To be worried my child has corona virus?

On Saturday night DS complained of feeling hot. He had iced water and didn't mention it again. Yesterday, when he got dressed we noticed he had come up in hives. He has a pre existing peanut allergy and was tested for other allergies but nothing else was found. He had definitely not had any peanuts and had only had marmite on toast and a ginger nut biscuit to eat. We gave him Piriton and the rash did not really go down but with honey cream as well, it stopped itching. This morning the rash has gotten worse and covers his torso front and back slightly puffy skin. He has a slightly runny nose which he has had on and off for a week but hasn't been unwell. Has been quite touchy but given the situation we didn't think much of it. Temperature is normal. Eating as normal. We had a roast yesterday and rice pudding. No peanuts anywhere in the ingredients or listings of items pre made (stuffing only). We did go out in the car yesterday to take items to my mother who is stuck inside but he stayed in the car. However, it is a new car which we collected two weeks ago. We have been inside other than that with only my DH going out for shopping trips etc infrequently (twice a week to capture missing items). My DS and I have not been out aside from this. Am I being unreasonable to worry that this is a symptom of corona virus, and what should I do if the hives don't go away despite giving piriton?

Where have you read that hives are a symptom of coronavirus?

Ohtherewearethen · 30/03/2020 09:10

He hasn't got a fever, cough, or difficulty breathing (well-known symptoms of Corona virus)?

GinDrinker00 · 30/03/2020 09:11

Hives isn’t a symptom of coronavirus.

AgentJohnson · 30/03/2020 09:13

The symptoms don’t appear to correlate with Corona and It probably is something else. However, if the symptoms persist you should try and contact your GP.

Hives are common with viruses in children (something I learned only recently!). My son came up in hives for several days before coming down with a nasty virus a couple of months ago. Obviously that doesn't mean its coronavirus though, so many of the buggers out there! As long as the piriton is controlling the hives, I probably wouldn't worry - but definitely keep an eye on him.

medwench · 30/03/2020 09:24

I havent read that they are a symptom but the runny nose and temp on Saturday could have been. Also, more symptoms are appearing as time goes by (d and v is now known to be a symptom where it was not previously) and the disease isn't well documented in children as they generally have milder reactions.

They've said a runny nose is not a symptom.

SlipSlidin · 30/03/2020 09:28

It doesn’t sound anything like Covid19, other viruses are available 😉in all sincerity I hope your son is ok and feels better soon x

medwench · 30/03/2020 09:28

Thanks for your replies so far. I do know what the common symptoms are but as mentioned plenty of symptoms are uncommon and they are all so generic I can't dismiss them. He has only ever had one allergic episode where it was clearly linked to something he ate so this just came from nowhere hence the concern.

Ohtherewearethen · 30/03/2020 09:29

If Corona virus wasn't around at the moment what would you think it could be? I can't understand why you think it's corona when he isn't displaying any of the known symptoms.

Stefoscope · 30/03/2020 09:29

Have you changed laundry detergent, soap, bubble bath etc recently? Doesn't sound like CV but may be another illness doing the rounds or allergy.

itsgettingweird · 30/03/2020 09:32

Pollen count has been high this weekend with sun and rain.
Maybe that?

I agree to ring GP though and get telephone consult. Hives isn't something to sit and wait about with when there is severe allergy known as well.

itsgettingweird · 30/03/2020 09:33

Also I found cetirizine once a day over a period of a week better for my ds when he had hives rather than piriton (chlorophenamine)

FrankRattlesnake · 30/03/2020 10:04

I’m certainly not medically trained so I can’t diagnose, but my daughter 3 does have the symptoms and we are currently in quarantine.

We called 111 because she is under 5 but if you child is older than 5 you can use the online COVID-19 nhs 111 checker. 111 were very helpful.

Our lo initially had a runny nose/cold, then developed a cough, squits and now has a fever that is consistently just above 40. We have been in quarantine since Friday. She is clearly quite poorly although still active during the day. I fully expect to get it and am terrified as I have asthma, and if her symptoms are mild it is a worry.

Whilst hives are not a typical symptom of COVID-19 information is coming out everyday and updating what the medical profession knows. It’s unlikely that it is (IMO) but if you are concerned get checked out, whether that be 111 online or a phone appointment with your gp.

myfav · 30/03/2020 10:44

I was under the impression that a runny nose wasn't associated with covid 19. Sounds like he has had a mild dose of some other virus and come up in a viral rash.

medwench · 30/03/2020 10:58

Thanks for your reassurance guys. He has never come up in a rash with any illness prior to this. Symptoms of a runny nose have been indicated in children and previous high temperature made me nervous. Thanks for advice especially those who sought to reassure x

Runny nose can be a symptom. My friend with lab tested CV had a runny nose and no temperature.

Hives are a common immune response to viruses in children and not a worry in themselves - none of us can tell you if it's CV or another virus.

medwench · 30/03/2020 12:13

Thank you Callimanco and FrankRattlesnake for making me feel I'm not a total idiot for worrying. Consensus seems to be wait and see so that's what I will do. Services are too busy to trouble the GP at the moment anyway.

My son has food allergies including peanut. He has on occasion come out in hives when he is sick. Like you I knew he hadn't consumed the foods he is allergic to, it seemed to be just an immune response to his illness. He sometimes developed "viral induced wheeze" and along with the hives it looked like an allergic reaction but was just symptoms of a mild illness.

goldpartyhat · 30/03/2020 13:14

As it's so infectious, if you and family get similar or any symptoms in the next few days, that will give you your answer. Cousins daughter had symptoms, which were similar to many in her school, 3 days later rest of the family had similar symptoms. If you all live together I don't think it's avoidable.

SpokeTooSoon · 29/04/2020 21:16

My DC came out in a very sudden and very noticeable hives rash on their neck and shoulders and upper torso yesterday. A dose of piriton and it vanished in an hour.

Same thing happened this evening - really large raised patched and red all over, very itchy. Awful to look at. Again Piriton cleared it up in no time.

I’m now reading this can be a precursor to Covid. Rapid onset and disappearance of hives for several days before fever kicks in.

Anyone else heard this or experienced the same?

Cremebrule · 29/04/2020 21:21

Back in March, my little one had a fever of 40, respiratory issues and a rash. She was never tested for Covid although we had an A&E trip so we’ll never know. It could have just been any other virus. Her sister had a cough but she always has a cough and no-one else showed any symptoms.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 29/04/2020 21:24

Yes. There have been articles that children are presenting with erythema multiform/Kawasaki's syndrome as a response to CV.
As for runny nose/watery eyes, I had them last Monday and tested positive. DW's symptoms were vomiting and extreme fatigue/ drowsiness. No temp, no coughing.
