To ask for any creative project ideas around maths for Year 4 kids?

I'm running some creative sessions for my DS and his friends online...maths isn't my forte. They're all doing the curriculum based maths learning, but I wanted to do something more creative.

I have zilch ideas. Any thoughts? Many thanks

What topic?

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 05/04/2020 17:07

Creative how?
There are fab art things to do with pi or do you mean more using a sweet as a standard unit of measurement & doing area/perimeter?

noeyedeer · 05/04/2020 17:08

www.primaryresources.co.uk/maths/mathsD3.htm

There's a Theme Park maths challenge here that can be done any number of ways.

Also, if they're pretty good at maths, the murder mysteries are fab.

PurpleDaisies · 05/04/2020 17:08

I’m a bit confused why you’re doing this and not school. What’s your role here? Are they paying you?

noeyedeer · 05/04/2020 17:10

@PurpleDaisies quite a lot of schools have only sent home bog standard worksheets. OP might just be being kind and trying to do something engaging for her son and his friends?

Thelowquietsea · 05/04/2020 17:10

Thanks so much for the link @noeyedeer

@gibbonsgibbonsgibbons - I hadn't even thought that much about it. Using every day stuff to encourage maths thinking would be good, but so would Pi.

@PurpleDaisies - not sure any of your questions are relevant?

OP posts:
Thelowquietsea · 05/04/2020 17:11

Yes, thank you @noeyedeer - this, exactly. I'm a creative using the time to put some creativity back into their learning. Not that I should have to explain myself Confused

It’s a bit odd that someone’s mum is running classes for their children’s friends. I was wondering about how that came about.

Thelowquietsea · 05/04/2020 17:13

@noeyedeer - that's a fantastic resource! Thank you so much. They are all pretty sharp - the murder mystery looks superb. x

It could be a home education group where I believe it's common for adults to teach a group the subject that they are most confident in?

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 05/04/2020 17:13

Twinkl is free atm and has various maths investigations and activities.

Thelowquietsea · 05/04/2020 17:14

It's not odd and it's irritating that it concerns you enough to keep posting about it.

OP posts:
Thelowquietsea · 05/04/2020 17:15

I like Twinkl but i wouldn't say it's particularly creative

noeyedeer · 05/04/2020 17:17

@Thelowquietsea you're welcome! I've used them with year 5 and 6 in the past. It's worth a look around that site, all submitted by teachers. Another maths site that has some good investigations is NRich, but I'm not sure how much is free anymore.

Good luck :-)

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 05/04/2020 17:19

Depending on the particular topic you could make your own for example build something of a certain perimeter or volume or area out of lolly sticks or lego, predict how many they would need, build it and see if they were right.
Equivalent fractions with lego or playdoh or whatever you can cut.
Time do a task and time it and then order from smallest to largest, what is the difference between the fastest and third fastest, how long did they spend altogether, if they all start at 9 am for example (but their watches are 3,5,10 minutes) fast/slow what time did the actually finish at. Etc

If you said which topics you're trying to cover , I'm sure we can come up with ideas.

Thelowquietsea · 05/04/2020 17:21

@PrincessConsuelaBananaHammock

Great ideas! Thank you. I shall give the topic more thought and come up. Thank you. x

I'm teaching some year 4s online at the moment. I do a daily maths lesson but for some fun things Nrich has lots of investigations, Twinkl have some good. Challenges like murder mysteries etc, they have some escape room challenges too. Also look at outdoor maths. There are some really nice simple ideas. There are some good fun websites too like. Hit the button

Soontobe60 · 05/04/2020 20:48

Purple Mash from 2Simple is also free ATM. They tend to be more creative than Twinkl.

Bearnecessity · 05/04/2020 21:19

Make factor bugs out of coloured card with straws etc for legs.Give the bug a number on its body e.g. 20 Then work out what makes that number eg 4x5 2x10 1x20 Mark the legs on left with its counterpart on the right. Talk about how many legggedbugs for different numbers you can make. Discuss ordering the factors 1,2,5,10,20 etc Look at 12,15,18,24,32,36, moving to 50,100 etc Challenge with higher double digits

WombatStewForTea · 05/04/2020 21:23

Area and perimeter? You can get them to design a house and decorate it with different paint/wallpaper and floorings giving a price per square metre and stick within a budget?

Zoeyclash · 05/04/2020 21:23

@Thelowquietsea
I know you mentioned that you're not too keen on Twinkl but if you look up Maths Mystery there are aome really great puzzles that should fit what you're looking for.

Thelowquietsea · 05/04/2020 21:26

Ooh, thanks all. That's great. Some great ideas. I do like Twinkl but I didn't think it would help with this.

www.schoolsobservatory.org/discover/stem-clubs/play-doh-planets

Playdoh planets
It's a science topic really but could be linked to maths in a few ways - fractions, scale, measuring

norbert23 · 05/04/2020 21:37

Battleships to practise coordinates is easy and fun!
Making "potions" with water & food colouring to set amounts is a nice way to get to grips with measures, you could convert from ml to l etc. N rich has a really nice puzzle with shapes to represent each number and you have to work out which is which x

Smellbellina · 05/04/2020 21:40

Look up the pirate game
