To buy tooth repair stuff off tinternet

So Sod's law I've chipped a tooth now we're on lockdown.
It's at the gumline and I'm annoyed because last time I was at dentist I asked about that area and was concerned it was vulnerable and was fobbed off.

So I'm thinking get the stuff they use off the internet, and a uv torch and try to do a repair at home? Am I mad?
The exposed bit and the ridge of enamel left is freaking me out😬

I'd be worried about it causing more damage to your tooth. Give your dentist a ring and see if you can get a filling done for now.

Duchessofblandings · 28/03/2020 20:17

Ring your dentist, might be infection risk, last thing you need right now.

I used some online dental cement to fix a crown once and four or so years later it’s still in place. Under these conditions I’d definitely try something like it.

However I’m sure a real dentist will come along and be horrified and say you’ll make it worse!

musicposy · 28/03/2020 20:20

Reading the responses, I guess the problem, as others say, would be sealing in decay and causing a bad infection.

Watching with interest as I have a broken tooth too. Had an appointment to get it fixed this week, but they cancelled for weeks.

sequinednostrils · 28/03/2020 20:37

I can't get to dentist, they are only taking emergencies and Im not in pain, I can't get out ( lone parent with asd child)
Just as a temporary measure during lockdown .

No, you can't do this yourself. It has to be cleaned properly. The last thing you want whilst you're on lockdown is to develop an infection or an abscess.

Call your dentist and let them know what's happened. If they won't see you ask for their advice on what to do to keep it clean and safe until they will see you.

Procrastination4 · 28/03/2020 20:51

Please just call your dentist.

Bakingbaking · 28/03/2020 20:55

İ broke mine in half yesterday. They said no appointments to be given for at least 3 weeks but probably longer. She said keep it clean. Swish warm salt water and take pain killers when necessary if an infection develops they can give antibiotics prescription over the phone. I've been waiting for a root canal and crown on that tooth for months but he instead on doing other work first. İ now can't afford the treatment so will probably have to have it removed.... İ know how you feel. İ only have half a tooth now

Bakingbaking · 28/03/2020 20:58

You won't get an appointment op. But please don't fix it yourself either it will cause more damage thAn good

Bobbobbo · 28/03/2020 21:08

Dentists have been told to close. They are setting up emergency hubs to treat emergencies but depending on where you are this may not be done yet. But this may likely be only for people in severe pain. Normal dentists cannot treat anyone right now as they are high risk from aerosol sprays with the drills and they do not have appropriate PPE. They can give advice over the phone or prescribe antibiotics and pain relief I believe.

Get something like this www.lloydspharmacy.com/en/dentek-temporary-filling-material-17g. It’s what I’ve been having to advise my patients to do. We don’t use uv lights so a uv torch wouldn’t do much good

Khione · 28/03/2020 21:25

I have

Make sure it is clean, swill with a mild peroxide solution first - and get it sorted as soon as possible. In my view it's not a perfect solution BUT it's the least bad one at the moment as it may be months before things get back to normal - especially as NHS appts were so hard to get even before this

amber763 · 28/03/2020 22:08

I had to do exactly this today.

Bakingbaking · 28/03/2020 22:19

Can you use it the temporary filling in a vertically broken tooth. İ can see decay but the tooth is above the Gum line. Want to stop food going inside

sequinednostrils · 29/03/2020 12:04

Thanks@RobinHumphries , I've ordered the one you suggested.
