Possibly a daft question about supermarket shopping.

We usually shop in Lidl, or occasionally Aldi.
So I don't know what is happening in the larger supermarkets.
In those that sell clothes, homewares etc (Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's) are those sections still open, or are you only able to buy food?
Thanks

Sorry, should have posted in chat.

Is Aldi and lidl still selling in their 'central aisle random stuff'? I'm sure they are, same as regular supermarkets are still selling clothes/electricals/bed linen etc etc.

MrsPussinBoots · 28/03/2020 18:42

My local Sainsbury's is still selling clothes, electrical goods etc. Even had some new stock compared to last weekend.

TheQueef · 28/03/2020 18:46

Personally I would try not to whilst people may be queuing outside, unless it was an essential.

supersop60 · 28/03/2020 18:54

Agree with TheQueef
There will be a lot of people queueing outside in the cold while others are fannying about buying t-shirts or whatever.
They probably should shut those areas off as non-essential.

Newforestclub · 28/03/2020 18:56

Thanks. I really need lightbulbs and DS has a huge rip in his coat. I'm hoping the weather means he won't need it for much longer, but he has to get his daily excercise, he has ADHD, so not getting him outside just leads to a nightmare.
I might venture out to asda some time next week.

They seem to be prioritising essentials, so might not have as much stock as usual. But the sections are open for you to buy from.

The Sainsbury's that have an in-store Argos are open as usual too.

BakewellGin1 · 28/03/2020 18:58

They are open but in fairness there was only myself and two other people in that area (I needed Vests for DS I wasn't just

Ethelfleda · 28/03/2020 18:59

Went to M&S today and the whole store was closed apart from the food hall.

Wandering

Fatted · 28/03/2020 18:59

Our local Asda is huge. It's still selling clothes, DVDs, TVs and all of the other non essentials as usual.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/03/2020 19:01

Somethings like light bulbs, or clothes for growing kids have to be bought somewhere (not everyone can or wants to do online and delivery companies are stretched) so perhaps best if it can all be done in one place.

Get a grip. They have about 3 aisles of pretty average clothes. All the other physical clothes shops are closed, with online following suit. Clothes can be a bloody necessity and people can browse the range in Asda, etc if they bloody well like.

What about babies that have or will outgrow their clothes while the pandemic goes on? Pregnant women who gradually get bigger and no longer fit into their current clothes? People who have got a new temp job and thus need a different 'uniform' to go in? Those who work in high risk jobs who want to buy extras so they can wash their clothes every time they come in the door? Those who got caught up self isolating somewhere where they perhaps only had a few things with them?

Are they supposed to just walk around naked? Hmm

I fail to see the difference between a mum going to the baby section and grabbing a packet of babygros quickly, as opposed to someone who's elderly and takes their time walking around the store, or a mum with 5 kids who no one can mind for her causing her to take longer on her shop.

Literally stop trying to police every bloody activity people do.

George Asda is delivering to your house

SwerfandTurf · 28/03/2020 19:32

Are there times when there are no queues? At my local big Tesco there was a 45 minute queue to get inside in the morning, but no queue at all and hardly anyone inside during the evening.

browzingss · 28/03/2020 19:34

Not necessarily.

Albeit I haven’t visited that many shops since lockdown. The shops that I have visited either locked all other floors so only the food hall floor was accessible (M&S) or cordoned off the clothing/homeware areas on the same floor (Sainsbury’s). Both stores left a selection of basic homeware basic clothing (underwear) near the cordoned area.

thebear1 · 28/03/2020 19:35

I was in Sainsbury's for my one weekly shop and had a quick look at clothes and got ds a small Lego set in the toys. I was pleasantly surprised that area was open as I had thought it might be closed off. The amount of time I spent was probably no different to the amount many people spend choosing wine or toiletries. Neither of which I did.

EggysMom · 28/03/2020 19:36

B&M have some mad decree from their head office that they have to close the children's clothes and children's toys sections. They can however sell dog toys (because those are in the pet department), Easter toys (seasonal aisle) and garden toys (gardening department). Meanwhile other stores such as Asda and Home Bargains are happy to sell their full range.

browzingss · 28/03/2020 19:39

I think you’d certainly be able to get lightbulbs, but doubtful that there would be a selection of children’s coats at all. When I went to M&S they had underwear, socks, tights etc available but I can’t remember seeing any actual clothing.

BanginChoons · 28/03/2020 19:45

I have been wondering this too. I am starting a new job in a few weeks and need to wear smart clothes. I went through what I have today, and barely anything fits. I'm not sure what I will do.

RB68 · 28/03/2020 19:51

They are open - yes people are waiting outside but so were you its your turn if you need pants and bras or a couple of t shirts for warmer weather go for it.

Some people live on very few clothes out of necessity so don't have a vast wardrobe. I bought DD some crop top underwear the other day.

I also noticed a massive sale rail with really reduce prices but didn't need anything so didn't bother

niffynoonoo · 28/03/2020 19:52

our sainsburys clothes was open. I must admit since the 1 in 1 out queing I do tend to get in, shop, get out. I`m not hanging about as I want to limit being near people.

slipperywhensparticus · 28/03/2020 19:53

Order from asda online click and collect or get it delivered

Blackcountryexile · 28/03/2020 19:54

When I went to Sainsburys yesterday the clothes racks were all pushed together. As we entered the shop there were greeters watching to see where you were going. After I'd done some shopping I went to pick up a newspaper in that area and was politely asked where I was going. If you wanted something specific I would have thought it was worth asking.

niffynoonoo · 28/03/2020 19:55

People still need clothes or a kettle if an old one doesnt work etc. I think for now its a good to keep them open. The ranges arn`t that big and many just want to get what they need and just go home!
