What would you do about June holiday?

Emcont · 27/03/2020 08:49

Myself, DH and two primary aged children are booked to go to Majorca on the 22nd of June for 2 weeks.

I'm fully expecting the holiday to be cancelled anyway due to the current situation, but on the off chance that it isn't, would you still go or postpone until next year?

I'm anxious that even if we are able to go, things would be 'weird'? Like the atmosphere will be strained, people will be understandably still anxious etc.

We can cancel at any time and not lose money.

What would you do?

YABU - GO
YANBU - REBOOK

I wouldn’t worry about making a decision just now, theres no point agonising over it when the choice is likely to be taken out of your hands anyway.

maslinpan · 27/03/2020 08:55

I love your optimism, but I don't think there's any chance of you getting a choice about this! Nothing is going to be back to normal by June.

Sirzy · 27/03/2020 08:56

I doubt you will be able to go but I would wait until closer to the time and then take it from there

DazedandConcerned · 27/03/2020 08:57

I have a holiday to Egypt - multi centre - booked for 15 May. It is likely to be cancelled, but if it isn't I'm going to go.

The people need the vital tourism and my husband and I are, very thankfully, low risk of becoming Coronavirus fatalities. Additionally, I believe we have already had it, which further eases my concerns with travel.

Only you can say if the risks outweigh the loss of money if the holiday isn't cancelled. Holiday companies are intending to start operating again on 1 May, but I'm not holding my breath.

BubblesBuddy · 27/03/2020 08:57

Well at least you won’t be paying the fine for taking them out of school!

Emcont · 27/03/2020 08:59

Every cloud and all that @bubblesbuddy Grin

@DazedandConcerned How can you go if only essential travel is being allowed? Confused!

Swiftier · 27/03/2020 09:00

BA just cancelled my holiday that was booked for early June, I would think there’s a good change yours will be cancelled too if you can afford to wait and see for a few weeks.
If it’s not cancelled I’d wait until next year anyway - if restrictions are lifted I’d guess this may be in stages so for example you might be able to travel there but find lots of places are still closed etc.

TimeAintNothing · 27/03/2020 09:02

A term time holiday doesn't automatically mean a fine, it depends on the child's overall attendance and whether the absence for the holiday is authorised. Our LA only issue fines if an unauthorised absence takes a child's overall attendance below 94%, they don't fine at all if its authorised.

OP, I'd play it by ear and see what happens over the next few weeks. We have a holiday booked for the same dates and I'm going to see what the situation is like at the end if April/beginning of May before deciding. We have told the DC that if we do have to cancel then we can put the money aside and rebook once things settle down.

MonsterChopz · 27/03/2020 09:03

Even if things had improved here by June I think it's unlikely that Spain would be in a position to accept tourists. They have been absolutely ravaged by this. I'd expect it to be cancelled but even if it wasn't I'd be looking at rebooking for the following year.

Sirzy · 27/03/2020 09:04

Most companies are also asking people to only get in touch if they are due to travel in the next 2 weeks anyway

I8toys · 27/03/2020 09:05

We have Bucharest in May half term (as it was) - waiting until a few days before to rebook or cancel

PardonWhat · 27/03/2020 09:07

I’m in a similar situation. I’m just waiting and seeing. What else can we do?

DazedandConcerned · 27/03/2020 09:09

@Seventyone72seventy3 If you read my post, I stated that I didn't expect to go. But, holiday companies are taking bookings from 1 May. My holiday is for 15 May. They have more of an idea of when they will be likely to operate than you or I do.

Again, I will state, I do NOT expect to be going. But if I can, I will. If I can't, I'll change my flights and bookings to July or August, and cross my fingers again.

MumW · 27/03/2020 09:10

We cancelled ours for August as we just could not see it happening.. We could get our deposit back so long as we cancelled before June but decided to cancel now in case the broker went bust.
I don't think there is much chance of travel restrictions being lifted by June.

Emcont · 27/03/2020 09:11

I'm being optimistic for my childrens sake as they're 4 and 6yo and they're understandably having a really hard time understanding everything going on. We had a break to Haven cancelled that we were supposed to be going on today which they took pretty well!

I know bigger things are going on right now and feel silly even worrying about this!

Ponoka7 · 27/03/2020 09:11

It's threads like this that makes a mockery of posters getting hysterical about someone rural taking an extra walk.

As for Egypt, any journalist presenting data to show that the official figures aren't quite showing the full story, is quickly shut up.

Ponoka7 · 27/03/2020 09:21

OP, do you think that the virus is going to disappear? If it's still around and you get infected on the plane, do you want to be in Majorca if you do get symptoms?

They are in the same position that we are in regards to the overstretched health system. So you might as well start living life normally now and get infected here.

@Seventyone72seventy3, we aren't closing our borders, so once the holiday companies decide they need to make money, rather than not spread the virus, globally again. We will be flying around the world again.

Patel asked BJ to close our borders to non EEU countries, especially hot spots and he's refused. We don't have to worry so much about EEU members because they are taking a sensible approach.
Places like Mexico and Belarus are ignoring the CV.

Emcont · 27/03/2020 09:22

@ponoka7 We're all worrying about something!

OP posts:
Emcont · 27/03/2020 09:23

No, I don't think it will disappear..

We were going to the US in September for my big birthday. However I have not booked ,and am now cautiously looking to May/June of next year. Dont forget if there is no vaccine, there is a chance of becoming ill when there and no one wants to be locked in a hotel room for 2 weeks! I would cancel and think about rebooking in the new year .

mynameiscalypso · 27/03/2020 09:28

We have a holiday booked in June to France, I'm anticipating we won't be able to go then but might be able to go later in the summer. I think restrictions will ease a bit, especially as we head into summer.

earlydaysblue · 27/03/2020 09:34

To the poster saying they think they have already got the virus so they will be low risk and still intend to go on their holiday...
You do realise that if you go you will require the services of airport staff, retail staff, transport staff, hotel receptionists, housekeepers, waiters and cleaners...

That's a lot of people catering to your holiday needs. But oh no, it's ok because you are low risk.

Some people still don't get it

rookiemere · 27/03/2020 09:46

If it were me I'd cancel now if you genuinely won't lose money. For summer if the restrictions have eased I'd book a UK holiday - for you perhaps the Haven place you were meant to go to in Easter - and save the foreign trip for next year when hopefully all this will be behind us.

DazedandConcerned · 27/03/2020 09:49

@earlydaysblue I'm sorry, but my statement I'd already had it was connected to the concept of risk of going on holiday IF AND ONLY IF the government allows it.

I expect that they KNOW what is best for people in relation to this pandemic. I apologise that my making an informed medical decision offends you so much.

And as for your nasty "some people still don't get it" comment. Shove it. I've been isolating long before the government forced us to do so. I haven't been out of my house all week. I support my key worker NHS father - who brought the bug home which I think was Coronavirus. I lived through a SARS epidemic working in medicine, trust me I get it.

I just can't lose the money I've put down on my holiday when I am low risk. IF we are allowed to go we will be going. IF travel is operating, all those individuals you mentioned will STILL be working whether I'm there or not. Jesus some people are massively judgemental.
