This is not an NHS/Drs bashing thread, the care we receive in normal circumstances is 2nd to none. I am probably UR.

DD is 5. Showing signs of an infection in her bladder: weeing frequently, lots of wet accidents, crying when she is using the toilet saying she can’t go but really needs to, slight temperature (38.2), pain in her back above her hips, irritable moodwise.

Apart from the temperature she has no symptoms of Covid-19. Last week she was prescribed antibiotics over the phone for 3 days. She perked up a bit then went downhill again and after the last dose yesterday just seemed to get worse. She’s usually really laid back and happy about everything, she’s generally an adult pleaser and up until the end of last week very keen to do her schoolwork. I’ve had to battle her to get her to do her schoolwork since before she started the antibiotics, she’s not interested in doing anything but sitting, she’s turned her nose up at every meal offered and she’s usually one to eat everything on her plate and expect seconds. I’ve also had to bribe her to drink, as she says if she drinks it’ll make the pain worse, usually I leave a cup of water (250ml) and just refill it when it’s empty and must refill it 4 or 5 times a day, I’ve been having to bribe her with squash and chocolate milkshake just to get her to drink 1 cup.

I know my DD isn’t right, I just know.

Rang the Drs back today and was told that she’d need an appointment and because she had a slight temperature she was query for the virus. I expected this. I also expected full hazmat suit and mask due to the indicators for the virus.

We followed the rules, waited outside the surgery at a separate entrance, and waited to be called in by the Dr.

He didn’t examine her, he didn’t take her temperature (just trusted me), he barely looked at her. Basically we wasted an appointment.

I asked about a sample and he gave me a sample bottle but said there was no point putting one in as they’re currently not allowed to test samples and the lab isn’t accepting anything except covid samples. He said he didn’t think it was a bladder infection (without testing a sample or examining her Hmm) and to just get her to drink plenty of water. Her thought at best given the answer to his questions from DD it might be thrush but he can’t prescribe the cream for her I’d have to go to the chemist and get some (which I am fine with I’ve always been happy to pay for medicines that me and DD need). I have had thrush, I know what it looks like and it’s not thrush, she’s a bit red down there but not spotty or dry.

I am frustrated. Not at the Dr for following procedure and doing everything to protect me and my DD, but at the virus for meaning that basic medical care can’t be given for a simple bladder infection. I am angry my DD is in pain and irritable and there’s nothing I can do for her. I’ve seen this Dr before and he’s usually very through so I’m not going to complain but I am frustrated and don’t know what to do to help my DD.

Like I said probably UR. Didn't know where to put this so MNHQ feel free to move it

Don't have any suggestions I'm afraid but I've had numerous bladder infections and they're so awful so can't imagine how your poor daughter feels! Could you try some home remedies to see if that could ease symptoms for her?

MitziK · 31/03/2020 17:42

You do need to make her drink. Whatever the cause, her becoming dehydrated will make it worse, as anybody who has ever had cystitis can confirm - the more concentrated the urine, the worse the pain.

She will also benefit from the usual pouring water over the area.

But I would ask for another appointment if the antifungal doesn't help.

StealthMama · 31/03/2020 17:44

I'd be frustrated at the gp to be honest if he didn't even examine her :( that's not fair. What was the point of going in, they could have just done a telephone appointment for all the good it did.

Take her back if she worsens or doesn't improve in 48 hrs.

MyCrap · 31/03/2020 17:45

Please do push for the doctor to see her again. My aunt died today with a uti / kidney infection that turned to sepsis.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 31/03/2020 17:48

“Pain in her back above her hips”. Was this mentioned to the GP? I’m no medic but this suggest a kidney infection. I had it once and provided a urine sample at the surgery which the doctor tested with a strip in front of me. And then got a prescription for a/bs. I can’t remember now but I think it was at least a week.

Please make another appointment

GoAwayCovid · 31/03/2020 17:50

“Pain in her back above her hips”

Yes I mentioned it on the phone when triaged and the Dr asked her to show him where it hurts and she showed him.

It sounds so much like a kidney infection. I'd get back on to them, you're right to trust your instincts.

WhineWineWhineWineWhineWine · 31/03/2020 18:23

Has you been giving her calpol for the pain?
She does need to drink more, no the labs aren’t testing urine samples at the moment. Keep making her drink, run her a bath and encourage her to wee when in it so it doesn’t sting, it may help her drink more often to flush it out, by all means stick her in the shower to pee each time if it helps, a hot water bottle/heat pad can help on the kidney area but she needs to drink plenty of water. If you are having to bribe her to drink she already isn’t drinking enough.

WhineWineWhineWineWhineWine · 31/03/2020 18:26

But yes, call surgery again if it continues.

GoAwayCovid · 31/03/2020 18:26

I will ring 111 tomorrow and see what they suggest I think. I am getting her to drink but I'm having to bribe her with squash which is unlike her, she's usually fine with water and only has squash at mealtimes.

Yes I've been giving calpol. Will try putting her in the bath thank you she loves baths.

Will she eat ice lollies as a way of getting a small amount of fluids?

CastleCrasher · 31/03/2020 18:33

Can you order the test strips from Amazon on prime (or buy from chemist, not sure if they sell them?) then you can test for a kidney infection yourself? Then phone back or treat with home remedy if that's enough to help?

Reginabambina · 31/03/2020 18:33

I would call 111 now in our place.

Awful for you. If the lab won't test, I think the GP should proceed as if it is an infection. Can you get a course of antibiotics from a GP over the internet? It costs but you sound very worried.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/03/2020 18:37

Ice cream and yoghurt class as fluids.

IceBearRocks · 31/03/2020 18:39

The gp could have easily carried out a dip test for nitrates which would indicate an infection.

GoAwayCovid · 31/03/2020 18:39

She's gone to bed now but will try ice lollies, ice cream and yogurt tomorrow alongside milk and squash. Thank you

He said they're not allowed to at the moment, something to do with virus, assuming they may think it spreads via urine?

Poor girl. Doctors are notoriously shit and dismissive with UTIs at the best of times. Try d-mannose and call the surgery again tomorrow for a second opinion on the phone

This Dr is usually pretty through when seeing patients, I've never had reason to doubt him before.

BelfryBat · 31/03/2020 18:45

The last time I had a pain when I peed, the GP did a test for blood in my urine then and there. Your poor DD, kidney infections are very painful. Have you explained to her why she needs to drink a lot?

Noooblerooble · 31/03/2020 18:49

If you can get some Robinson's barley water it can help reduce the pain when she wees. Or boil some pearl barley in water, discard the barley and add squash to the water to disguise the taste. I think bicarb in water is also soothing.

GetOffTheTableMabel · 31/03/2020 18:55

Poor little poppet. DD1 used to get repeated UTIs when she was 2. She even had an ultrasound and it showed she had a slightly shortened urethra. I was advised that she should not used perfumed bath products and that she would grow out if it, which she eventually did. When we were trying to cope with the constant urge to go, she used to enjoy sitting in the bath which helped to stop that sensation.
I’m afraid you’re going to have to be insistent in her behalf. Could you ask for a telephone consultation with a female doctor? Female GPS are generally more sympathetic about this and take less convincing that a UTI is involved.

GoAwayCovid · 31/03/2020 18:58

Could you ask for a telephone consultation with a female doctor?

When we were triaged we spoke to a female nurse who was also certain it was a UTI, and we spoke to a female nurse practitioner who prescribed the antibiotics last week so I will ring and ask to speak to them again.
