... Compared to same 12 days of the previous month (23rd - 3rd)? Not including the usual bills, subscriptions/direct debits and mortgage/rent, have you noticed a massive change your outgoings?

I am a self employed freelancer (as is DP) and we both rent, so definitely not an enviable position.
Between 22nd Feb and 3rd March, I just worked out that I alone spent roughly £384 on train tickets, clothes, coffees, online orders, meals out and takeaways. This same 12 days I have spent £78 (just food, essential office supplies and a cheeky lottery ticket), so that means my savings total up to about £306 in TWELVE days! I feel almost ashamed at how easily I would throw money away, and will definitely reflect on this whenever I go to buy something that I don't necessarily need in future.

It will be interesting to hear other peoples' savings stories!

I expect a lot of people to be leading more pared back lifestyles than they did previously, but it won't necessarily be through choice.

I wonder how many people though will reassess their lifestyles after this is over? Maybe this will show them how much money is wasted each month.

Kingcole · 03/04/2020 14:09

£1000 a month.

VegetableMunge · 03/04/2020 14:10

There are bound to be a lot of people who have to. But I think the ones who will have a choice about what to do that are more interesting. It's not rocket science that people who lose a lot of income have to pare down their spending, but for people with more money it could go either way.

I think there are also a lot of us who want to support small businesses more in the future too. Part of the reason my food shop has gone up is because I've spent less in supermarkets, but some of that is hopefully staying.

Jessikka · 03/04/2020 14:15

About £130 in two weeks.

PinkSpring · 03/04/2020 14:17

Not much, I have spend way more than usual on things from amazon, etc like art and craft supplies for my toddler, stuff for gardening etc

We are having less takeaways because hardly any are open near us, but our food shopping has increased

stardance · 03/04/2020 14:19

I haven't worked anything out properly but I reckon at least £300. Most weekends we take the kids out somewhere (cinema, trampoline park etc) plus we often eat out, get a takeaway, go out for coffee. It soon adds up. We're saving on fuel too as I'm not working.

PinkSpring · 03/04/2020 14:20

Ooh, I have saved about £60 which we would have usually paid a gardener to tidy up the garden - did it myself as I had the time.

TravellingSpoon · 03/04/2020 14:35

I am saving money on DS2's after school club and DD's lunches but its offset by DS1 being home from uni and everyone eating at home. Dd's netball club fees £8 a month.

Probably save a bit on petrol but I am back to work next week and have picked up extra shifts so will be driving to work more.

Esiotrot87 · 03/04/2020 14:41

We’ll be saving £1200 per month. Our train fares are £400 each per month, as well as £400 for nursery who aren’t charging us

cyantist · 03/04/2020 14:42

In that 12 days last month we spent £449. The last 12 days I have spent £2231.
Our shopping has gone up a bit through not being able to get normal brands and having to pay a lot more for the things we could get hold of, but mainly we've bought a lot of things to keep the kids occupied.
It's mainly one-off purchases though so I'll be interested to see outgoings for the same 12 days next month

safariboot · 03/04/2020 14:52

Very little. Certainly not enough to compensate for the one-two punch of a 20% pay cut and no matched betting. Petrol costs are variable (depending on which site I'm working at) and usually less than £40 a month anyway. I was already trying to cut out the Tesco meal deals and take packed lunches to work instead. I've stopped buying luxuries because I can't afford them.

Gwenhwyfar · 03/04/2020 14:55

"Surely at work, you'd have a clean shirt/blouse/whatever everyday"

No. I just wash the under tops that are close to the skin and underwear. I don't need to wash my outerclothes much.
I live alone and am therefore alone 100% of the time now so have a bit less washing as I don't even bother changing the under tops very often.

Giffgaff99 · 03/04/2020 14:57

@KenDodd - who said anyone was celebrating their savings... we have all simply stated what we have saved. #wordsinmouths

BogRollBOGOF · 03/04/2020 15:00

We're saving. DH still working in an essential support industry, I'm a SAHM. Saving on a number of children's activities and petrol. Food up a bit, but I had lunch at home anyway. Children less ravenous from moving around less. No McDonalds, quite a good habit to break (DS likes the regularity of it due to autism and struggles with many cafes/ restaurants and it's a break from me cooking.)
Less washing of swimming/ sports kits Grin

WhatWouldPennyDo · 03/04/2020 15:01

Quite a lot, we are very fortunate. It has certainly made me consider how much we spend normally that is unnecessary, and I suspect this will permanently change some of our spending habits.

£430 pm each for train fare
£100 pm each for tube fare
£140 pm parking at station
£200 pm each for lunches/coffees at work
£100 pm each for gym membership

Then there is the money we spend on regular meals out, my cut and colour, days out, clothes etc. Have had to buy another computer monitor, keyboard and mouse but will expense those through work.

On the flip side, home food bill has gone up (appreciate not spending on meals out though), as well as heating, amount of fuel for the fire, washing etc. Have given cash sums to ageing parents and siblings, one has been furloughed, the other made redundant, and neither have savings. We are still paying our cleaner, gardener and window cleaner, and have given a rent holiday on BTL for 3 months. Pensions and savings have taken a hammering.

Short to medium we are ok, even if we both get furloughed or drop hours, but longer term impact is more concerning.

TrickyKid · 03/04/2020 15:02

None. Food bill has gone up and we're surviving on one wage.

Glittertwins · 03/04/2020 15:07

Anything saved has been cancelled out by having to buy extra food to cover 2 children's lunches for two weeks and they eat a lot.
I guess we haven't gone through fuel so much due to sports clubs being cancelled but then we've had to have the heating on as it's been so cold and we've all been at home.

EwwSprouts · 03/04/2020 15:11

@HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend Household insurance should cover burst water pipe.

nancyjuice7 · 03/04/2020 15:15

As a couple:
Dog walker £125pm
Nails £43 pm
Gym £56 pm
Beauty pie £10 (thanks guys)
Weekend cottage £400 refund
Meals out £200
Holiday end May cancelled £1250 refund
Holiday spending money £400 in euros I don't know when we'll use??
Petrol £150

So yeah quite a lot

Food bill has went up by £30pw
And we've bought some house bits online for £200

CoronaIsComing · 03/04/2020 15:20

We’ve saved an embarrassing amount Blush. At least £100 per weekend on activities/ eating out, probably more actually since a meal out can cost £100 now that DS (10) eats adult meals. Plus about £40 per week on DS’s activities. About £15 per week on lunches for me (£3 Morrison’s meal deal type things) and a LOT on DH paying for coffees and meals for his team members (although he can claim most of that back from his work). £60 in petrol for me ( although I can claim about £40 back from my work, DH has a fuel card so nothing there).

We have spent more on food as there seems to be no offers on in the supermarkets but I doubt we’ve spent much more on heating, electricity or washing. I did buy some toys and work books for DS at the beginning which came to over £100.

We’re also getting a £4200 refund on our skiing holiday that we should be going on on Wednesday 😢 and obviously we won’t need spending money for it now.

itssquidstella · 03/04/2020 15:28

I've spent much less on things like eating out, takeaway coffees and drinks in the pub. Even despite going on an online clothes shopping splurge, I've got more money in my account than I normally would at this point in the month.

However, we've spent probably double what we'd normally spend, if not more, on food, so the joint account is pretty depleted. Swings and roundabouts!

thecatsarecrazy · 03/04/2020 15:32

Shopping in Sainsbury's is costing more than a big Lidl shop but no fuel, no McDonald's or spoons 😳 no cups of coffee out and about. Not sure what we have saved but should be quite a lot

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 03/04/2020 15:42

I haven't saved anything on laundry, I must have tripled the amount of laundry I normally do (which is 1 to 2 loads a day) because I am home, so I have time, the weather has been beautiful and I have washed pretty much everything that I could think about and could fit in my machine Grin

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 03/04/2020 15:48

If the concept of working from home is maintained in the future, for all the workers who CAN do it obviously.., a lot of us would keep saving a huge amount on commuting. Now the companies have the systems in place, it shouldn't be impossible.

At least something positif would come out of this.

leiaskye · 03/04/2020 16:10

I havent calculated but I’m sure we’ll have spent more.

DH bought 2 Apple Macs for the children (refurbished, but still extra expense)
& himself a new office chair.

Then there’s the extra gas bill for heating & electricity for the telly/computers/radio - something is on all day.

We’ve subscribed to Disney plus, so another £60 there.

I’m still paying my cleaner & childminder despite not using them. But not the dog walker (not using her either of course).

No petrol costs though, & DH has got a refund on his season train ticket. Food is probably less expensive as none is eaten out now.

We’re not pub goers but do go to cinema approx once a month as a family. That’s of course on hold now.
