To ask about very vulnerable v high risk groups?

Hennypenny95 · 31/03/2020 17:03

So 1.5m people are considered very vulnerable and have had letters saying they need to self-isolate for 12 weeks. I've seen the list of conditions on the website and I get that. But others are considered high risk groups, again there's a list on the site regarding which conditions this covers. I get that too. What I'm unsure about is what the difference is between how the two groups are expected to behave as I was under the impression that if you're in a high risk group, you should also be self-isolating for 12 weeks. Am I missing something here? Also, what if people have multiple conditions on the high risk list that make them even more vulnerable than someone with only one? Sorry for the stupid question, but can someone enlighten me please? Thanks in advance.

Info here www.gov.uk/coronavirus-extremely-vulnerable

It lists what illnesses

You or friend can register for extra help

The criteria is strict

Includes pregnant women

TheLarkDescending · 31/03/2020 17:09

It only includes pregnant women with significant heart disease, not all pregnant women

AlunWynsKnee · 31/03/2020 17:10

It only includes some pregnant women. Those with a heart condition.
There are two groups of vulnerable people. The Extremely Vulnerable, who received the letter to isolate for 12 weeks (chemo, immune problems etc) and the vulnerable (other pregnant women, neuro issues etc) who were originally picked out 2 weeks ago as needing to do stringent distancing.
The extremely vulnerable will get help. The vulnerable won't.

Hennypenny95 · 31/03/2020 17:19

That's what I thought AlunWynsKnee. I wasn't sure how they expected the less vulnerable to socially isolate without help. Some people in that category are alone.

Lots of misunderstanding on this.

Advice for Everyone
More info here:
www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/

You should only leave the house for 1 of 4 reasons:

â—‹ shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible
○ one form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle – alone or with members of your household
â—‹ any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person
â—‹ travelling to and from work, but only where this absolutely cannot be done from home

High Risk Group
More info here:
www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/advice-for-people-at-high-risk/

â—‹ over 70s
â—‹ All pregnant women
â—‹ Anyone who qualifies for a free flu jab

Advise is the same as for general public (inc being able to work, if unavoidable). But they need to take extra special care to adhere.

Very Vulnerable Group
More info here:
www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-on-shielding-and-protecting-extremely-vulnerable-persons-from-covid-19/guidance-on-shielding-and-protecting-extremely-vulnerable-persons-from-covid-19

â—‹ Solid organ transplant recipients.
â—‹ People with specific cancers:people with cancer who are undergoing active chemotherapy
â—‹ People with severe respiratory conditions including all cystic fibrosis, severe asthma and severe COPD.
â—‹ People with rare diseases and inborn errors of metabolism that significantly increase the risk of infections (such as SCID, homozygous sickle cell).
â—‹ People on immunosuppression therapies sufficient to significantly increase risk of infection.
â—‹ Women who are pregnant with significant heart disease, congenital or acquired.

These people are being "shielded" with the most stringent needs to not leave home.

Thanks Fate - that should clear it up.

I'm in the very vulnerable group and alone. It's not much fun!! Managed to get a Tesco delivery for the 19th April but that's the first slot I could get

kilisibird · 31/03/2020 18:09

Fate

•	are 70 or older
•	are pregnant
•	have a condition that may increase your risk from coronavirus

There is no mention of flu jab in your link re Higher risk, yet you have posted it as if it's a quote. Where did that come from?

kilisibird · 31/03/2020 18:10

To clarify what I posted is what the link actually says

JulesJules · 31/03/2020 18:30

ClientQueen have you filled in the online form to register? One of the qs is if you are able to get food - councils are delivering food boxes straight away, and phoning people to establish what extra help they need. I think they are also passing the info to supermarkets, Sainsburys said they would be emailing with priority delivery slots.

Selfsettling3 · 31/03/2020 18:32

Sainsbury are not taking on new customers for delivery even if you are extremely vulnerable.

Selfsettling3 · 31/03/2020 18:32

Other supermarkets don’t seem to be doing anything.

ClientQueen · 31/03/2020 20:41

@JulesJules yep, nothing
Sainsbury's don't recognise me as vulnerable Hmm

FATEdestiny · 31/03/2020 20:45

kilisibird - I typed it rather than copy and pasting that bit. Click the link and it breaks down the specifics. But they are the same as the factors which qualify you for a free flu jab every year. I just simplified it because I was swear my post was already long/wordy

JulesJules · 01/04/2020 06:36

Tesco email today said that when they get the list of the most vulnerable people from the government, they will be contacting them, and their orders will be prioritised.
The Sainsburys email said the same, but said 'where these people are already registered with us' they would be contacted and offered a delivery slot. So I think this is being done but it hasn't happened yet.
I filled in the Gov.uk form at the end of last week, someone from the city council has phoned to see if I'm OK and if I need anything. They are getting volunteers to pick up shopping and prescriptions.
In our local market, the traders have got together to do deliveries of boxes of fruit and veg, bakery items, beans/pasta/rice, milk butter and eggs. They can't guarantee when to deliver as it's been very popular, they said 1-5 days on their fb page.

Queenofthestress · 01/04/2020 06:47

I'm not sure what I'm going to do to be honest (extremely vunerable due to missing part of my lung) we're running out of food, I have no one to get it for me so I'm going to have to use the community groups and pray someone I don't know will have to go. I know some shopping centers will be using the government lists and contacting those that are very vunerable so I'm hoping that they get the list soon and someone will offer me a slot to get food in

Redcherries · 01/04/2020 07:38

Best advice I can give is to join local Facebook groups, on ours the local butchers, bakeries and greengrocers that are delivering are posting and keeping people up to date to availability.

Mary1935 · 01/04/2020 07:51

Queenofthestress - have you looked on your local councils website - they are assisting vulnerable groups. There was also a COVID-19 MUTUAL AID UK.
Try these.

Queenofthestress · 05/04/2020 07:36

@Mary1935 after your wonderful suggestion I got in touch and managed to get someone to drop me off food shopping Grin thank you Flowers I think I was having bit of a flap over it but you helped
