Make up lesson

Firstly this is not a CV thread - I'm not talking about doing this now or in these circumstances, I am staying home, this is just hypothetical or maybe for the future.

I have a friend who is very into makeup, she pays for semi permanent lashes, sometimes pays for a MUA to do her face for a night out, brows, glittery eyelids, the works. I've seen those makeup lessons that department stores and make up brands do - I think MAC do them - where they teach you tips and techniques, and I think you get free samples etc.

I thought this might be a good idea for a birthday/Christmas present for my friend, but my other friend says it's insulting, like I'm insinuating she needs a lesson because she's not good enough at makeup! For the record that's not what I think, I just thought she might appreciate it.

What do you think?

YANBU - it's fine, I wouldn't be insulted
YABU - yeah I'd be insulted, pick something else

I think it's a lovely present. I'm very into make up, and I'd love it. It's good sometimes to get a new perspective and for advice on colours and product.

I agree with your friend (sorry!) I’m a MUA and I personally feel getting lessons are personal preference to the client.

The fact that she gets her make up professionally applied seems to know her products (?) then I feel she would probably know the basics anyway. Plus there are hundreds of Youtube make up tutorials now which are easily accessible (and free!)

Lastly with the current climate/Covid 19 and such uncertainty.. it would be a pretty pointless present as we are socially distancing and make up lessons aren’t high on priority lists

plunkplunkfizz · 04/04/2020 13:35

Unless she has told you she wants a lesson, steer well clear.

SecretsInSpitalfield · 04/04/2020 13:36

Sorry I just read my reply and I sound a bit rude! Please don’t take it that way!

Your intentions are lovely. Maybe a Space NK gift voucher to shop online? Or a luxury candle 🕯 would be a good choice...

Floraflower3 · 04/04/2020 13:39

If i were your friend I'd love it. Especially because at Mac for example, the cost of the lesson is fully redeemable on product.

Escrima · 04/04/2020 15:15

@SecretsInSpitalfield No it's fine, I wanted opinions! She doesn't really know her brands as such, she tends to buy cheap products but then splash out occasionally on MUAs and semi permanent stuff.

@Floraflower3 Ooh I didn't know that.

Ok thanks all! The vote is kind of split although more YABU... I might ask stealth questions and see if I can find out if she'd be interested. Or just leave it 🤣

I liked this at 18, as a gift from my mum before my school leavers ball.

Now I'd be really insulted, sorry!

bridgetreilly · 04/04/2020 17:11

I like the idea of the one that's basically a voucher for the product, but with a bonus make up session to try things out. Maybe don't say you've got her a lesson, just a 'make up experience' including some money to spend on make up?

London91 · 04/04/2020 17:18

If you get her a voucher, she can always choose to put it towards a lesson if that's what she wants. I'd personally love that as a gift.

Grumpos · 04/04/2020 17:21

I think it’s a nice present personally, if you get vouchers for somewhere like MAC then they discount it against the purchase of products so she would effectively get one or two bits for the cost (if I remember rightly it’s about 40/50£ for a full face at MAC). So essentially you’re actually buying her some make up and she gets shown some tricks of the trade along side it.

Even professionals go to master classes - I love make up and am fairly decent at application and technique but I’ve been to masterclasses and would enjoy a personal experience too.

Stuckfornow · 04/04/2020 17:22

Mac are really good for this, perhaps just a voucher and all the booking info, then she can get her makeup done for a night out and as a pp says you get the whole cost of the session to redeem against products. (Lashes aren’t included so they would take up some of that credit, think they were about £12 last time I went)
