to be angry about this

We've just moved to a new town and one of the neighbours is putting a weekly note through the door about the clapping for the NHS. We have two dogs and two young children.

Last week people stood on the doorstep and clapped, as is their right, but we've just had another note through the door saying it is going to be a weekly event and asking if anybody has got any musical instruments or fireworks Shock

This is beyond a joke, we have dogs and small children to deal with. Fireworks?! Musical instruments?! At bedtime?!

Oh come on. I’d not be pleased either!

PeskyRooks · 01/04/2020 14:59

It's a bit much isn't it? And it's going to get old really quickly.

whitesoxx · 01/04/2020 15:00

😂 they set fireworks off round here last week. It's going to get ridiculous

user1495884620 · 01/04/2020 15:03

Because the emergency services really need to be dealing with firework related accidents at the moment.

koshkatt · 01/04/2020 15:04

Only utter dickheads let off fireworks - they frighten both pet and wild animals terribly. They should be banned.

TheFuckingDogs · 01/04/2020 15:04

It will totally take away from the importance of the message if it is done weekly. Also as many nhs staff keep saying, clapping for them is lovely but they would prefer adequate ppe

Witchofzog · 01/04/2020 15:04

It will be over and done with before it starts. Our street had fireworks last week which lasted for about 3 minutes. I know it's frustrating when you have dogs, but unless your children are babies why don't you let them watch from the window before they go to sleep. Tell them it's a special treat instead of a story before bed. And put the dogs in a room with white noise to drown out the fireworks. There is no point in getting angry about it as it is going to happen any way. Instead find ways of making it better for your household

Soubriquet · 01/04/2020 15:06

Yanbu

It’s all very well clapping for the nhs but in reality what good does it do?

We would be better off donating things to them, or raising money for more equipment

BuffaloCauliflower · 01/04/2020 15:06

Yeh I’ve heard people want to do it again. Pretty hypocritical from a country that just overwhelmingly voted Tory

OptimisticSix · 01/04/2020 15:07

I'd be annoyed too. I'm not doing it because I know next door has a baby and to be fair it all seems a little daft to me (sorry ducks). I really appreciate anyone who is still working now, it's amazing, but I will not be making a racket and disturbing my neighbours to prove it. I may however leave my bin men a tip if I ever manage to get to a cash point.

Womencanlift · 01/04/2020 15:07

I get the concern about firework accidents but come on, some noise will take a bit longer to get kids to sleep - what’s the harm? That’s absolutely nothing compared to what front line staff are having to deal with for hours day in, day out. Have a little respect!

BuffaloCauliflower · 01/04/2020 15:07

@Soubriquet we’re meant to fund them through our taxes. Vote for parties that want to fund them properly and there would be no need for fundraisers

PurpleCrazyHorse · 01/04/2020 15:10

The kids have done some thank you pictures for the front windows (for a variety of front-line staff), we didn't clap.

MouthBreathingRage · 01/04/2020 15:13

I wasnt particularly impressed with this clapping malarkey first time around. I appreciate the NHS as much as anyone (especially after the last few days), but clapping outside and certainly releasing dangerous fireworks isn't the way now. Things are about to get a lot worse over the next week, people need to stay indoors more than ever.

A clap is nice, but I dont think people generally realise how much trouble the NHS is in. A clap and a cheer will very quickly become nothing more than an empty sentiment.

Thighmageddon · 01/04/2020 15:13

Oh yes, let's let fireworks off increasing the risk of injury and someone requiring an ambulance and possible admission to hospital.

Some people are just cretinous dicks.

My thoughts exactly. Hmm

HopeYouStepOnALego · 01/04/2020 15:17

I'm fine with clapping, and I wouldn't be too bothered about musical instruments provided it didn't get silly and go on for ages. I live on a main road and lots of cars were sounding their horns, so same sort of thing. I'd get seriously pissed off though if fireworks became a regular thing. If people have money to spare on something that is set alight and gone in moments, then the money would be better spent on donating to PPE equipment.

mynameiscalypso · 01/04/2020 15:19

We have it every night here at 8pm, clapping and pan banging etc. I think it's just a couple of houses though and I imagine they'll give up soon.

Thighmageddon · 01/04/2020 15:22

I'd totally lose my shirt with that. Nightly? Why?

I didn't clap last week because we live in aTory stronghold area so the hypocrisy of them out honking their horns and clapping was just to much to bear. So I stomped around the house muttering swearwords at 8pm last week.

tootiredtoconga · 01/04/2020 15:22

Fireworks and musical instruments is completely OTT. The clapping is all well and good but if people insist on doing it week in, week out for months it'll completely lose it's impact.

Thighmageddon · 01/04/2020 15:23

Shit, I'd lose my shit and not my forking shirt 😂

mynameiscalypso · 01/04/2020 15:25

Fuck knows @Thighmageddon, pretty sure our street is full of hypocrites (ie Tory voters) too.

CassieAuLait · 01/04/2020 15:28

I doubt many people have stockpiled fireworks, or will be able to buy any now.

It’s 5 mins max and as everyone does it outside their own house you won’t have the whole street’s noise under your window.

Whatever you think about this particular initiative, in the long run you will be glad you moved into a sociable, community minded road

AlexaCrowe · 01/04/2020 15:29

My thoughts as a non NHS worker - if I was an NHS worker this would irritate me. They’re underpaid and undervalued and now people want to clap them? How would you feel if your boss underpaid and undervalued you but instead gave you a round of applause every Friday afternoon 🙄 to me it’s annoying and patronising. I’m not an NHS worker though, so maybe they like it. Probably not if it’s Tory voters clapping though.

If I was an NHS worker I’d be annoyed about how many idiots were going to be admitted to hospital with firework related injuries. I’m sure the police and fire service aren’t overly thrilled about it either!

Stop clapping. Stop voting in parties who want to destroy the NHS.
