More is it (not me) being unreasonable

I think most of us are affected financially by this virus. Some more than others. My son started a new job on 9th March. As a result his job is safe, but no work currently so not being paid. But the rule on 80% furlough only applies to those in their job before 28th February. He can't claim universal credit as officially he is still employed.

I wonder how many others this has affected due to starting work 1st March onwards. I think the Government are unreasonable with this, but maybe it isn't.

That seems quite unfair, but I suppose they have to draw a line somewhere, and could argue on 28th Feb it was quite clear the virus was heading our way.

Martin Lewis suggested that in a case like your DS, it might be worth asking previous employer (if there was one) to technically take him back onto the payroll, then Furlough him.

He did ask his previous employer, he had been with them 2 years, but they said no ☹

Oh that's a sham user. I did think that some employers wouldn't when Martin Lewis said it.

Shame, not sham.

What kind of contract does he have? Is it zero hours?

hardboiledeggs · 30/03/2020 19:18

The government are encouraging businesses to extent employment of those who have just left to allow them to get the 80% furlough. Not sure if he can take it further though. Seems like it is the employers discretion

user1482956724 · 30/03/2020 19:20

40 hour contract.

Op your voting might confuse people as I would have said you anbu that it is unfair but you have done it the other way around, so your voting might not be reflective.

Its extremely difficult and I would be absolutely screwed in that situation (single parent, mortgage etc).

It’s very sad but the government cannot possibly think of every single case. Loads of self employed people have missed out, staff been let go without furlough (thinking Gordon Ramsey!) and companies going into administration... many more will follow.

Best thing is to focus on what you do have, not what you don’t. I hope that is your health and the health of the family
