No time limit on outdoors exercise?

FFSFFSFFS · 28/03/2020 08:54

I thought that it was a limit on being outside for exercise of one hour - but the bbc website is saying no time limit?

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-51176409

Did I make up the one hour thing???

No time limit but I’ve been irritated by people going to extremes. I’m on strava and I still see friends going on 40 mile bike rides. Not wise for all sorts of reasons and we may well be heading towards further restrictions because of it.

Sindragosan · 28/03/2020 09:52

Again, its about being sensible. Are you in a built up area and will struggle to avoid people? Shortish times are sensible. Arse end of nowhere with no-one around? Do what you like. Somewhere in between? Try for a quiet time of day/quieter area.

Growingboys · 28/03/2020 09:53

He didn't say there was a time limit but for some reason people have been saying an hour. Not the case right now at least.

GreyhoundzRool · 28/03/2020 09:55

I don’t think there’s a time limit but my neighbours were out for 4 hours on their bikes yesterday. That’s taking the piss in my view

BogRollBOGOF · 28/03/2020 10:04

I'm running as usual. I did a half marathon 5 weeks ago, so a 7 mile rural loop from my front door is my kind of normal, and once out of my neighbourhood I saw less people than I would on 5k looping through my neighbourhood. It is my normal to spend 1-2 hours running a few times per week, and at the moment, it's valuable headspace from trying to homeschool two DCs one of which has ASD, dyslexia and dyspraxia (and cannot afford months off learining routines in several ways)

Any locals touching the stile or gate are more likely to catch the virus from the same supermarkets that we use. It's not a honeypot and while I have actually seen other runners this week, it is still very, very quiet and easy to distance.

Some MNers seem to want a fast-track to martial law and are getting very frothy with people breaking invisible rules and guidence that do not exist in the UK, and are frankly behaving like my children do during a game of monopoly, inventing rules and getting stropy because someone else landed on Mayfair first Grin

15 minutes slow walk is not exercise to my body; it won't get my heartrate high enough to register in any cardio zones. Being fit, it takes more time and intensity to maintain that fitness. If I'm going to go down with a respiritory infection, I want to keep my lung capacity good and my body healthy!

I'm keeping my distance, it's near a fortnight since I did anything social, I am following the rules and guidence given, but I will save hard lock down only for the time if/when the government says it is required because physical health and mental health are important too.

Growingboys · 28/03/2020 10:10

Well said Bogroll. I'm a runner too and the deputy CMO said we should all be using this time to get fit so our bodies are strong to beat the virus.

As long as you keep your distance etc etc when running then there's not a problem.

Katinski · 28/03/2020 10:20

"getting stroppy because someone else landed on Mayfair first" - Bogroll, I love you! thank you for the laughGrinGrinGrin

MsVestibule · 28/03/2020 10:24

I honestly thought Boris said that in his 'address to the nation' too!!! I've just rewatched it on YouTube but no, he doesn't. Unless it's been cleverly edited since to make us all feel as though we are going mad 🤔.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 28/03/2020 10:27

You can go out ONCE a day to exercise as in run, walk or cycle but Boris didn’t give a time limit.

Obviously it’s better if you aren’t out too long as you do risk coming in to contact with people

RarePackOfLooRoll · 28/03/2020 10:28

I had the feeling Boris said an hour too!

We're all losing the plot and it's only been a few days!

pingbloodyping · 28/03/2020 10:29

You made that up! We went for a 3 hour walk the other day, 1.5hours there and back - no-one in sight. If it had been busy with people we would have cut it short/changed route but it wasn't so we enjoyed the exercise and fresh air while we had the chance.

Janaih · 28/03/2020 10:29

No time limit but be reasonable. If you're going out for hours you are a bell end.

adaline · 28/03/2020 10:31

Why is it taking the piss? DH cycled from home up the nearest fell and back down yesterday. He was gone four hours or so and didn't see a soul apart from lorries on the road. I don't see why he shouldn't be able to continue doing so while he can?

He has an indoor bike he'll use when we get stuck in proper lockdown but for now I think it's important to get out while you can. If Boris had wanted to impose a time limit then he would have done.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 28/03/2020 10:31

DD and I walked to the beach yesterday, intended just to go for a 30 minute stroll but there wasn't a soul in sight so we spent a lovely 2 hours hunting for sea glass. We didn't touch anything other than the sand and the only person we saw was someone walking their dog about 100 m away.

Surely it's a common sense thing, you'll be more at risk walking through a busy city or town so those people will probably go out for a shorter time. Those of us fortunate enough to live within walking distance of beaches, woodlands, fields can be out longer, adjusting our length of time depending on however many people are out and about perhaps adjust the route to avoid climbing over stiles etc. Do not go to places you are not familiar with so as to avoid needing rescuing by mountain rescue etc.

adaline · 28/03/2020 10:31

If you're going out for hours you are a bell end

Why? Confused

Neverenoughcoffee · 28/03/2020 10:35

You can go out more than once per day. There is no time limit. Read the actual legislation, then think carefully about whether for your circumstances your decisions are sensible and considerate.

dogsdinnerlady · 28/03/2020 11:05

We live about 2km from a huge forest and 500 yards from the village open space. We walk for 2 hours a day (sometimes twice) with the dog in the forest and never encounter a soul. If we go to the local park there are dozens of other people doing the same. Common sense to avoid others. Every situation is different and people need to use their common sense (another commodity which seems to be scarce ATM).

cologne4711 · 28/03/2020 11:10

Where are all these gates people are so worried about? If I go for a run or walk I don't touch anything. If I needed to cross a road I'd press the button with my elbow (but more likely just wait for a gap in the traffic).

I agree an hour is a reasonable guideline but it's not actually in the UK guidance.

cologne4711 · 28/03/2020 11:13

15 minutes slow walk is not exercise to my body it's not enough for anyone. People walk SOOOOO slowly. If you want the exercise to do any good you need to raise your heartrate a bit. 30 mins brisk walk three times a week is usually good enough but given we're not getting any other sort of exercise at the moment I would suggest it every day.

planetcloud · 28/03/2020 11:17

I thought it was an hour as well - is this mass hallucination?

MereDintofPandiculation · 28/03/2020 11:22

Cripes 90% of people think I'm BU to ask if I misunderstood a rule. I think they're just using the buttons to mean YABU - you misunderstood, YANBU - you got it right. They're not saying you're BU

Round here people seem to think you have to take a slow walk 15 mins from your house and back again or they look at you like you’re the worst person in the world. I saw the comment re a couple of brothers "you're allowed out for exercise, not kicking a football around". Hmm

MereDintofPandiculation · 28/03/2020 11:27

If you're going out for hours you are a bell end I'd have thought, if you can do it without metting other people, going out for a long while was more likely to keep your lungs healthy and in good condition to fight off CV, therefore reducing the load on the NHS. Shouldn't we all have a responsibility to keep ourselves in as good condition as possible?

Sockwomble · 28/03/2020 11:27

1 hour is enough for most people. I also think 2 30 mins when there is no one about is better for social distancing than 1 hour in the middle of the day.
The cycling in groups is becoming an issue where I live and I think there will be a crack down on that.

Puffalicious · 28/03/2020 11:28

It's definitely been stated on the news. Nicola Sturgeon definitely said it - one hour.

Nicola Sturgeon doesn't make English law, though.
