Off licences are allowed to remain open during stricter lockdown because responsible drinkers were entitled to have a drink

This has been deemed essential.

Ridiculous.

'Also it's not about the items being bought as such but if you are stopped by police who want to know if your trip is essential. I don't think going to the offy will come under the allowed outings'???

These are corner shops. Bread, milk, sometimes even toilet paper. And yes, a load of booze.

Crazycrazylady · 29/03/2020 16:59

I totally think this was the correct decision. For many people these days, their only luxury is a beer on a Friday night after a stressful week , working, homeschooling or just isolating. They shouldn't have to brave the mania at the multiples just to get a six pack.
Most off licences are small stores with one or two customers at a time

easyandy101 · 29/03/2020 17:18

When you're looking from compliance from your populace you let them get shitfaced

You have to be really fucking stupid not to see that

CorianderLord · 29/03/2020 17:21

I mean they sell food, loo roll, cleaning products, newspapers as well as alcohol...

KenDodd · 29/03/2020 17:32

Why would the existence of people who are alcoholics who can stop without danger mean there aren't alcoholics who can't?

I think you must have missed when I said this -

I only knew of one person this wasn't recommend for and was told it was be dangerous to just stop. He was a man in his 60s with multiple other health conditions and had been a homeless alcoholic for 40 years.

I was disputing the ridiculous claims about 9% of the population would need hospital treatment if the alcohol supply ended.

VegetableMunge · 29/03/2020 17:38

Can you tell me which post did claim 9%? I had a quick scan but the nearest I could see was someone saying 9% of males were chemically dependent, and 3% of females. I may however have missed one so it would be useful if you could point me to the time.

NameChangeNugget · 29/03/2020 17:41

Ridiculous post OP.

Most off licence shops sell other groceries

lilmishap · 29/03/2020 17:43

@easyandy101 That was my thinking too.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 29/03/2020 18:37

@KenDodd I can assure you many will experience what I described - it's sadly how my dad passed away Sad he was in his 50's and had been an alcoholic for the best part of three decades though. I'm sure much younger people would handle cold turkey better. either way the statin only the NHS is not what we need right now.

MitziK · 29/03/2020 18:42

Are we going back to not believing experts again, @KenDodd?

The source was NHS Statistics on Alcohol: England, 2015. Available at: www.hscic.gov.uk/catalogue/PUB17712

Now, you might not believe that acute alcohol withdrawal is a thing. You might believe that withdrawals don't cause damage. You might not believe that it's actually a medical emergency. You might believe that the NICE guidelines for handling the medical emergency that acute alcohol withdrawal have been cobbled together on the back of a fag packet.

But that doesn't mean you're right.

Nousernameforme · 30/03/2020 14:21

Off licences actual off licences rather than convenience stores and corner shops with a liquor licence.
These may sell a small range of snacks and soft drinks but it's mostly alcohol. They aren't the sort of place you can get any basics.
This is why I can't get over them being open. People can get alcohol from their local shops or supermarkets anyway
