Terrified is it serious for heartbeat to pound from 74 to 94 whenever I stand up?

I've been managing specific anxiety about another health problem since before the Coronavirus and not sure if it plus the virus are giving me severe stress.

I am now really worried I am on the edge of having a heart attack because of the constant palpitations. I am self isolating and the idea of going to a Dr terrifies me as I need to stay indoors.

When I stand up my heart pounds and goes up by 20 beats, if I watch the monitor it goes up and up can go up to 115.

But this afternoon went from 74 to 94 as I got up to make a cup of tea, then went down to 75 again as I sat down and now I'm also scared to take a beta blocker in case it goes down too low?

I just feel like crying at the thought of trying to get a phone appointment with whatever doctor is available I feel like I just want to try to calm down and relax but is that ignoring a serious terrifying problem? My anxiety is making it impossible to figure out what is the most immediate threat?

@Terrifedaboutheart your heart is doing what it should, when you stand up it is designed to beat a bit quicker to ensure blood gets up into your brain. Don’t you worry about that at all, it’s behaving just right.

I too, have health anxiety that has caused me to focus on my heart In the past. A day of high anxiety kept my heart in an irregular rhythm for a full day, so much so I attended hospital as I was so scared. My heart was fast (because I was anxious) but it’s rhythm sorted itself out. I’ve not had it since. They said the adrenaline that floods your body when you’re highly anxious can kick your heart into all sorts of funny rhythms. But they’re not life threatening.

Please try to focus on your coping mechanisms because it sounds like you’re really normal. Also you’ll find if you’re distracted your heart won’t capture your attention.

Op from the figures you've given there is nothing wrong with your heart rate and be careful with heart rate monitors. They are not always accurate and can lag which gives the impression of the rate jumping up quickly then down.

myfav · 02/04/2020 00:00

It's normal to increase to some extent. My heart rate can increase to 200bpm upon standing and blood pressure drop, causes issues with dizziness but nothing serious.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 02/04/2020 08:28

@myfav that is something i would get checkShock unless you are doing 50 superfast jumping jacks while standing up. 200 IS high for just that move.

titchy · 02/04/2020 09:47

Yeah myfav that's significantly high sorry. One of my dcs has a serious heart rhythm issue and it doesn't go that high on standing. GP ASAP. That might well be PoTS, or something else.

Sorry titchy just realised you weren’t talking to the op.

Hello, sorry to chime is so late. Have you ever got an answer from the GP? I too have something similar, I have a Fitbit and it says my resting heart rate is 79 but throughout the day it's constantly in the 80s 90s and if I'm just getting out of bed to go the the toilet or doing some housework it's about 106. It's very scary, I am waiting for CBT to try and help with my health anxiety. I have had ecgs and echos which have all been normal. O hope you're ok x

singsingbluesilver · 09/05/2021 08:46

You also don't mention your age. When I started to go through the menopause my hard beat so quickly and so loudly at times I was terrified something was seriously wrong withe me. My GP sent me to a specialist and I had a heart monitor on for a couple of days. Yes, my heart rate was 'racing' at times but it was down to my age the specialist said.

It still happens but I am more reassured now.

Moxxi · 09/05/2021 09:27

I'm 26

JamesAnderson · 09/05/2021 11:02

@Moxxi I would say that's fairly normal.

Here's my heart rate data from my galaxy watch from yesterday. Can you guess what time I got up?

My average resting rate is normally my sleeping rate, so if fitbit is taking your asleep rate and telling you that's your resting heart rate it'll always be higher during the day when you're awake

That's so so reassuring thank you so much! I really appreciate it.

Do you think I'm ok then? Like I'm worried I'm going to die :(

JamesAnderson · 09/05/2021 12:29

I would think so, especially if all the tests the doctor has done have come back normal

McPie · 09/05/2021 13:11

When you stand up your lower limb muscles suddenly need oxygen to produce movement so the oxygen is sent to the now working muscles, as a result your heart rate will increase to allow this to happen, its just the bodies way of maintaining homeostasis. I would definitely stop using the heart rate and blood pressure monitors if their readings are increasing your anxiety, without them you wouldn't have known about this normal increase in heart rate when standing up.

This is mine today so far.
