Insects in my clothes

locomoco19 · 05/04/2020 17:49

So it's really annoying! my garden does have a lot of flowers and grass area. Everytime I put clothes out to dry, there's tiny little insects all over it, even lady birds and some other beige colour tiny worm like thing. I've noticed they love light colour items. Is there anything I can do to prevent them coming on to the clothes, we won't be able to sort the garden out til next year now.

Lady birds are also coming in to the bedroom when I open the window!! I sprayed vinegar around the windows as I reAd they don't like tht smell.

Flies love the smell of vinegar

EC22 · 05/04/2020 18:07

You attract flies with vinegar!

MitziK · 05/04/2020 18:25

Use an eco friendly fabric softener. The scents in things like Lenor/Comfort are extremely attractive to insects, especially the floral ones - Ecover used to point this out on their packaging.

Slith · 05/04/2020 19:03

How about just shaking them before bringing them indoors?

locomoco19 · 06/04/2020 18:21

Yes I do shake them before getting them indoors, it's just annoying that I have to do that to each piece of clothing.

Funnily enough I've not had issues with flies around the area I sprayed vinegar!
I even clean my windows with vinegar and no fly issue there.

It's just insects on clothing when drying outdoors which is the issue.

Is there anything else that I can do to keep ladybirds away??

Insects are an important food source for birds. Learn to love them, and shake the laundry before you put it away.

Thesearmsofmine · 06/04/2020 18:55

We have the exact same thing, we have a small woodland behind our garden and loads of insects. We also get ladybirds in the house, I don’t mind until they start flapping about like crazy.

locomoco19 · 07/04/2020 01:37

Well google has given me a lot of answers as to how I can rid of those insects.

OP posts:
MitziK · 07/04/2020 10:59

So, do you use standard fabric softener/washing powder?

Making the clothes less appealing than their actual food sources seems to be fairly simple.

locomoco19 · 07/04/2020 19:23

I use non bio

MitziK · 07/04/2020 20:04

Switching to ecofriendly (like Ecover) will reduce the attraction for insects.

QuiQuaiQuod · 07/04/2020 20:26

I want to know how to keep the beasties away from the doors and windows. I have the hugest phobia, and somehow a wasp was in my room today! How thwe HELL can they got in thru the tiny vent thing on the window? I onlym have it open a millimetre! Any smells I can spray around the doors and windows? Please, I hate this time of year because of them.

PlanDeRaccordement · 07/04/2020 20:30

How about putting a screen in your windows?
www.streme.co.uk/screens-for-home

PPs have covered the clothing issue.

Kion · 07/04/2020 20:32

Do you have a tumble drier op?
I have the issue with insects and I always put my washing in the drier for 20 mins or so to give it a last bit of airing and get rid of any wee beasties.
Although I do realise it defeats the purpose of being eco! 🤷🏼‍♀️

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 07/04/2020 20:37

@QuiQuaiQuod i would suggest some type of screen too.

@locomoco19 just shake it. It's just bugs. I shake mine too. I would really welcome some ladybugs here!

QuiQuaiQuod · 07/04/2020 20:39

plan

I was just asking Dad about that. he had some in his old house. Thanks for link. as for the clothes, yes I shake everything too.

I keep sheets in the house, just hang them over the doors in house and its easier, so only clothes to shake!

That’s why if you’ve spent any time in the tropics, your iron is your friend.
Heat is essential to kill anything enmeshed into the fabric

Be thankful the larvae insects lay on your line-drying clothes in the UK don’t burrow into your skin.

Have a look at this info on myiasis if you dare!

QuiQuaiQuod · 07/04/2020 20:40

still wondering about smells thought. something like lemon? thought I heard that somewhere that beasties hate that smell. or citronella.

mrwalkensir · 07/04/2020 20:45

they look for stuff in the uv spectrum - is it mainly blues ? And maybe brighteners in your soap powder?
