To cancel sky direct debits half way though contract because I can’t get through to them!

I am looking to cut expenditure wherever I can as been made redundant.

I would like to downgrade my sky package and remove sky cinema

I can’t get through to them! On hold for ages. I’m mid way through contract so can’t do online. I’d still keep my broadband and talk package with them - so would be reducing the debit by £12

What do you think? Ok to do in the circumstance?

@gingerscot
And yet, They've managed to keep all their sales stuff going.
If they want to reduce calls, they should make downgrading possible online.

Bringringbring12 · 02/04/2020 09:09

Got through!

2 min conversation and they removed. All good. Brilliant start to the day!

Oh well done @Bringringbring12

Which number did you use please?

Brefugee · 02/04/2020 09:23

the direct debit isn't the contract so the direct debit has to be paid (and as PP said, Sky control that, not you) until the contract is cancelled.

AFAIK your contract has dates when you can cancel/change?

in your position I'd send them (recorded delivery if you can) a letter, or email, and say that you're cancelling your package with immediate effect (or outline what it is you want) and get them to confirm it in writing. That's about all you can do.

Brefugee · 02/04/2020 09:24

that'll teach me to RTFT! Good news, OP!

Thank you. I'll try it today

You did well OP. It took me nearly 3 weeks of trying last month.

Funnily enough when I told them to cancel our contract, our price dropped from £150 a month to £99.................

I'm sorry what?????? Confused

£150.00 a MONTH for SKY? Shock What on earth???

When we last had it (around 2014,) it was around £50 a month - which we thought was too much as it wasn't that great really, and we could get most of the channels on freesat and freeview!

We bought a freesat box in 2014 for £220 (that we still have!) It paid for itself within 4 months.

We now pay £33 a month for our internet and landline, and that is all we have been paying since late 2014!

Seriously, I have no idea why people pay such exorbitant amounts for SKY TV. Netflix is eight quid a month. WTF? Confused

@Bringringbring12 Glad you got it sorted.

I rang sky yesterday and got through within 10 mins or so- I'm NHS Key Worker and in Vulnerable group. The phone number I rang gave me the option of pausing sky sports so I said no and was put through to someone who has reduced my sky package- got rid of sports and sky movies. I rang yesterday afternoon so maybe I rang at a quiter time. I've saved a lot of money on my monthly bill so it was well worth doing.

Yogamad38 · 02/04/2020 14:10

I got out payment down to £42 a month.

Stuckfornow · 02/04/2020 16:58

For anyone that can’t get through my mum and brother both paused their sports packages on the app, not sure if there’s an option on there for any others as I don’t have sky tv. Hope this helps.

safariboot · 02/04/2020 17:10

Good to hear OP sorted it out.

In general, if you cannot contact a service provider by other means, write to them. And keep a record of what you have sent.

Remember you have little power to cancel or change while you're still in the initial contract period. But a price rise is one case where you normally do.

Cancelling a direct debit does not cancel what it is paying for and can result in serious problems. Cancelling the DD via your bank is a last resort.

My DP works for sky. When they specified “key workers”, they meant workers who are dependent on phone line and internet connection for working from home apparently, so not frontline NHS etc (very badly worded and confusing). As many staff as possible are working from home, plus skeletal staff in call centres, so they are trying to prioritise helping people work (essential) and not clog up the lines with queries about tv packages etc.
