To think a 9 year old shouldn't watch RuPaul's drag race?!

I'm a key worker, and my eldest daughter who's 21 is looking after my youngest, 9, during the day, encouraging her to do online learning etc. My eldest revealed to me today that she gets my youngest to do her work by bribing her with episodes of RuPauls drag race, and that this week they got through an entire season, and half way through another. I've watched 1 episode of that show, and it's definitely not age appropriate. Now I've got a 9 year old singing songs about 'Russian whores' and 'taking it up the ass'.
Eldest is adamant that it's not that bad, and that it's encouraging her to be herself and be more creative.

My youngest's school class WhatsApp
group chat are all saying that their kids are making art and craft, drawing rainbows, and making cupcakes, while my daughter keeps telling me that her waist is snatched and keeps 'death dropping' around the house.

Aibu to delete and unsubscribe to Netflix as I don't think I can put up with a 9 year old wannabe drag queen slut dropping every time she walks into a room for however long this lockdown carries on for. Would it be bad of me to chuck out a 21 year old during times like this, she's created this monster??!! I need wine

Katya is the only high class Russian whore!

Hate to break it to you but those references are from way more than a season and a half. I can't advise though because I watch it with my 2 year old Grin

I know it’s not supposed to be funny but that made me proper LOL. No it’s not an age appropriate for a 9 year old to watch.

ADreamOfGood · 03/04/2020 23:17

Is it not about drag racing then?

paralle · 03/04/2020 23:20

No need to delete Netflix. Just turn on parent control for Netflix, allow them to watch age related stuff only.

I was so anti until I was forced to watch it one evening. I am now a complete fan.. it's NOTHING to do with the whole transgender debate (my reason for being so anti , I don't see men who dress a woman as women just because they say so) HOWEVER .. Drag race is pure vaudeville / cabaret .. very very funny but VERY naughty.

The only thing I would say is that the average 9 yr old would not have a clue.. would just find it funny. . and if they did, you have more problems than TV. ..

My 10yo LOVES drag race and doesn't seem to have done her any harm

MorganKitten · 04/04/2020 01:13

I know most of the girls on the show, one is a very close friend of mine. But slut dropping and death drops are very different things.

TakeMeOn · 04/04/2020 01:16

I thought the contestants were all men?

I've only seen snippets, but really don't think this is appropriate for a 9 year old, especially if she's saying the things in your op!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/04/2020 01:19

I thought the contestants were all men?

They are. Not a single "girl" in sight. But of course men will affect these descriptions for a variety of reasons.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 04/04/2020 09:59

Meh , I have run out of kid stuff to watch with my 9 year old so watching 15s now

I wouldn’t worry , she is safe and laughing with her big sister surely

vanillandhoney · 04/04/2020 10:17

YANBU - she's far too young and the fact that your eldest thinks it's appropriate is pretty grim.

Parental controls on Netflix from now on.

CheriLittlebottom · 04/04/2020 10:23

I don't think anyone should watch it, to be fair. A show about people dressing up as exaggerated versions of any other protected characteristic would be condemned. Disabled drag? Bring back the black and white minstrel show? But women don't matter so let's caricature them for a laugh.

I would go mad at my 21yo for letting a 9yo watch that. Exposing a child to sexual content is a form of grooming, it lowers their boundaries and is, rightly, a safeguarding concern.

tiredanddangerous · 04/04/2020 10:26

9 is too young. I wouldn’t be impressed at all.

LizzieSiddal · 04/04/2020 10:27

I know most of the girls on the show

They’re ALL men not “girls”.

Girls are prepubescent women, people need to stop using that language to describe grown men.

Icantstandpip · 04/04/2020 10:38

Thank you for your making me laugh out loud with your post! I hope that was your intention! No idea if you're being unreasonable...or she is...or whatever (grin)

FamilyOfAliens · 04/04/2020 10:47

Leaving aside the fact that some people find a show parodying women entertaining while others don’t, what’s a shame is that there are so many things your DD could be doing instead.

Earlier in the week, for example, Chester Zoo were live-streaming tours of the zoo, there’s fitness and yoga for kids, masses of ideas on the Scouting website for indoor activities. The fact they watched an entire season and started another in one day suggests they are spending way too much time in front of the TV. No wonder she’s absorbed so much of the language from the show.

I guess this is what happens when you put a 21-year-old in charge of home-educating a 9-year-old (not saying you have a choice if there are no other adults in the house, btw).

Roweeeeena · 04/04/2020 10:49

I know most of the girls on the show Grin no you don't!
Firstly they're not girls, secondly that would be over 150 men from a variety of US States that you allegedly know. Give over.

RonnieBarkingMad · 04/04/2020 12:18

They could be talking about the UK version though? which has had one series (I think) and would make more sense to knowing some of the participants

jadey0891 · 04/04/2020 15:23

I don't think it's appropriate at all. Don't agree with it
