So basically all non playing staff have been furloughed because they are not key workers
Football Players still getting paid massive salaries
Matt Hancock has asked them to take a pay cut
Gary Lineker has donated a couple of months of his BBC salary(paid by us) to the British Red Cross and will get more back in tax than the average NHS worker could make in 5years.
Apologies for link to DM but it does give the full story

Fair comment. But MPs should also take a pay cut, bet they won’t though..

I agree with Just another sugar. The issue isn't that the players get paid vast amounts in itself. The issue is that the clubs are saying they cannot afford to pay some of the support staff so asking the government to cover 80% of their salaries, while at the same time continuing to pay players vast salaries. If they reduced the players salaries, they would probably be able to afford to pay their own employees. Everything the government is now paying out will have to be paid for eventually by the public through taxes. The public is effectively paying to maintain the players vast salaries. In lots of companies, all staff are taking pay cuts to ensure no-one is sacked and the company stays solvent. It's not unreasonable for football clubs who cannot afford the maintain current costs reconsider salaries is an ethical manner.

There are hundreds of multi millionaires in this country - hedge fund managers, bankers, company owners - why are we calling out footballers alone?

Because the groundskeepers, cleaners, catering staff and everyone who keeps a football club running are being furloughed because the clubs cannot afford to pay them.

See why people, especially the club staff are annoyed? If the players took a pay cut then the club could pay for the staff at their grounds. I really could fucking weep at the greed of some people.

ginnybag · 03/04/2020 15:39

Because the government shouldn't be paying 80% salary to the staff on min wage doing the cleaning so that the club can keep paying Mr kicks-a-ball about ££££££.

If the players cough over a fraction of what they earn, the clubs can redistribute that and keep everyone on full pay without help.

Simple, really.

And not unusual - I work for an SME. We have some staff that we will have to furlough and some that will keep on working. Before the announcement was made (and after it still) our MD, myself and our other senior managers had already agreed we would pare down what we took at payroll this month (and that's our only income - just to be clear - no dividends here!) to a minimum so that we could keep cash flow in the business to keep paying staff, whether they were working or not.

We're not alone - its actually pretty common from having talked to our contacts at various places.

I suppose the alternative would be for the clubs to furlough the players as well - after all, they're currently not working!

It’s a smug posh Tory having a go at the working class. No shock there.

Why doesn’t Hancock call out all the rich folk who donated to his party of self-serving wankers?

Klj29 · 03/04/2020 17:13

Are we asking all the big city bankers etc to donate some of their wages too? What about F1 drivers and tennis players? Actors and TV personalities?
I’m not disputing that footballers earn too much, but I don’t see how one group of the high earners in our society can be singled out.

LIZS · 03/04/2020 17:24

Some tv personalities and f1 drivers already have. The reason the focus is on football is that it is the football clubs who are laying staff off and asking for government money, especially the high profile ones, when they could be self supporting.

nellythenarwhal · 03/04/2020 18:25

Footballers have had their matches cancelled and not promoting the club so you could say that they should be furloughed for now.

Ronaldo and other stars at Juventus have accepted not being paid for 3 months so the club doesn't go bust.

I read that Wimbledon has insurance that covers pandemics so are getting a £100m pay out.

This is exactly the situation....
and it beggars belief that the majority of wealthy people and companies are willing to destroy people lives, especially those on low incomes, so that the rich can stay rich(not just footballers) whilst the ordinary every day people get shafted. As if life wasn't difficult enough for everyone right now.

Erm, Leeds United already did this. Last week Bielsa and his players all agreed to take an indefinite deferral in wages to ensure the rest of the staff can be paid. Leeds are not even premier league...

MrsSnitchnose · 03/04/2020 18:41

@ChuckleBuckles Came on to say exactly that
