that the sight of my 15yo dancing to 'Can't Touch This' has filled me with deep joy?

disclaimer - I have a fever, so may well be rambling

DH is making lunch in the kitchen and sent DS2 to ask DS1 and I if we want a cup of tea. DS2's way of doing this was to dance into the room with "Can't Touch This" blaring out on his phone and mime the request at me, complete with what DS2 thinks are gangland hand signals Grin

It's made me tearful in a happy way. When I was a kid, I was so beaten down and self-conscious after years of belittling, I would rather have died than dance in front of my mother. I didn't share humour with her like that. I didn't dance at all, I was convinced I was ugly and useless. I wasn't allowed music on either, I would have been roared at to turn that shit off.

Lockdown sucks, and I'm worried for my kids' education and their health, and I feel ill myself so that's tinged with fear as well. But that little snapshot of my gorgeous, happy, confident, hilarious boy has made me feel so much better.

Apologies for the self-indulgent twaddle. Please share your moments of positivity with me as well!

Awww I think its fab when teenagers can act a bit daft and not be embarrassed about it.

Chillyourbeans · 04/04/2020 14:54

Your boy has made smile. Hope you feel better very soonFlowers

RonnieBarkingMad · 04/04/2020 14:57

Self-indulgent twaddle away OP, that put a smile on my face at least reading that Smile

Are you still in contact with your mother (if she is still alive)? Is she a better grandmother to your children than what she was a mother to you?

Elephantonascooter · 04/04/2020 15:00

This made me smile! It reminded me of the moment my toddler picked up a rattle and started singing into it like a microphone a very clear remdition of "I believe in a thing called love" by the darkness. He's only 18 months and doesn't talk yet but singing he's got down. As a keen singer myself, that was my proudest moment so far!

ThisIsM · 04/04/2020 15:05

That is truly wonderful, I know exactly what you mean because that confidence is such a big thing Ive wanted for my children too. I'm so sorry your mother was shit in that way 💐 Sounds like you have done an amazing job with your sons in spite of her.
It put a smile on my face too.

SeamusFinnigan · 04/04/2020 15:07

Aww that's lovely OP, made my day!

Babymamaroon · 04/04/2020 15:11

This has really warmed my cockles Smile

redcarbluecar · 04/04/2020 15:13

That’s lovely 😊 Get well soon.

StudentHelp · 04/04/2020 15:15

Aww that’s lush!
Know the feeling that you describe as I’m only 21 so remember it well (and still feel very self conscious and down at times)

Hope you feel better soon

PurpleSproutingSomething · 04/04/2020 15:16

I want my boy to always be like this. I would have been laughed at as a teen and told I was too much.

I want my kid to take up as much space as he wants in our home.

This is one of my favourite threads today

BoswellsBollocks · 04/04/2020 15:19

Aw, as a parent of a non self-conscious 14yo DS that made me tear up. Your boy sounds ace!

I totally get what you mean, I was so self conscious as a kid but seeing my youngest with his ‘no fucks will be given’ attitude to life it makes me smile.

Hooray for all our lovely, fun kids!

DariaMorgendorffer · 04/04/2020 15:20

This has made me smile op.

Sounds like your dcs have a really happy home Smile

Dontunderestimateme · 04/04/2020 15:21

I know exactly what you mean. My DS seems to be dealing with all this OK at the moment, and just seeing him giggling while playing with our cat makes everything seem a bi better.

bellinisurge · 04/04/2020 15:25

Tell him that on an obscure country road in the North East of England, a STOP sign has been defaced by someone writing underneath "Hammer Time!". I spotted it on holiday.

He's fabulous.

RickJames · 04/04/2020 15:27

That's beautiful OP. I love seeing kids let loose! When my step-daughter (15) and her friend sing the Spice Girls songs, I get a similar feeling.

My DS has started watching Fresh Prince of Belair on Netflix. DH and I are rediscovering the joy. It really takes me back to that era. I was in a really unhappy family life and Uncle Phil and Aunt Viv and all the schlocky moral lessons really got me through life as a young teen Grin I love all my sons opinions on the storylines.

Wynston · 04/04/2020 15:29

I can picture the scene.......this op has put a smile on my face x

Womenwotlunch · 04/04/2020 16:28

Thread of the day Op
Definitely know what you mean.
Just lovely

Booksandwine80 · 04/04/2020 21:31

I love this. My 3 year old DD was dancing to “itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini” the other day. Complete with over exaggerated “aah yeeaahs” Grin

Yabadee · 04/04/2020 22:05

One of my mums favourite memories is walking on my younger brother and sister and i doing the dance from the lynx advert at the time (I like to party, everybody does)

I can barely remember it now but she loves reminding us of it. A rare moment of us getting along back in the day!

BillywilliamV · 04/04/2020 22:07

The song must be having a moment, my 16yo was dancing to it last night,!

Crackerofdoom · 04/04/2020 22:10

Great song choice OP!
I am going to introduce my kids to it tomorrow Grin

mumoftwoplus1 · 04/04/2020 22:27

Aww I love this. My DC are the complete
Opposite to how I was as a child.
I was insecure, painfully shy, felt stupid because I was always being told I was stupid etc etc (I could go on forever about how shot my childhood was Sad) I was terrified of both my parents, and although my childhood could've been a lot worse, a lot of it was pretty hellish. My DC are so confident, sooooo happy, have so much zest for life and I just look at them everyday and feel overwhelmed and overjoyed by them.
It's the childhood I wish I had and I'm so glad they feel able to be who they are Smileso yes I know what you mean op Grinyay for our kids

helgahelga · 04/04/2020 22:28

@sadpapercourtesan I wish you could have filmed it so we could see!

Sounds fab! Grin

There is nothing that cannot be improved by either The Hoff or MC Hammer.
We love the latter so much in my house that I bought a Next cactus just for the Can't Touch This pot it came in also bought an I will survive cactus...it didn't

Silliness in this house came from DS (6) discovering Bongo Cat which is cats miaowing current hits (reminded me of miaow mix ads). So he came in beaming ear to ear to serenade me with...

AllTheseThingsThatIHaveNotDone · 04/04/2020 22:38
This led to Mr Chicken of course...which led me to reminding them that the muppet chickens did such things first
