For taking money of my bathroom fitter

I’ve had a bathroom fitted and he’s made a good job. The flooring isn’t level though and I’m not sure if that’s something that should be level.

He’s ruined my vanity though. He’s used silicon but used a “spreader tool” and it’s gone all around the vanity. As a result it looks constantly wet. The vanity is made from Teak wood and he thought I would be using oil. As far as I know Teak doesn’t require oil and it’s detrimental.

The floor looks ok but there are double the gaps between some tiles, so it looks a bit bad. The plumber also told me he found wood rot, which could be true as there were holes and he wanted me to replace the whole wooden floor planks. I saw the floor and it was fine. There may have been a leak and removing all the planks wouldn’t do much, stoping whatever was making the floor wet would. So I feel like he couldn’t do the floor properly due to his experience and as a result I’ve suffered.

He also took 6 bloody weeks. Blamed it on the bath being difficult (it’s a Omnitub) etc. Also he’s done stuff like my front porch has some tiles that are wobbly and he tried to fix them (I didn’t ask him to or give permission). He also came on a Saturday without asking if it’s ok, just told me, plus he was at my house most nights until 6/7. I’m single woman so I didn’t set the boundaries and I don’t know what time he arrived but he did say he wasn’t a morning person.

So if I dock his pay am I a bad person?

Oh he also said the tiles were hard to lay as they were octagon. Not sure if that’s true or not.

I would be having a discussion about payment. Be clear with what you think is a reasonable cost to fix the issues then deduct that amount.

Manchestermanchester · 27/03/2020 13:46

Well the whole thing needs replaced

I didn't follow half of this.

Manchestermanchester · 27/03/2020 14:18

@luc1nda sorry

OP, if you give him full payment, you will kicking yourself in a few weeks time.

I think you need to give him a list of things to fix within a fixed timeframe (e.g. 2 weeks) and tell him that if he downer fix then you will withhold the remaining money to pay someone to fix the bad work.

DON’T GIVE HIM ALL THE MONEY.

I’ve been through this twice, you will hate yourself for paying in full for shoddy work.

annamie · 27/03/2020 14:22

@Luc1nda

I didn't follow half of this

I think that’s your issue, not OP’s. I understood it all.

Manchestermanchester · 27/03/2020 21:25

@annamie thanks.

No payment til issues are fixed. Be brave. Point out the issues, tell him they need resolving before payment is made. The whole thing sounds like a shambles, OP.

We had a tiler start to do the bathroom, noticed the tiles were at odd angles and stopped him. He said the walls needed plastering first and couldn’t tell me why he hadn’t told me this first. (Second tiler said he could have adjusted the adhesive etc to resolve issue after we’d plastered!)

Manchestermanchester · 27/03/2020 22:40

The vanity is ruined. He wants to use methylated spirits, which I’m not going to let him. It will mess us the wood.

OP posts:
Manchestermanchester · 27/03/2020 22:40

It’s not a shambles, it could be a lot worse. The flooring is already done, so I’m not sure what else I can do :/

iano · 27/03/2020 22:47

Don't pay the full amount. The floor not being level can be an issue. We had this in our bathroom and the angle was minimal so it took us a few days to notice. the loo was at a slight angle and started leaking as a result. The tiler did the whole thing again no moaning.

TattiePants · 27/03/2020 23:09

I remember your previous thread when you were planning your bathroom, it’s such a shame that it hasn’t been done right. I would give him a list of the things you are unhappy with and ask him how he will rectify them. Don’t pay him anything until you are happy with the job. Also, make sure you’ve taken lots of pictures of anything you’re unhappy with.

Did you get the Tikamoon unit? If so, you can sand the wood although it would then need to be varnished/oiled to stop water marks.

MiniCooperLover · 27/03/2020 23:12

OP with the amount of shoddy work he has done I genuinely can't understand why you feel bad? Tell him to fix the bad work and you'll pay but not before.

Manchestermanchester · 27/03/2020 23:15

@TattiePants hello! Yes I got it an I think it’s a mistake as I’ll wash my hands and the water goes everywhere :( and obviously gets on top of the vanity. Any ideas? Did you use oil?

OP posts:
Merryoldgoat · 27/03/2020 23:17

6 weeks?!

How on earth is that possible?

Manchestermanchester · 27/03/2020 23:20

@MiniCooperLover I hate confrontation. The wall tiles are fine, it’s just the floor - and most of the time I think perhaps I’m in the wrong.

OP posts:
Manchestermanchester · 27/03/2020 23:21

@iano yes the floor isn’t level. Will he blame this on me though? Say it’s due to not getting new floor boards?

I think this corona virus has me worried about life and obviously him putting money in the table. But god 5.5 weeks (I kicked him out) it was just too much.

OP posts:
Manchestermanchester · 27/03/2020 23:23

@Merryoldgoat dunno. Once I came home and his wife was in the bathroom (with him). I was a bit annoyed about that as well (looking back).

OP posts:
TattiePants · 27/03/2020 23:37

We used a clear varnish to seal it and the water just wipes off or dries without leaving a mark. I only got round to putting one coat on - 3 years later and the varnish is still sitting at the back of the unit waiting for the second coat! I’ll check tomorrow what we used.

Manchestermanchester · 27/03/2020 23:49

@tattie thank you. I wasn’t sure if I was allowed to use varnish as google said not to. Did you varnish the whole of the cabinet? I’m a bit disappointed with the wood as it feels a bit rough/basic/don’t know how to explain. Most likely I’m not used to non Ikea wood lol!

OP posts:
Redglitter · 27/03/2020 23:55

I’ve had a bathroom fitted and he’s made a good job

The rest of your post indicates it's anything but a good job

Manchestermanchester · 28/03/2020 00:02

@redglitter compared to the bathroom that was there before.... the wall tiling is good. Everything else looks level and good. The silicone is good. It’s just the flooring and the vanity that he messed up. Yes it could be a whole lot worse....

OP posts:
Manchestermanchester · 28/03/2020 00:05

And the home owner before me she had a new bathroom put in, tiling was rubbish and she uses god awful tiles. She was 30 years old but choose some beige/grey ones.
