Lighthearted!
Dd gets free school meals.
Because of this, we are entitled to a voucher.
All good so far. Extra money. Choose which supermarket you prefer.
Voucher comes as a text .
Decent amount of money too!
But you are not allowed to use it on line!
You have to take it in to a store.
Now, I am definitely pleased to have it. And it has a long expiration date, so I can use it when (if?) Lockdown ends. But others might need that money now?

Ahhh yes, those poor people. They’ll swap anything for drugs won’t they Hmm
Are you also concerned about people receiving 80% of their wages spending that on drugs?

Mlou32 · 28/03/2020 12:36

The government can't cover everything. They have done good in even providing this to people.

Purpletigers · 28/03/2020 12:42

I think you’re very fortunate tbh and I’m sure the people in your area will be able to sort something out . People are much more resourceful than you think . I guarantee they’ll find a way .

Purpletigers · 28/03/2020 12:43

In NI people are receiving the money straight into their bank account on a fortnightly basis .

Nixen · 28/03/2020 12:44

The absolute greed of some people astounds me. If you don’t like the (very kind and generous) offer then you could always feed your own kids

Cherryade8 · 28/03/2020 12:45

You are a grown up and have been given free vouchers very kindly, which I understand you appreciate. However, there are people losing their livelihoods who would love to receive free money, so I dont think your post is very sensitive. I'm a single mum and work full time, please dont assume we all get free vouchers, your OP seems to suggest single mums automatically cant support themselves and their children, plenty do.

Homemadearmy · 28/03/2020 12:54

Hear they are doing good parcels for the families that get free school meals. They have to be collected but volunteers are dropping them of to people that can't collect

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 28/03/2020 19:45

I dont need it because I stock piled for brexit and also fer high rate dla for ds

But yeah I feel for those people around me who have to go to b&m with their child every week putting themselves at more risk to spend £11 .

MitziK · 28/03/2020 20:08

@PardonWhat Huh? Of course there will be addicts prioritising spending their reduced wages on drugs and/or alcohol as well. But that's already in their bank accounts and isn't being paid by voucher, so doesn't have the same characteristics that mean a voucher/code does - a £30 voucher will end up being sold for probably no more than a tenner if the purchaser feels generous, because the seller will want/need cash more.

£30 cash or a voucher that has to spent in store by the legal owner, whilst it might not get spent on what it was intended for, is still £30 that could be spent all on food (or part food and part fix if it's cash), rather than £10 cash for the family member, no food + a happy scumbag with a voucher to sell on or buy goods with.

It's the reason why I think vouchers would be an atrocious way of paying benefits - because desperate people selling codes would be a whole new sideline for scumbags - and I think the Tories who support the idea are playing right into criminals' hands when they espouse the theory.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 28/03/2020 20:40

My Tesco ones can be spent by anyone. I just transfer the code

My b&m ones are a letter that came through the post that I need to take in I'D to spend

pippishortsocks · 28/03/2020 20:53

The government can't cover everything. They have done good in even providing this to people.

At the moment it's not the government who have put this in place, the schools have done this themselves as there is not yet any government system in place, that's why it's different around the country as schools have sorted it out amongst the million and one other things they have had to sort out.

Dieu · 28/03/2020 21:00

I don't understand what you're asking.
Is it that you're wondering if you should be getting it at all, given that you are able to feed your child at home, and don't need to use the voucher for now?

Dieu · 28/03/2020 21:01

Oh my, are you complaining that you actually have to take it into store?
Nanny state right enough!

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 28/03/2020 22:00

Well it's not great for my 40 year old friend who is on lock down with 2 small children and who has terminal cancer is it @Dieu the op wasn't talking about herself

Peanut55 · 28/03/2020 22:11

Our lives have dramatically changed. It will not be the same as it was before. We need to adapt.

If someone had to get to a shop , if that was the only way their child would be fed, trust me, you'd get there or find a way.
