To ask how much sugar your 3 year old eats?

I know this is Mumsnet and there will be people that say their 3 year old only eats avocado and quinoa- but I’m after some real opinions please.

My 3 year old has just said his tooth hurts when he was eating lunch. I’m now in mass panic he could have tooth decay so am worrying about his diet!

He drinks weakly diluted squash, only eats sweets at a birthday party so rarely, doesn’t really eat chocolate- maybe once a fortnight. He does eat a lot of fruit (apples, grapes, strawberries, blueberries) and he has a small glass (maybe 50ml) of orange juice with breakfast.

He does eat biscuits (maybe 2/3 custard creams most days) which I will cut out and usually has one small yogurt every day which I buy the lowest sugar one available. 3/4 times a week he has an ice lolly after dinner which is possibly too much so I will cut that down too.

Can anyone let me know diets for their 3 year olds along with any suggestions of lower sugar treats than custard creams and ice lollies I would much appreciate it!

That’s an insane amount of sugar :O

@Tunnocks34
Your child's diet today is nearly spot on from a dental perspective but
there is zero nutritional value in the apple juice and it is extremely sugary. At least Orange Juice, as part of breakfast, is a good source of Vitamin C.

@waspfig
How do you get the peanut butter to mix in with the yoghurt?
I've tried and it doesn't work at all.
When I use it to make satay sauce it needs to be heated and mixed with wet ingredients.

waspfig · 05/04/2020 07:19

@IHaveBrilloHair I don't have any problems mixing it in! It is quite a runny one though, maybe that's it?

OP what struck me from your list is the number of eating "occasions", even if you're eating things like crackers and rice cakes it's not brill for your teeth if you're eating them very frequently.

Presumably custard creams and Soreen were two separate snacks

Then the apple grapes and cheese another snack

It's not clear if crisps and yoghurt were eaten with lunch or not - but that's at least three snack occasions in one morning assuming you're in UK time.

We're pretty strict on there being only one morning and one afternoon snack and try to make one savoury.

Is he brushing his teeth after breakfast? It is really bad to drink fruit juice then brush teeth as the acidity weakens the enamel and it gets brushed away. I was ruining my teeth with daily oj, I gave it up because of my teeth and instantly lost weight which shows how sugary it is.

@SnugglySnerd no we always brush before breakfast after my dentist told me this was best.
