To think that football players should be furloughed.

They can’t ‘work’ so should be furloughed like everyone else, on 80% of their salary or £2500, whichever is greater.

Not be asked to take a 30% pay cut.

@Doobigetta, I disagree. Both G Neville and G Lineker were responding to Matt Hancock criticising clubs for taking a week or two to get this sorted when he as health secretary is monumentally cocking up the testing of nhs staff despite having weeks to get it in place. They were both saying that clubs must sort this out but were calling MH out for trying to shift the headline focus from ‘testing cock up’ onto ‘heartless millionaires’.

Don’t get me wrong, I agree that clubs must sort this out as it’s a disgraceful situation but MH is in no position to complain that anything like this takes time.

They should work as porters in the new nightingale hospitals. All that walking would keep them fit.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 03/04/2020 19:23

I work as matchday staff on a zero hours contract. Technically we qualify for furlough pay, but we are being ignored. It is frustrating that clubs are not recognising that they need all the elements of their staffing structure for success and not just the players. Mine is a second job and more of a hobby, I don't do it for the money, but I have colleagues who rely on the few pounds they get.

glassseagulls · 03/04/2020 19:23

The players should have been furloughed ages ago. As for a 30%, a 70% cut which is permanent would be better.

TildaKauskumholm · 03/04/2020 19:34

Grabbing bastards, expecting the taxpayer to pay their clubs' staff. I expect all the thicko fans will neither care nor remember this though.

Peapod29 · 03/04/2020 19:34

If the footballers continue with high salaries they will at least pay high tax so we do benefit.

Well, you’d hope so. Unfortunately most don’t pay what they should.

bogoffmda · 03/04/2020 19:54

Am more pissed off with the banks

everyone single one of them was bailed out by the tax payer to the tune of billions.

It is now time for them to pay that back with no loans to anyone and just front the cash.

Rowgtfc72 · 03/04/2020 21:14

My local second division side has furloughed its playing staff today.

Rowgtfc72 · 03/04/2020 21:33

Just rechecked. Players and staff.

ViciousJackdaw · 03/04/2020 21:51

I'm just wondering what it is that my own team are supposed to take the blame for.

All our staff are still on full pay. Our manager already gives up part of his salary to Common Goal, our captain and vice are organising a PL collection, we've given 40k to the foodbanks as a club, several players have donated individually to causes here and their home countries (and that's just the ones we know of). Really, what more are they supposed to do?

IamaBluebird · 03/04/2020 22:00

Thicko fans, charming turn of phrase there.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 03/04/2020 22:09

Now seen a press release (nothing from HR!) saying that players and full time staff are furloughed. No mention (yet as gain) of matchday staff...

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 03/04/2020 22:09

Again*. FML.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 03/04/2020 22:12

Well my question is when do we get to eat the rich?
My DB is a life long footy fan and he actually said he doesn't really about the football at the moment. Sounds obvious to sensible people, but up until last week - this was his life. My point is that maybe the cult of celebrity may shift and we start looking up to shelf stackers and refuge collectors.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 03/04/2020 22:12

care

The players at Hearts of Midlothian have just been furloughed. Pretty big team in Scotland.

CakeAndGin · 03/04/2020 22:26

I don’t think furloughing should be for every member of staff across all industries that can’t work. Furlough seems to be the new thing all employers are doing because it’s free money from the government. It’s terribly shortsighted and we are all (organisations and individuals) going to end up with massive taxes as a result.

For companies that have millions of £ in reserve, no I don’t think they should be furloughing staff. Even if they aren’t working, wages should be paid from the money in the organisation. At least at first. For those small business that are going to drown in debt after being closed for a few weeks, furlough is a fantastic way to help them and their staff. As for a pay cut, you have to be asked to take a pay cut, they can’t force it on you as it’s illegal. DH has been asked to take a pay cut while his company tries to get through this. However, that is probably why furlough is so popular, you can’t argue with the amount the government has set and don’t have to get your entire work force to agree to a pay cut.

Mysterian · 03/04/2020 22:51

The players at Hearts of Midlothian have just been furloughed. Pretty big team in Scotland. And my local secondary school's under 14 B team would be a pretty big team in Scotland if they moved up there. Wink

If the millionaire top players cut their salary it would mostly help the billionaire club owners. I think they should take all their salary and give a proportion to the NHS and charities.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 03/04/2020 23:24

They're employees of a wealthy company that can afford to pay them

Exactly

Neednewwellies · 04/04/2020 12:00

No, they’re not employees. They have service contracts and as such, they are not paid through PAYE and thus cannot be furloughed. That’s not to say they shouldn’t be doing anything but they cannot be furloughed. My understanding is that further down the leagues, many clubs do employ their players on a salaried basis hence why some lower league players can be furloughed. But of course, outside of the premiership and the championship, players earn average everyday salaries anyway.
