Expensive groceries; I’m looking at you Ocado

AIBU, my grocery shop is usually around £100 a week. Just amending my Ocado shop and its come to £140. There are absolutely no offers on whatsoever. None. Everything is full price, no 2 for £3 offers, no discounts nothing! Does anybody else think they are taking advantage? They must be raking it in as a lot of stuff is also out of stock!

Are other supermarkets similar or do they still have offers on? I haven’t been to an actual supermarket in around 3 weeks.

Morrison’s has normal offers on today, maybe not as many as usual but definitely some.

BunnytheBee · 30/03/2020 22:07

Maybe they’re just not trying to encourage shoppers to spend more.

They don’t need to increase demand or encourage impulse buys right now.

Gemma2019 · 30/03/2020 22:09

The supermarkets have all stopped the multi buy offers since they put a limit on the number of items people can buy.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 30/03/2020 22:10

I thought all supermarkets had stopped multi buys, discount offers. It’s so the stock goes further after the panic buying episode

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 30/03/2020 22:10

This is a second thread on this tonight. Just a different shop.

I read an article few years ago about how we are so used to offers and sales, we don't even consider them that. It's just a normal price in the minds of many.

Gemma2019 · 30/03/2020 22:10

Be prepared that your £140 shop will probably arrive as a £40 shop with most of the good stuff missing!

TotesGodsWill · 30/03/2020 22:11

A lot have stopped multi buy offers To try and stop people buying extra for the sake of it.

TWD89 · 30/03/2020 22:11

Tesco still have a few on but about 90% have gone.

YABU, they’re trying to discourage bulk buying!

Thehop · 30/03/2020 22:12

They’re removing multi buys since they introduced a maximum item allowance at Tesco

strawberrylipgloss · 30/03/2020 22:15

It's irresponsible to have multi buy offers when people buying too much is an issue. Most supermarkets are not doing multi buys atm

RogueV · 31/03/2020 09:31

This doesn’t make sense though. They can still have multi buys/promotions and restrict the quantity people buy surely?

They are taking advantage. Watch their profits soar.

The Coop isn’t doing it’s members offers. Usually get 75p off their wine (only one bottle) it’s a single use offer.
I’ve just checked Sainsbury’s Nectar and they don’t have their points offers at the minute either.

LoudBatPerson · 31/03/2020 09:41

Every single 3for2 or buy 2 for £x offer encourages people to buy more than they actually need.

If someone only needed 1 or 2 items they buy more than they actually need because of the offer.

This leaves less products to go around.

I support the removal of these offers.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 31/03/2020 09:44

Definitely prices up and offers down. I'm really hot on pricing and they've put prices up. In Sainsbury's the other day 6 cans of 7up were on offer for £3 down from £3.50. They're usually £3 and when on offer £2.50. Tesco is inexplicably out of stock on virtually all their own brand food so you're forced to buy branded thing at greater cost. I regret not stocking up in January and February - I'd have saved myself time, effort, having to go out and a lot of money!!

Wotsitsarecheesy · 31/03/2020 09:44

I've just amended my ocado order for next week. There were still multibuy offers for me. What has annoyed me are the substitutions in the order due today. Several things replaced by items half the size yet more expensive. Or the same size but double the price. It's ok matching the discount, as they do, but I'm not spending nearly £30 on a bag of dishwasher tablets!

LoudBatPerson · 31/03/2020 09:45

However there are certainly still lots of offers on Ocado, I just logged in to check.

Expensive groceries; I’m looking at you Ocado
avrilpoissons · 31/03/2020 09:51

You can reject the substitution and have it taken off your bill can't you ?

Wotsitsarecheesy · 31/03/2020 10:06

Yes, and I am rejecting some of them, but then I don't have the item at all. As I can't now go out to the shops instead the choice is pay up or go without. It's just frustrating when they replace good value items with poor value items.

TheRealHousewife · 31/03/2020 10:08

What would make a refreshing change would be if Ocado and others had single item offers. So instead of 3 4 2, reduce the price proportionally for single items.

They won’t do it though.

ThePants999 · 31/03/2020 10:09

I'm pissed off at this profiteering. Dropping the multi-buy offers to discourage bulk buying was fine, but they should have dropped prices a bit to make up for it.

NemophilistRebel · 31/03/2020 10:10

Waitrose has a note on their website saying offers are generally off to put off multi buys and to help with ensuring there is enough to go around

NemophilistRebel · 31/03/2020 10:11

Problem with this is it’s made a noticeable difference to my weekly food shop budget so I will be for the foreseeable moving away from Waitrose (I can’t get Ocado for love nor money) and need to buy from Aldi or Morrison’s to make up the difference.
Sainsbury’s is no cheaper and there isn’t a Morrison’s nearby.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 31/03/2020 10:11

If you know that prices went up for no reason (not just cancelled offers) then report it.

Runnerduck34 · 31/03/2020 10:31

I saw on tescos website they are stopping multibuys to stop bulk buying and make stock go further, what they could do is average the price of items that were on multi buy offers so you get a slight discount by just buying one. wish they would just do this all the time anyway and just give an honest price in the first place rather than encourage multi buys.

NormaLouiseBates · 31/03/2020 10:35

The prices, whether high or low, won't make any difference to the sort of people who would buy 20 packets of pasta or 10 packs of loo roll.

Anyway, they've put limits on many items now so you physically can't order too many, so that makes the "they're trying to discourage bulk buying" reasoning make absolutely no sense.

My shopping bill has gone up by around 25-30% and it's worrying as I can't afford that ongoing but then I can't shop anywhere else as no-one else has any slots!
