Petition for NHS staff no tax?

alloutoffucks · 26/03/2020 20:02

A friend has sent me a link to a petition asking me to sign it asking that all NHS staff should not pay tax during this crisis. I totally support the staff and know they are doing a difficult job, but I don't support this. I would be fine with staff getting a bonus. But paying no tax would benefit the most well paid most. So a well paid top manager or consultant would benefit far more than a HCP or cleaner. So I haven't signed the petition. So what do you think?

YABU - You should sign the petition
YANBU - You should not sign the petition

What about other frontline essential key workers? Police, fire, supermarket staff, teachers? All risking their health to keep everything going. And you’re right about the top paid benefitting most.

alloutoffucks · 26/03/2020 20:17

Yes good point.

Nah, I'm pretty sure the government could do with some tax revenue right now.

adaline · 26/03/2020 20:26

No, stupid idea. We need tax more than ever right now!

Worriedmum54321 · 26/03/2020 20:35

No but they should get paid extra for longer hours and compensation for those who have to live away from home

vinoelle · 26/03/2020 20:41

im NHS and i don't even think this is a really good idea...sounds like a gimmick to me and it would never happen anyway

WineAndTiramisu · 26/03/2020 20:42

I'm an NHS worker and think this is ridiculous. Would benefit the highest paid proportionally more, which is unfair

Racoonworld · 26/03/2020 20:48

No way, the country needs as much tax as it can get right now! I agree they should get paid some overtime hours or a small bonus at the end of it however

DanielRicciardosSmile · 26/03/2020 20:49

Where does this person think money for the NHS comes from?

madroid · 26/03/2020 20:50

They are putting their lives on the line FFS I think it deserves a bit more than some overtime or a small bonus.

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 26/03/2020 21:45

@madroid as are the people who are keeping supermarkets open who see thousands of people a day. As are the police or the fire service, who risk their lives all the time not just during a pandemic.

All of the key workers are in it together, please don't forget!

edwinbear · 26/03/2020 21:50

We’re going to be bankrupt as a country in 12 months we can’t afford it.

I expect most of them would prefer some decent PPE anyway.

Confuzzlediddled · 26/03/2020 21:52

I work in waste water and some of my colleagues are risking thier lives every day, having to go into people's homes to remove Sewage, unable to maintain 2m distance from the person they are in a cab with etc, they deserve a bonus and recognition just as much!

user1511042793 · 26/03/2020 21:54

I’m nhs. I’m not asking for a tax break. I’m asking you all to STAY HOME Please and thankyouGrin

roarfeckingroar · 26/03/2020 21:56

Ridiculous - how do they think the NHS is funded?!

nocoolnamesleft · 26/03/2020 21:58

Decent PPE so people aren't risking their lives so much would be better. If there is a tax break, aim it at the lower paid NHS/care workers.

(NHS consultant)

SudokuQueen · 26/03/2020 22:00

I want them to get some reward for the work they have done. The front line ones only of course, nurses, doctors, carers, dentists, police officers, etc. The higher ups don't need it.

Dunno what though. A tax break wouldn't work well for the country. I would like them to get a payrise, a decent one. Not just some pissy 3%. But again, would we be able to afford it? Probably if we deduct 30% from the higher ups..

Monstercruch · 26/03/2020 22:01

Terrible idea.

Ffsnosexallowed · 26/03/2020 22:02

As an NHS worker, that is ridiculous. The thank yous are enough.

saraclara · 26/03/2020 22:02

They are putting their lives on the line FFS I think it deserves a bit more than some overtime or a small bonus.

Only a small percentage of NHS workers are on the front line with coronavirus victims.

MelbaToast · 26/03/2020 22:03

Definitely not. Having a secure job to go to is more than most people have at the moment.

Noconceptofnormal · 26/03/2020 22:03

Really, no. There are millions of people working for the NHS, very few of them are directly working with covid patients on the front line.

At the end of the day there are a lot of managers, admin etc people who are on decent salaries, good pensions, 100 percent secure jobs, with sick pay etc working 9-5 in a safe environment.

Why should they get a tax break just because they work for the nhs when people in the gig economy are being laid off right now?

I wouldn't have a problem with doctors and nurses working directly with covid patients to get a bonus at the end of this to say thank you.

But this virus is already bankrupting the country, let's not stupidly sign petitions fof things thst will make the situation even worse.

alloutoffucks · 26/03/2020 22:05

If it was a petition about PPE I would be signing and sharing it widely.

@Confuzzlediddled That sounds risky. And yes these initiatives always reward those most visible rather than others equally crucial but doing risky work.

OP posts:
MelbaToast · 26/03/2020 22:06

I agree about the other key workers. In my job we don't have any barriers between children and staff except for the usual wash your hands crap and I'm sure this is the same for supermarket workers, police and other key workers

CalleighDoodle · 26/03/2020 22:08

No youre right. People in the public sector who are key workers should get paid properly instead.

Tonights clap really annoyed me. Not becUse i dont think we should appreciate the NHS, but because it is massively underfunded and under resourced. That was deliberate. People dont need a clap. They need a decent standard of living.
