Is my employer breaking the law re lock down

The industry I work in is classed as key worker; but I would say that the operations side is more key. The admin/finance jobs, although it would be slightly inconvenient, could be wfh really; but our employer wants us in the office while Boris says we should wfh wherever possible!
There aren't many of us. We're following hygiene re cleaning of desks, keyboards, door handles etc & we're observing personal space. Non of us are vulnerable & we trust each other to follow the rules outside of work. Two of us have husbands who also work in key industries, so there is a risk. We haven't even been given a letter to carry with us in case we get stopped by the police. Does this sound right? are they breaking the law ir just downright uncaring?

Downright uncaring and breaking law.
If you can WFH then that’s what you should be doing.
Where is your laptop?
If at work, why don’t you collect it tomorrow then go home?

What exactly do you do OP?

No they're not breaking the law if you can't work from home and you should do your bit to help.

Oly4 · 29/03/2020 22:31

If you can work from home then you should raise it with then again.

Same with my employer. The industry is considered to be key workers but there is no reason for us working in the administration to be in the office. All our work in computer based. The employer however has made a statement that they did no need for anyhting out of the ordinary. Thankfully our manager is letting us work from home.

You can report to HSE if you feel your employer is not behaving as they should.

Contact details on their website.

I work for a similar key organisation, and office-based. My role could hypothetically be carried out from home, but it would be a complete nuisance, and very impractical for various reasons, including issues with high-level network security. So I'm still going in, we are sitting a long way apart, and cleaning everything in sight every day. They have given me a letter to produce if necessary as well.

I work in communications. My partner does too doing the same thing but for a different company. He can work from home and is doing but my company (some 3000 strong) say they don't know how they'd support us at home.

Both of us key workers, I am vulnerable, probably wouldn't get furlough because my company could afford to keep me but the chances are they probably won't be willing to pay.

Where does it say that OP has a laptop?
