To take my car for a drive?

Not so see anyone, not to go shopping, not to get out of the car, just to drive around a bit for the sake of the battery?

I thought about doing this but then worried about the chances of breaking down or having an accident that would require nhs or police assistance so didn't but I'm not sure on the rules 😕

Kay1341 · 29/03/2020 13:22

In this weather, your battery won't run out for weeks. Unless your battery is already bad that is.

MissMarks · 29/03/2020 13:28

New restrictions came in to place in NI last night- not sure about the rest of the U.K. you can’t just go for a drive and the police are apparently all over the place stopping people

Morgan12 · 29/03/2020 13:30

I don't think this is actually allowed.

My kids love a drive in the car but we haven't went incase of breakdowns etc.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 29/03/2020 13:38

You’re not allowed to surely? There is a list of reasons that you are allowed to leave the house for. Going for a drive isn’t on it.

Redwoodmaz · 29/03/2020 13:41

What bit about we can and can't do have you not understood???
ALL of it???

We'll be on total lockdown soon - due to people doing things like this.

heartsonacake · 29/03/2020 13:41

Yes, of course YABU. It’s not an essential journey.

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 29/03/2020 13:42

A trip to the supermarket will do.

Pulppixies · 29/03/2020 13:43

I went for a drive yesterday or my battery would’ve went flat. I need to work on Monday. You can’t just leave your car for weeks on end. Mine can’t anyway.

JudgeRindersMinder · 29/03/2020 13:44

I read that as “take my CAT out for a drive” 🙄😂

Apolloanddaphne · 29/03/2020 13:46

My DDs car doesn't like being left sitting for a long while so I sent her to the shop today to pick up a few essential items. Killed two birds with one stone.

LittleBearPad · 29/03/2020 13:47

Drive it the supermarket when you next go. It will be sufficient.

TotesGodsWill · 29/03/2020 13:49

YABU

It’s not an essential journey so don’t do it

Really struggling to see why this is so hard for so many people to grasp!

Pulppixies · 29/03/2020 13:49

I don’t drive to the supermarket, I get online shopping. So I have to take it out and drive it every so often if I haven’t driven it in a while

WTFdidwedo · 29/03/2020 13:49

My battery was flat because a light was left on and I didn't realise so I just jumped it and took it for a drive. It was the most enjoyable drive I can remember as it had been so long! I don't think it's actually allowed though, but I need my car to go to work on Tuesday so essential for me.

SpangledPandemonium · 29/03/2020 13:56

I'm a teacher on rota system with diesel car. The filter chokes up really quickly if I don't do a longer journey every fortnight to blast off the particles. I did have it booked in for a clean up but it was cancelled. If the car breaks down I can't get to work. Apologies for being one of those people but I really don't know if I could extend my journey home from work to clear the filter . I am currently just leaving it but a series of shorter journeys is clogging it up.

Roweeeeena · 29/03/2020 14:00

It hasn't even been a week... you'd leave it longer to go on holiday.

JustStayAtHome · 29/03/2020 14:03

Oh wow!! This is insane!

safariboot · 29/03/2020 14:04

If you know it's necessary then YANBU. Though really it would be a lot better to get a battery charger.

But most cars won't have a problem being left parked for a few days or even a couple of weeks. If it gets to several months that's another matter.

bridgetreilly · 29/03/2020 14:05

Drive it next time you need to go out for shopping/medical needs. Otherwise STAY AT HOME.

bridgetreilly · 29/03/2020 14:07

@SpangledPandemonium, in those circumstances I think you're okay to take it for the longer drive when it needs it. It's the same reason garages are still allowed to be open - so that keyworkers can continue to get to work.

Saddler · 29/03/2020 14:08

Stay at home

SpangledPandemonium · 29/03/2020 14:09

Thanks bridget.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 29/03/2020 14:10

I’m trying to cycle but will my battery die ? Please no

Pulppixies · 29/03/2020 14:11

Me getting to work is essential, I can’t do that if my battery is flat so the drive is essential
