To think businesses deliberately profiteering lately will suffer long term?

I phoned our vets yesterday, that we have used for over 15 years. One of our dogs needed another prescription/supply of medication they have to have regularly for a minor but chronic condition. Usually this is prescribed when I phone the vets for it, with a yearly 'review' appointment.

When I phoned the vets I was told that it was time for the yearly review, and that they weren't doing in person appointments, only telephone ones, and I wouldn't be able to get the medication without the review. The cost of the 'telephone appointment' was £90, plus the cost of medication. Normal consultation fee is £48.

The vet then phoned me for the consultation/review, which took all of 5 minutes and was just a case of 'is this drug still working?' 'Yes' 'oh great we can continue on it then'. I then had to go and collect the medication.

I am absolutely gobsmacked that they have hiked their prices up so much and just for a phone consultation which took only a few minutes. Once things are more normal again I will definitely be looking for a new vet and taking our custom elsewhere because of this.

AIBU to think that people will think twice in future before using companies that have taken the piss in the current situation?

That's madness. Did you call them out on the discrepancy on the phone? If so how did they justify it?

EatingIsMyHobby · 02/04/2020 12:55

I said 'wow that's steep' and the receptionist just said it was the cost of a telephone consultation.

YANBU.

The pubs and hotels locally who've been taking orders for their wholesalers from the public at very reasonable prices and doing delivery will get my custom after this is all over. They're essential for keeping my family fed.

The local farm shop who charged me £90 for a £40 box of goods (£15 for a block of cheese that would usually be about £4!) certainly won't be, nor the idiotic local landlord who kept his bar open after the government said to shut.

And I've finally stopped buying stuff from Amazon after learning how they're treating their staff (putting them at huge risk) and after seeing a single bag of crisps for £17 and an ear thermometer for £70 on their site.

Businesses selling shit who are profiteering, yes. Vets... Not sure, could it be that they've had to put their prices at emergency levels because all routine appts are cancelled and otherwise they'll go under and we'll have no care for our animals?

I took one of my cats in the other day for something I couldn't sort at home and it was normal charges, but I guess each practice differs?

YADNBU. Greed seems to rife at the moment. They’ve still got to face their maker, though.

heartsonacake · 02/04/2020 13:03

after seeing a single bag of crisps for £17 and an ear thermometer for £70 on their site.

whatdayisitandotherquestions That’s Amazon sellers, not Amazon themselves.

By all means boycott them for the way they treat their staff but you can’t penalise them for greedy sellers.

QueenOfWinterfell · 02/04/2020 13:07

YADNU and I hope everyone does continue to support the businesses who haven’t made money out of this crisis or treated staff badly. I won’t be using Wetherspoons again because of the way staff were ‘let go’

MulticolourMophead · 02/04/2020 13:22

I think these businesses wil suffer to some extent. My local FB pages are listing those local companies they want to support now and later.

WorraLiberty · 02/04/2020 13:25

YANBU. My local council has an email address for reporting profiteering businesses.

I can’t get nappy pants for my daughter, I have one left. I need maternity pads for when I’m in hospital. I just want the cheap boots ones I used with my first child. Sold out. I can’t buy things I just need. I’m not going to five different shops and risking my unborn baby. There are some on eBay for quite a bit more money. I refuse to pay over the odds. Will keep looking online for them.
