To use a carton of chickpeas with a vest before date of Feb 2020

... to make a curry to feed a family of 4 tonight?

So it’s chickpeas in some sort of liquid in a carton, BBE Feb 2020 (not dry chickpeas). Guessing as it’s bbe rather than use by, it’ll be ok right? This is due to lockdown by the way. But don’t want to poison my kiddies! Thank you

Best before dates are exactly that. Best before. They'll be fine. It's only 4 weeks! They'll have been pasteurised/preserved. Enjoy!

DramaAlpaca · 04/04/2020 14:34

It'll be fine.

Heismyopendoor · 04/04/2020 14:34

It will be fine :)

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 04/04/2020 14:34

Eat them

StealthPolarBear · 04/04/2020 14:35

unopened? Yes without hesitation

CuckooCuckooClock · 04/04/2020 14:35

Share your chickpea recipe please

AmelieTaylor · 04/04/2020 14:36

Yes, they’ll be absolutely fine!

You can get creative & make fake meringue with the liquid!

GreyishDays · 04/04/2020 14:36

A carton? I’ve never seen them in a carton. Tin would be fine.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 04/04/2020 14:36

Anyone who tells you to bin them should be put to death and barbecued, and served up alongside the chickpeas.

Macncheeseballs · 04/04/2020 14:36

Yes I love chickpeas

Merename · 04/04/2020 14:37

I’m still giggling at myself trying to work out what the vest on a carton of chickpeas could be Grin

brassbrass · 04/04/2020 14:38

They'll be absolutely fine.

missmouse101 · 04/04/2020 14:39

Carry on OP, they are fine.

LaurieMarlow · 04/04/2020 14:41

Of course OP. They’d probably be fine in 2030.

Ouchy · 04/04/2020 14:41

Great thank you! Seems fairly unanimous. Sorry about the vest typo - Brought to mind sentient cartons and tins of goods displaying their individuality through carefully chosen attire! 🥴 I’ve been in social isolation too long....

Recipe is kale and chickpea curry. Basically just kale and chickpea sautéd in butter with onions and curry powder! Will see how it goes

We had kale and chickpea curry last night, with some black beans thrown in to use them up. 'Twas delicious.

safariboot · 04/04/2020 14:43

The best before date on these things is usual several years after they were made. A month later makes little difference. Trust your eyes and nose - open them and if they seem fine cook with them, if they seem off throw them away.

BarkandCheese · 04/04/2020 14:45

They’ll be fine. I just put tomato purée in a stew which was best before August 2019.

Lillyhatesjaz · 04/04/2020 16:51

I found a packet of rich tea dated November 2019 in the back of the cupboard last week, they were still ok.

Oblomov20 · 04/04/2020 16:54

Eh? Of course they'll be fine!

BoswellsBollocks · 04/04/2020 16:58

It’ll be grand. I’m going to be using an old packet of flour I found in the back of the cupboard that’s BBE Feb 20.

StealthPolarBear · 04/04/2020 17:03

Carton is like a tetrapak I imagine. You get some 'tinned' beans like that, and oassata.

Whoareyoudududu · 04/04/2020 17:04

They’ll be absolutely fine. Most tinned stuff is still edible even years after it’s best before date.

GregoryGrainog · 04/04/2020 19:06

Best before, grand after Grin
