I've posted on the parenting bit, but am getting no traffic, so apologies for posting on AIBU but I know that it's more active! My DD is year 7 (aged 11) and struggles a lot with reading thanks to a slow working memory and dyslexia. She has quite a sharp sense of humour, though, and it's difficult to find short books with unchallenging vocabulary but engaging content. Please recommend!

Asterix!

Have you seen that Audible have lots kf kids books for free right now. I know its not the same as reading but my 12 year old is loving it.
She's also reading Malory Towers to tie in with the Bbc program.
What about Diary of a Wimpy kid? Mine both loved those and the language isn't too complex. They're funny too Smile

Thank you! I've just found Asterix on Amazon and will look up Diary of a Wimpy Kid, too. Smile

If she’s a struggling reader could you use this time to help improve her reading? My daughter really struggled to grasp reading so I used a book called Toe by toe. She didn’t register on the Suffolk reading test at all when she was 7.
After a year she was registering at her chronological age. When her teacher commented on her improvement she told him “ it just snapped” 😂 ( clicked ) .
Good luck

A lovely engaging book is the secret of platform 13.

My daughter read a lot of Captain underpants . She would read a page and then I’d read a page . What’s she interested in ? I did a lot of googling and we discovered Erin Hunter’s Warrior Cat series .

13 storey treehouse and middle school might be suitable too.

I hope you don’t mind my recommendations, it’s heartbreaking to watch your child struggle to read.

Sorry I don't have any recommendations, but she use coloured overlays for reading to help with her dyslexia?

She might like the Hank Zipzer books by Henry Winkler. They’re a bit like Wimpy Kid but Hank is dyslexic in the books so they could be very relatable for her.

What about Terry Pratchett’s young people books? He’s got a fantastic sense of humour so she might enjoy them.
