To ask for suggestions instead of a walk

I’m really panicky this evening and feel like I’m going to have a panic attack. I’ve already had a long walk this morning with dc and don’t feel it’s right to go for a walk again, especially after reading that people are being reported. A walk would definitely calm me down but I wondered whether you could ether suggest alternatives or at least talk to me until I calm down!
I have propanolol but I’m scared to take it as it can affect your respiratory system I think (too scared to google it!) and there is a lot of covid-19 in my area so I’m worried (just to add my panic attack isn’t coronavirus related). Thank you x

  • Do you have stairs you can walk up and down?
  • Have a bath
  • Read a book, either to yourself or DC
  • Listen to soothing music
  • Phone a friend/relative

If you've had counselling/CBT before for your panic attacks, what calming techniques have they given you? Remember that this isnt life forever more. Its only temporary.

Boopear · 28/03/2020 18:46

An online yoga session?

ItchySeveredFoot · 28/03/2020 18:46

I listen to podcasts. Or one specific one. I always thought they sounded boring but now I'm obsessed. Crochet/knitting is also supposed to calm your mind.

orangejuicer · 28/03/2020 18:47

I would just go for another walk personally.

Staysexyanddontgetmurdered · 28/03/2020 18:49

Go on YouTube for yoga or meditation sessions. Or if it's some active exercise you need, search for something like '20 minute workout fitnessblender '. Fitnessblender have some really good, no equipment workouts. Even better if you have a kettlebell or some other weights.

WestWasnt · 28/03/2020 18:49

I think you should go for another walk too. As long as you’re staying 2m away from anyone else I think that’s fine to have a 2nd walk today.

Oly4 · 28/03/2020 18:50

I would also go for another walk or a cycle!

orangejuicer · 28/03/2020 18:51

I didn't go outside yesterday so you can take my allocation Wink

blaaake · 28/03/2020 18:52

I'd go for another walk if I were you.

Hereforthenamethreads · 28/03/2020 18:52

I would go for another walk. If you are worried about doing that you could try an exercise session on YouTube or put a good film or some of your favourite music on. Hope you are ok.

BackforGood · 28/03/2020 18:54

Look on You Tube for Yoga with Adriene.
She also does meditation, and I noticed one today specifically being to help with anxiety.

june2007 · 28/03/2020 18:57

Keep fit DVD. Do some meditation. Dos some baking. What normally calms you down.

LittleMonstersMummy · 28/03/2020 18:59

I get anxiety from being stuck indoors. I find it great one DC are in bed to put on a podcast and deep clean. It exercises my body and helps my mind by almost feeling sociable but without actually socialising or going out.

Wynston · 28/03/2020 19:03

Op i understand this.....this last week sometimes i just have to open the window just so the walls dont feel like they are closing in.
Personally I think I would just take another walk.
Keep talking to us if you want......

TheGinGenie · 28/03/2020 19:05

I find meditation and mindfulness to be helpful. Or stretching (yoga etc)

Hope you feel better

clarepetal · 28/03/2020 19:07

You poor thing. I've stayed in too, so you can deffo have my allocation. Go for another walk, much love Flowers

moonriverandme · 28/03/2020 19:08

My fitness studio are doing classes online, I find this helps me. Could you do a Joe Wickes class or similar from YouTube. Sometimes, although yoga is calming you need to get rid of the adrenalin with robust exercise.

Saucery · 28/03/2020 19:08

Put some music on and dance. I had a proper Emo shuffle, air guitar, arms waving and spinning round yesterday. Felt loads better.

2004pickle · 28/03/2020 19:08

You’re all so lovely thank you. I’m going to ring a friend and see how I feel. I could possibly go for a quick walk later when dc are in bed and it’s unlikely I’d see anyone round here. The anxiety I have means that I worry obsessively about being judged or doing things wrong so the 2 walks is a big thing for me to be anxious about.
I’m recovering from ptsd but my daily mindfulness and other techniques have gone a bit out of the window as I am now working from home with all my dc schooling at home - not much time for self care. I can barley breath this evening and am committing myself to start my daily self care stuff again tomorrow. Skyping my psychologist on Monday but also speaking to my gp this week. Thanks again Flowers

Have you got a fire stick / netflix? You can get a quick workout if you ask alexa to open joe wicks,

SheldonSaysSo1 · 28/03/2020 19:10

What about your favourite tv show? Ideally something upbeat and with some comic value, it keeps you distracted and is comforting.

2004pickle · 28/03/2020 19:12

Your offers for me to have your walk have actually made me cry. People are so kind Flowers

I like a good murder mystery series!

DarlingCoffee · 28/03/2020 19:25

You can have my walk as I didn’t go out today. Keep wellFlowers

2004pickle · 28/03/2020 19:29

I’m frustrated that I still struggle after a year of treatment. Telling people was the best thing I ever did and I’m loads better but long to feel ‘normal’. Walking has been an absolute life line, especially when I was very depressed during the trauma therapy.
Thanks for listening x
