To ask how to do my roots

Minor problem but I I look like a skunk. Have not coloured own hair for 20 years and normally visit hairdresser who uses foils and puts blonde and brown through to overall give a blonde look. I obviously cannot visit my hairdresser at the moment but I feel a mess and want to perk it up until I can. Naturally I am mousy.

Last time I DID do my own hair I used a dark blonde but it came out with a dark green tinge although this was many years ago.

I have very little bleach in my hair as my hairdresser uses tint.

Tell me a simple way to do my roots - seriously - without it turning my whole head a funny colour.

Please don’t do your own hair...chances are it will go wrong Sad

ilovedjerrymore · 01/04/2020 21:45

I tired a couple of times in the past to do my own hair and both ended up with me going back to the hairdressers to have it sortedGrin

KittyMcTitty · 01/04/2020 21:49

Don’t do it! I wish I hadn’t! I now have orange roots (wish I’d taken my own advice!)

fortunatelynot · 01/04/2020 21:52

Oh god, I thought you all might say its easy and I could just paint it on and comb it through. My roots look vile.

I’m in the same boat!

JanewaysBun · 01/04/2020 21:54

I do my own roots and hairdressers can never tell.

I comb it in the top and blend it, I use a marginally darker colour than my highlights

Badassmama · 01/04/2020 22:01

I’ve coloured my own hair for years and pretty much every colour out there!

Loads of products around specifically for roots now- www.superdrug.com/Hair/Hair-Colourants/Root-Touch-up/Nice-n-Easy-Root-Touch-Up-Dark-Blonde-7/p/750686.

Top tips are-

  1. Buy 2 boxes just in case.
  2. Do your hairline first, then the top section, then back/sides
  3. Comb through when all is done

don’t expect your full highlights as usual, it will look like you’re growing some highlights out, but make you feel a lot better.

Are you blonde? You could buy a lemon, comb it through your hair and sit in the sun. Next time I am in the supermarket I'll pick up some lemon juice or lemons. It might blend in with the greys a bit ;)

There is also a product called Color Wow that you might be able to get online.

fortunatelynot · 01/04/2020 22:05

Thanks for the tips. So do you just brush it onto the roots or massage it in?

I've coloured my own hair for about fifteen years - can't afford to go to the hairdresser to get it done so box dyes it is Grin

Though having said that I just do my whole head - not sure I'd be brave enough to do the roots if I'd been getting to hilighted professionally!

Pukkatea · 01/04/2020 22:20

I colour my own hair and honestly I wouldn't- you won't have any of the highlighting or tones, it will probably look brassy and one dimensional and generally cheapen the look of your hair. Not to mention, box dyes can then cause problems later for hairdressers depending on what products they use to colour.

speakout · 01/04/2020 22:27

I have been doing my own colour for 10 years.
Even my hairdresser says it's a good job.
I am naturally dark brown, with a fair bit of grey on the top and crown. I use a box dye, the same shade every time.
I touch up my roots every 3-4 weeks.
Section my hair, apply dye close to the roots only, leave for required time. Apply remainder of dye to the rest of my hair forthe last 3 or 4 minutes ( to prevent colour build up)then wash it all out.
Easy peasy.

I am alwasy happy with the results.

Slinkymalinky1 · 01/04/2020 22:32

Same! Wear hair bands, scarfs etc, do not attempt to do this yourself, there's a reason why hair dressers is big business

Slinkymalinky1 · 01/04/2020 22:33

Trying to get roots blonde is a whole different ball game to sticking a darker colour on, don't do it!

fortunatelynot · 01/04/2020 22:35

I am being put off very quickly!

Do any of those root wands (or whatever they are called) work?

Isolatinginthekitchen · 01/04/2020 22:36

If I had a blonde ballyage with brown natural hair would I be mad to stick a brown box dye on it? Was thinking I'd probably just end up with overall brown tones? Am I mad? 😂

BIWI · 01/04/2020 22:38

You need this @fortunatelynot!

Really easy and very effective.

WellTidy · 01/04/2020 22:39

speakout which box dye do you use please? Is it permanent or semi?

I have an all over dark brown tint every six weeks at the salon. They leave it on the roots for 20 minutes and then take it through to the ends for the last 5 minutes. I will need to redo my roots in about a month and have never done my own colour before in 15 years of colouring.

Santaclauswhosthat · 01/04/2020 22:41

Anyone whose hairdresser uses bleach, I really wouldn't try anything yourself at home.

For those who use dark colours, this is a really good method. Just ignore the promo bits obviously.

LouiseTrees · 01/04/2020 22:42

I am using L’Oréal Magic retouch spray. I feel it works. I will not box dye and ruin my hair even if the retouch spray needs redone loads it stays in all day and I really like it

Santaclauswhosthat · 01/04/2020 22:42

(The video above shows you a method where you get all the roots, not just the ones at your parting. Better than doing your whole head every time as well.)

fortunatelynot · 01/04/2020 22:48

I can't believe it, the touch up spray which looks great is sold out on Amazon!!!!

Everybody has the same problem I guess.

OP posts:
BIWI · 01/04/2020 22:48

If you can get to a Boots the next time you go shopping, they sell it

BIWI · 01/04/2020 22:49

... mind you, given the number of us sharing these worries, perhaps it's going to be as scarce as toilet roll Grin

GreenLeafedLemon · 01/04/2020 22:49

The sprays are good, but don’t last long.
If you have dark hair, choose a lighter shade than your hair is.
If you are a mousy brown, maybe choose a dark blonde, or dark ash blonde, and just dye your roots, as someone mentioned. Just paint it on really.
I often use the brush from a root touch up that I’ve kept from the Clairol root touch up .
Those are also good, but if you leave it too long, one box isn’t enough.
For actual blonde hair, I think it may be more difficult.
My platinum friend has just given her self. Slightly ginger roots, but it does look better than the black ones she had before, and she thinks it will all go with some purple shampoo. 😀
