Is it reasonable to walk 2.2 miles to the supermarket

When I have a small shop very close?

The nearest supermarket (Tesco) is 2.2 miles away, and the next nearest one (Lidl) is 3.5 miles away.

The nearby shop is expensive and has a limited range of products.

I haven't been to the supermarket since lockdown, but I am running out of things that I have in as standard and the local shop doesn't sell. But there is no guarantee that the supermarket would have them in stock either (although they do stock them as standard, but my list includes things like yeast and wholemeal bread flour which are hard to get just now).

I would treat it as my daily exercise too, if I was to go.

So mumsnet jury, should I stay or should I go?

Yabu - don't go to the supermarket
Yanbu - a walk to the supermarket every couple of weeks would be okay

There is no flour to be had anywhere. I wouldn't be walking that far to a shop if you can avoid it.

Wattagoose90 · 05/04/2020 12:30

Go, but be conscious that it'll feel like a much longer walk back with heavy bags!

dementedpixie · 05/04/2020 12:31

If you dont drive then walking to the supermarket is perfectly acceptable. My sister has to do this for her shopping. She takes a rucksack as that makes it easier to carry her shopping home

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 05/04/2020 12:32

That is fine as long as it is your daily exercise too. Some people have no choice but to walk that far for their shopping due to having no transport.

HyperactivePineapple · 05/04/2020 12:32

I don't have a car, so I regularly walk back from the supermarket - I have a backpack for the heavy stuff.

Sounds ok but how much are you going to be able to carry back? Bring a trolley. And flour and pasta were the only two things the super Tesco near me were out of.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/04/2020 12:32

YANBU.

I live near a small Tesco Express, it's expensive and limited items, and as I'm a single parent currently on furlough every penny counts at the moment. I walk a mile and a half to Asda or Aldi when I want to do my shopping (don't have a car). I count it as my daily exercise.

SauvignonBlanche · 05/04/2020 12:33

Be prepared for disappointment, you never know what they’re going to sold out of next.

BemidjiMinnesota · 05/04/2020 12:34

Go but if you're walking back make sure you use a basket to shop. If you use a trolley you wont realise how heavy your shopping is until you're halfway home and your arms are falling off. Or bring a wheeled suitcase/ shopping trolley to bring your shopping back.

Tulipstulips · 05/04/2020 12:37

Do you live rurally? Several places near us deliver veg boxes from local farms and also have flour and pasta etc in stock.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/04/2020 12:37

Oh and both shops had flour the last time I was there, so it is available in some shops. Aldi seems to be particularly well stocked, they had everything including eggs, pasta and loo roll.

HyperactivePineapple · 05/04/2020 12:40

Tulipstulips I have looked at every one I can find and none seem to supply flour and yeast, unfortunately.

I guess where I am would be suburban, although the neighbours that have lived here all their lives would say it was most definitely rural Grin (we get closer to the city every year)

I'm surprised and pleased to see that most people think its OK. I was very prepared to be slated for even thinking of going that far with a shop close by.

Polish shops

I bought flour in Tesco yesterday afternoon

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 05/04/2020 12:44

Or generally eastern european shops. They have good stocks. I got milk and everything there while no supermarket had it.

Fine if you can afford to pay premium prices, some people can't.

Lynda07 · 05/04/2020 12:45

You're allowed to go to the supermarket and if your nearest is over two miles away, I don't see why you wouldn't be allowed to go there, especially if you have a shopping trolley and enjoy walking. Or you could get a cab one way or both, cabs are still operating and are glad of the business. Maybe you could order from the supermarket in advance of collecting so you would know what you're getting.

This might be of interest to you for yeast and wholemeal bread flour:

BarbaraofSeville · 05/04/2020 12:45

Of course it's fine, there's no rule about you only using your nearest shop, so ax long as you're prepared for a wasted journey if there are things they don't have and are capable of getting the shopping home, go to whichever shop you want to.

HyperactivePineapple · 05/04/2020 12:51

@Lynda07 thanks for that! No delivery slots at the moment, but definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Phone them and ask if they have what you need first?

InDubiousBattle · 05/04/2020 12:56

We're in a similar situation, we have a village shop close by and a small town with a Lidl, Aldi, Co op, tesco metro and a home bargains about 2 miles away. We've been walking into town every few days. It's a pain in the arse carrying everything 2 miles up hill home but we're a family of 4 and, whilst the local shop is pretty good it doesn't have everything we need and I'm conscious of not emptying the shelves as some people in the village might not be able to get into town at all.

JinglingHellsBells · 05/04/2020 13:00

I don't understand your dilemma @HyperactivePineapple.

The guidance is we are allowed out to shop for food. It doesn't matter how far away it is.

I have a tiny corner shop and the closest supermarket is 5 miles away. I will drive.

So far I have managed to get online deliveries but they may not always be available.

Is this an option for you? You haven't mentioned online shopping (unless I missed it.)

mindproject · 05/04/2020 13:00

Sounds fine to me.
