*Traffic Posting* Child hit head and worried :(

My daughter fell over earlier and hit her head on a stone in the middle of a gravel path on our one walk a day.

It’s a small cut but looked deep but very small, however given the situation in the hospitals at the moment I thought it would be better to patch her up at home.

I gave it a thorough clean, applied some butterfly stitches and covered it with a dressing. She had no concussion and after 20 min or so was happy as Larry again.

However it’s now gone midnight and I’m typically having intense “mum guilt/worry”

Have I done enough or should I of taken her for ONE stitch it’s that small? Just worried as it’s on her face and don’t want her to have a scar by her eye Sad

I think she will be fine. But if I’m doubt then take her to the hospital tomorrow for a check up

CtrlU · 30/03/2020 00:40

Even if the wound is stitched or left to heal naturally - it will probably leave a scar, if it’s going to leave a scar.

playthestation · 30/03/2020 00:42

I wouldn't even have considered taking mine to be seen for that tbh. I would have been concerned about the bump to the head more than the small wound. Assuming she had been her usual self since if she were mine I would assume fine.

Not a doctor. Personal thoughts. Seek advice if you are unsure.

Isadora2007 · 30/03/2020 00:43

I think what you’ve done is spot on. Can you take another photo tomorrow?

WorraLiberty · 30/03/2020 00:44

Aww bless her.

If there's no sign of concussion, I wouldn't have taken her to hospital anyway.

Just change the dressing tomorrow and have another peek but she should be fine I think.

In my (un-trained) opinion, I think they would only have done butterfly stitches on that anyway...it doesn't look big enough for a stitch.

DS3 (2) jumped off the sofa late last year and landed, bare foot, on an upturned plug. One of the spokes went right into the arch of his foot, about a quarter of the way - enough that it stuck and had to be pulled out. It left a gaping hole and there was a LOT of blood.

I was convinced they'd stitch it but after much umming and ahhing (and poking-back-in of straggling bits of flesh and fat that were hanging out of the wound whilst he screamed) they did butterfly stitches instead. It healed beautifully within a few days.

I think you've done the right thing op - just keep a close eye like you would with any head bump but I think it's unlikely to need treatment.

Honestly, if it was someone else’s child I’d probably feel 100% confident in my decision it’s just when it’s mine I feel all anxious and sad for her, I need to get a grip.

It’s come up in an (small) egg shaped lump, more like a marble, so I’m hoping when swelling goes down it’ll knit back together nicely. She’s sleeping peacefully and can be woken up so don’t think it’s concussion.

I’ll check again in the morning and post another picture too, thank you for the reassurance. Flowers

@CeriseClementine that sounds horrible, glad he was okay Shock

How old is she OP?

Kids do tend to heal fast and if there is a scar, there's no saying it'll be lifelong.

Even some chickenpox scars can look nasty for a year or so and then disappear.

@WorraLiberty She’s just turned 4, thank you.

Actually feel a little bit ridiculous now I’ve posted this so it was just middle of the night anxiety probably Blush

Fingers crossed it’s looking a bit better tomorrow, it was just the missing skin in the middle bit that was a concern.

It's not ridiculous to second guess yourself, especially at this time of night when you're tired and not to mention everything else going on!

I'm sure it'll look a bit better tomorrow and the main thing is that the swelling goes down.

Try to get a good night's sleep and please update in the morning Thanks

31weeksgone · 30/03/2020 11:32

It looks a lot better today, where the swelling has gone down the gap isn’t that big in the middle anymore, healing nicely. Thanks everyone for my irrational midnight worries, it’s a trying time BlushFlowers
