To think the mini pill isnt going to work for me either.

I was put on the mini pill desogestral a month ago for heavy periods. For 19 days it worked. No side effects. It appeared to have stopped my period. 4 days after my period was due I began spotting. I was still happy and thought this was much better than heavy periods. But after 5 days of spotting the bleeding began. It's still a light-medium flow 11 days later (16 days after spotting began)

I rang my surgery Friday. He was a locum Dr with poor English. He asked me what I wanted to do. I asked him what he thought I should do? . He said he didn't know. He couldn't give me anything to stop the bleeding and I can't take the combination. So he said see how I go and ring back in 2 weeks if I'm no better.

Anyhow I feel sickly and weak. I take iron and vitamin b everyday. I'm eating well. I'm drinking plenty of vitamin c.

Has anyone got any experiences of this pill. It was supposed to improve my health but it's making it worse so far.

I have put it in here to get people to see my post. I really need to know how the pill worked for people to see if it's time to stop taking it. I would rather bleed heavy for 7 days than bleed for over 2 weeks. Thanks all!

Find out if there's a family planning clinic near you and make an appointment (it might be over the phone in the current situation). They will have a better knowledge of the different kinds of pills and other options than your GP, who doesn't seem to know much about it.

dementedpixie · 04/04/2020 19:17

It can take time to settle down. I would persevere for a few months just to see if things improve

Ghostlyglow · 04/04/2020 19:17

Stick with it a bit longer. It took about 6 months for my body to settle down on it but then it was great - no periods.

BrooHaHa · 04/04/2020 19:17

Did you start taking it on the first day of your period? That's the best time as it prevents the womb lining build up. You can start at other times but you'll get more breakthrough bleeding.

I was on it for ages. Didn't have a period at all for about a decade.

dementedpixie · 04/04/2020 19:18

I was on it for several years with no periods

fairyfingers · 04/04/2020 19:19

I had similar and it tailed off after about 3 weeks and nothing at all since so may be worth sticking it out a bit more

Cherrysoup · 04/04/2020 19:22

Honestly, give it a chance. I was put on the mini pill 6 weeks ago, having had the Mirena removed. On that, probably because it was past it’s best by date, I was constantly spotting. I’ve had nothing now for two weeks, sheer bliss. Mine’s the desosec (sp). My only worry is getting more, I was only given 3 month’s worth.

InescapableDeath · 04/04/2020 19:23

I had breakthrough bleeds for about six months and then hardly anything since

MrMeeseekscando · 04/04/2020 19:26

I bled for about a year before I gave up. Doesn't suit everyone

Marieo · 04/04/2020 19:26

The mini pill took 3-ish months to settle for me, it's amazing now but I kept thinking about changing. It might not be the same for you, and sorry you're going through that, but if you can face it might be worth keeping with it just for a bit and see?

Groovee · 04/04/2020 19:28

I took it for 8 months. It was going to the miracle I needed according to the gynaecologist. It was hell. Bled daily until I stopped taking it and had surgery.

Londongirl88888 · 04/04/2020 19:30

Thanks ladies. I have two months left so I'll keep going. I just don't want to get poorly if it's not going to settle.

I started it half way through as I was desperate to improve my health. I bet that's why this has happened? Will my lining build up again or does it build up alot less?

My sister has never bled on it in a year so I thought perhaps it wasn't working for me.

I also had constant bleeding on mini pill.. switched to combined pill and it's much better, but not perfect. I asked for a stronger one but they want me to try 3 months of iron first, 400mg daily.

If you take it perfectly it's supposed to prevent the build up but because you've just started it it will have taken a while to have that effect IYSWIM? I've started it first day and mid-cycle (when I've run out of pills for a week and had to restart) and I have found more breakthrough bleeding with mid-cycle starts, though it doesn't carry on forever. It was never significant bleeding for me, though I didn't suffer with heavy periods before. I'd persevere, but if you ever need to restart it I would suggest starting it from day 1.

MsMD · 04/04/2020 19:35

Doctors in the UK do not have poor English. I'm in the US and when I went to work for a short time in the NHS I had to prove I could speak English well.

Do you mean he had an accent? Not sure why it's in any way relevant but sure.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 04/04/2020 19:42

It says on Cerazette's leaflet to take on first day of the period. Exactly for the reasons pp mentioned. Stick with it for a bit now. It should calm down

Londongirl88888 · 04/04/2020 19:44

Thanks everyone you've helped me feel more confident to carry it on.

His language was poor. He was skipping words out and was asking me stuff I had already told him. It was like he hadn't heard me when I was telling him the problem. I told him for example I can't take the combination pill. He said uh huh uh huh ok then two mins later he said we could try a combination pill. So I reminded him I can't take them. He said yes yes yes ok ok. Not very confident in himself I felt.

The mini pill stopped my periods but so did the arm implant. I cant really remember what my normal periods are like so cant tell you if that's relevant, I've been on contraception since 18. I had the copper coil and those periods made me want to to rip my uterus out.
Out of mini-pill, arm implant and copper coil. Mini-pill is my favourite. I had severe mental health issues on arm implant, paranoia and anxiety that really really impacted my life. And the copper coil is awful going in, awful coming out, and moved putting me in agony for months before it came out.
Stick with it for a little longer, make sure you take it perfectly on time every day. Currently spotting for the first time in about a year because I've been very slack with it.

DinoGreen · 04/04/2020 20:07

I’m not on this one but a different brand of mini pill (Cerazette). 2 months in and I’m having a lot of bleeding and spotting still. After spotting all last week, heavier bleeding today and it’s only 2 weeks since the start of my last period. It’s seriously frustrating but I’m going to give it another month in the hope it settles down. I was on it for a few years before I had my DS (five years ago) and I do remember it was the same then when I first started it, but then my periods slowed and spaced out (coming every 2/3 months instead of every month) and then eventually stopped completely - hooray! Hoping for the same again ...

dementedpixie · 04/04/2020 20:31

Desogestrel is the hormone in cerazette/cerelle so they are essentially the same mini pill

ShadowLightning · 04/04/2020 20:35

I’m actually having a similar experience. I started taking Desogestrel about 2 months ago. A bit of spotting but nothing for 5 weeks. Then I had a ‘normal period’ 2 weeks ago. I’ve now had heavy bleeding for the past 6 days.

But I’m going to preserve for a bit longer and see if it gets better over the next month or two before I give up with it.

Londongirl88888 · 04/04/2020 20:44

@shadowLightning

I hope it improves for you. So frustrating isn't it.

@DinoGreen I think I will finish this strip and see how I am (26 days left ) I hope if I stick with it it will get better too.

Sorry OP you lost me with the casual racism.

Aside from that what the fuck are you doing wasting the time of any medical professional at this current time of crisis fussing about your mini-pill prescription??

Fatted · 04/04/2020 21:06

You need to give it time OP. It can take up to six months for your hormone levels to settle on the pill. Any kind of pill. Your body is not a machine. You can't just flick a switch and make it work.

I had to stop my periods for a while because my iron levels were so low. When I went to the GP about it, they recommended the injection as the best one to stop periods. I took it for six months and didn't bleed for a total of ten months.

dementedpixie · 04/04/2020 21:08

Injection made me bleed. Mirena coil stopped them as did cerazette (desogestrel)
