To go out with a cough, sore throat and runny nose?

JustCantShakeIt · 28/03/2020 12:05

The cough I’ve had for nearly two months. It’s intermittent but can go on for a while and knowing my luck will start in the queue for the supermarket!

The runny nose and sore throat is due to sinusitis from said flu like illness two months ago.

I need to get food in today. Don’t want to send teenagers as worried they’ll forget about touching stuff, social distancing.

I am well in myself.

AIBU?

"Teens are a bit stoopid as well"

As in can't pick up stuff that's on a list & contact to ask re a replacement if stuff isn't there?

The official advice is that coughs can continue for a while after an illness and are unlikely to be contagious after 7 days. That is why if you self isolate for 7 days and still have a fever or feel unwell at the end, you need to continue isolating until you feel better, but if you still have a cough you don't need to. So I think it's fine for you to go out if you have to provided all precautions are taken (don't go near people, avoid touching too many surfaces etc).

YANBU.
I have hay fever already. I was still coughing occasionally yesterday when really it should be gone. Took hay fever medication this morning and no more coughing. Your cough is long term. Not everyone can just stop coughing.

londonrach · 28/03/2020 12:49

What @slartibarti says. How old are your teens can you send them or do you have a friend who can shop for you. Sounds even if you havent got it you at great risk of severe one as you already got a cough so not worth the risk. I say that having seeing my healthy aged 40 husband fight and win against this disease. He had three days when he wasnt sure if he see the next day. Kept him home so his fight is an unknown in figures. Ive another week of isolation and friends who have been amazing getting milk etc and leaving on doorstep.

LittleLittleLittle · 28/03/2020 12:50

OP if you don't make your teens step up they will always be useless.

Mlou32 · 28/03/2020 12:54

They are teenagers. Do they have special needs or learning difficulties that would prevent them from following the rules?

callmeadoctor · 28/03/2020 12:55

Just give your teens a shopping list, if they struggle (!!!!!!!) they can ring u for advice or send a pic, whatever

callmeadoctor · 28/03/2020 12:55

Blimey, teenagers went to war once!!!!!!!

TheReluctantCountess · 28/03/2020 12:57

I think that @slartibarti makes a very good point.

lljkk · 28/03/2020 12:57

There was a bloke with cystic fibrosis recovering from confirmed cv19 interviewed on radio. Thing is, he always has a cough. Having a cough is his normal. So he's got immunity, is the least dangerous person around for transmitting cv19, but he can't help but cough. I bet his life is somewhat amusing right now.

DisneyPlus · 28/03/2020 12:58

Hmm depends how old they are?

Tartyflette · 28/03/2020 13:00

Have you got any 'Tunes' or other throat sweets? I'm in a similar position with a tickly cough that I've had for weeks following a bad cold and i feel very self conscious about it at the moment.
But i find sucking a sweet or chewing something damps the tickle right down.

adaline · 28/03/2020 13:02

Teens are more than capable of doing a full shop. I had to do the weekly shop for my mum when she broke her foot. I was about fifteen or so and my dad was working away.

It was absolutely fine and I somehow managed fine. Send them with a list and a budget.

Zombiemum1946 · 28/03/2020 13:05

30 mins before you go out, sinus wash out, 30mins after wash out use nasal spray if you have it. Take bottle of water with you, take a sip every time you feel the cough coming on, or drip at the back of your throat. That way you reduce what's in your sinus, and dry up any runny nose. The water helps to wash any irritant down so you swallow it rather than it irritate your throat therefore cough. Reducing the irritation reduces sensitivity in the throat and the reflex to cough.

HoffiCoffi13 · 28/03/2020 13:14

I’ve had a cough for a month. I’ve been in self isolation for over 2 weeks due to said cough.
I’m taking the dog for a walk today. There’s no way I’ve caught coronavirus in the past 16 days as none of us have been anywhere or seen anyone.

MintyMabel · 28/03/2020 13:15

If you know it’s not the virus then go. But PLEASE when you are coughing, do it right into your elbow and not all over the place as one woman did last time I was in Tesco. You know it’s not the virus but I don’t, and now I’m convinced I’ll get it.

Queenoftheashes · 28/03/2020 13:16

shopping is not difficult compared to an awful lot of secondary school work
Just give them a list and get them to call you if they need to discuss a sub

Omashu · 28/03/2020 13:26

OP I know of someone who is in intensive care with corona virus right now. She had a cough for a while and then obviously didn’t realise that she had a ‘new’ cough. She’s potentially infected my sister who is high risk and in turn me and my family.

I wouldn’t strongly recommend against going out if I where you!

Gogogohaze95 · 28/03/2020 13:29

YABU
Send your kids to go and get the shopping

Forza14 · 28/03/2020 13:33

No.

You have a cough which means that you’re expelling mucus and saliva. You may have COVID & not know it on top of your regular cough.

Get a teenager to go.

Forza14 · 28/03/2020 13:37

I have hay fever already. I was still coughing occasionally yesterday when really it should be gone. Took hay fever medication this morning and no more coughing. Your cough is long term. Not everyone can just stop coughing

No, not everyone can just “stop coughing”. But coughing people are far, far more likely to spread the virus (if they have it - and who of us knows for sure?) than someone cough free.

Incredibly irresponsible “advice”. Think.

FamilyOfAliens · 28/03/2020 13:41

DS is no longer a teenager (21) but he went out today and bought the shopping as he’s off self-isolation and DH and I still have another week.

If they can work out how to illegally stream films and videos, I’m sure they can pick up a week’s worth of shopping without too much trouble.

category12 · 28/03/2020 13:41

A teenager can cope with a shopping list and a shop, fgs. Stop babying them.

GabsAlot · 28/03/2020 13:54

wear the mask then you0 can stop other people picking up a bug

UnaCorda · 28/03/2020 14:01

Surely studying for, say, eight GCSEs is more complicated that carrying out a supermarket shop, and teenagers are expected to do that.
