm batshit and flouting the rules? My list is:

Laundry detergent
Limes
Easter egg
Cheese
Coriander
Onion
Mini marshmallows
Cumin
Baby toothbrush
Parsley

Just that having a shop for alcohol only would be pushing the boundaries on only going to the ship for essential items 🤷‍♀️

scarbados · 06/04/2020 11:54

When shopping for 'essentials' :-

1 - I decide what's essential for our household
2 - If the supermarket is selling it, and getting new stock delivered, and I want to buy it, I buy it. Whether it's flowers, magazines, chocolate or gin. It's there to be bought. I'm not going just to buy gin or chocolate so I'm not making extra trips.

Someone tried to tell me last week that fresh fruit and veg aren't essential and I should be buying canned. This is lockdown, not wartime rationing.

Rockbird · 06/04/2020 12:05

What the hell is the matter with everyone at the moment. My last shop, as well as the essentials, consisted of many Easter eggs. And my next one will consist of many biscuits. I can't imagine who else is going to see my shopping outside this household and I couldn't give a fuck even if people were (social distantly) lined up down the path to check! What's with people at the moment?

RibenaMonsoon · 06/04/2020 12:06

Wow that's insane! What were their reasonings behind that little gem? You've got to go out anyway to buy it so what does it matter?

I'm past caring what people think.
If you're shopping for what you would consider essential items, chuck whatever else you fancy in the trolley for god's sake.
Psychiatrists are going to have a field day when this is all over if we don't have a crutch or two while we are cooped up.

I don't need anything today but milk is low and so is bread and fresh fruit. So I'll need to go out tomorrow to grab some. If a bottle of sauvignon blanc and a bag of doughnuts end up in the basket as well then so be it.

DontRockTheB0at · 06/04/2020 12:11

You are way overthinking this. Not everybody shops weekly or every 2weeks for a big shop. Many people shop every other or every third day for many reasons. Nobody is interested in the contents of your shopping trolley. The fact that you are worrying about this data to me that you actively judge other people’s shopping.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/04/2020 12:21

The fact that you are worrying about this data to me that you actively judge other people’s shopping.

it says to me the OP is taking too much notice of the fun police on MN.

That's completely arse about face. ConfusedWe're living mostly on veg boxes at the moment. Quite a lot of local produce, less processing, very low packaging. We have some cans in store, we're saving those in case we can't get fresh.

wink1970 · 06/04/2020 12:31

I have just braved Tesco, where I bought a small but varied set of groceries.

Unlike a startling amount of people, I observed the one-way system and kept back until the person in front moved. The people who need shooting (metaphorically, of course :-)) are the ones who pushed past, and ignored safe space, and were clearly on their usual daily trip.... not those with Easter Eggs in their trolley.

BBCONEANDTWO · 06/04/2020 12:32

For fucks sake this is just getting ridiculous now. You can go and buy whatever you need and want OP.

As yet there is no law about what groceries are essential or not. And there bloody well better not be. It's insanity.

Can we all just stop policing each others food choices please!

I had to go to the chemist to get a prescription. It's in a large Sainsburys so grabbed milk, snacks and Easter eggs while there. I'm sure people would've judged me for my basket but we don't need to do another big shop for a while and the prescription was needed that day.

Some people do seem to be appointing themselves the 'essentials police'

dinosaurcookie · 06/04/2020 12:48

I need to get salad and veg later in the week...gonna ensure that I chuck lots of 'non essentials' in the basket too just to piss people off if this is really what the world has come to.. eating tinned peas and semolina to prove how virtuous to everyone else. Just keep your distance and don't handle all the produce in the supermarket...that's far worse imo.

gamerchick · 06/04/2020 12:50

Well, you could probably do without all of that until you next shop, so they may well think it. None of those (except maybe cheese) look like an essential ingredient

This properly made me laugh. Cheese over laundry detergent Grin

Oops. I bought alcohol and cat food yesterday. ConfusedBlush

GreenWheat · 06/04/2020 13:07

Who cares what other people think? Most of these folk have made up their own rules as to what everyone else should be doing and why anyone not adhering to their self-made rules is either stupid or selfish. You are allowed to buy anything that is in stock in shops that are open.

thenightsky · 06/04/2020 13:14

I've never studied the contents of other people's trolleys. I'm certainly not going to start now. What on earth is going on with these nosy buggers who are.

SwerfandTurf · 06/04/2020 13:23

Nobody is interested in the contents of your shopping trolley.

A brief browse of MN shows that some people are deeply, deeply interested in the contents of other people’s shopping trolleys.

DrivingMsCrazy · 06/04/2020 13:37

It's non essential trips, not non essential items we are supposed to be cutting down on. If you need laundry stuff (and how could anyone say this is not a household essential?!?!) you are better to get everything else in the same trip to reduce risk of further exposure on another trip!
People that don't/won't understand this are just stupid and should be ignored.
Give zero fucks as a PP said. People pleasing is highly over rated when many people are frankly just idiots.

TealWater · 06/04/2020 15:26

A toothbrush is basic hygiene and therefor essential, same as detergent.

So it really does not matter about the rest. As long as you need to go there for essentials, you are already there so if you buy ice cream, coke, chips, whatever is ok because you are already there. The rules are about limiting unnecessary TRIPS. Not unnecessary 'items'. If you have to go for food or something important, that's all the justification you need.

Nowhere are there rules about essential buying. People are getting seriously confused with non-essential trips, and extending the narrative to mean that there are rules on food and purchases. No, there are not. You can buy whatever the hell you like while you are out - as long as you have a valid reason to be out. There is no such rule about shopping for essentials. So don't worry about it, shop as you normally would.

Mia1415 · 06/04/2020 15:56

No one will be looking in your trolley. The checkout staff won't care. It's not like you are only popping in to buy some coriander.
