Any dentists on here?

Not an aibu but I bought I might get some more traffic.

Always suffered with my wisdom teeth, to coward to have them out. Currently have one poking through the gum, bottom side. Small flap of gum over the top, swelling has reduced greatly, I can brush it and keep it clean with corsodyl and salt water washes. Can't eat on that side and cannot get rid of the taste in my mouth. I believe it's pericoronitis.
My dentist is now closed and the advice is to call 111 which I really Don't want to do under the current circumstances.
Is this something that will clear up by itself or do I need an antibiotic?
Many thanks.

Not a dentist but had 2 wisdom teeth which didn't come through fully & left gum partway across them. Unfortunately judging by mine paracetamol, corsodyl & saltwater is all you'll be able to do. Unless you have clove oil to numb it with incase you bite down that side.

It does sound like you are going to need antibiotics but maybe a dentist will be along soon to correct me

Hi OP.

Pericoronitis normally doesn't need antibiotics. It happens because you get food/plaque stuck under the flap of gum. You need to get a syringe if you can (any kind - like a medicine syringe from a pharmacy) and squirt corsodyl under the flap of gum. Do this regularly to keep it clean

If it's getting worse and you really are keeping it clean then you might need antibiotics. These should be able to be prescribed remotely so you shouldn't need to see anyone but the pharmacist.

But I would try local measures first. Corsodyl gel is also good, you can rub that on the area and leave it.

there is another thread - basically there is NO dentistry at all in the UK at the moment except advice and antibiotics. The dentists, it seems, have been told they will be struck off they practice. There are going to be urgent treatment centres but they aren't there at the moment.

I hope it can be sorted by the measures above. Everyone -do your very best to look after your teeth.

I can't get a dentist in normal times here so am about to restart mouthguard and hope...

Call your dentist anyway as they will have more advice and may write a prescription. I had prescription anti-biotics twice then the dentist told me i must get them out as I can’t get more anti biotics.

It wasn’t the best week of my life but I survived. Get them out, I haven’t had pericoronitis since and they healed up really well. I got an infection on one side after the extraction and that was treated fast. Honestly it was ok and not as bad as expected the only issues I had was feeling like my teeth were moving, which they were slightly due to more space and an ache occasionally in my jaw as my bone had been chipped away. All manageable and less sore than pericoronitis.

Thank you for your replies. Managed to speak to an emergency dentist, who said to continue what I was doing and it didn't sound like I needed an antibiotic at the moment.
