To think that some tasks set by schools are just ludicrous?

I give you "create an A3, double sided, printed booklet" to be handed in on return to school. Firstly do most people routinely keep reams of A3 paper in the home? And do most people have printers that do double sided printing on A3 size paper in the home? I'm worn out with it. We've done nothing but school work all day, every day this week. The whole house revolves around it. I don't think I can bear it for however many months this will take Sad

Hi - as a teacher I am happy if the students are doing some of the tasks to a reasonable standard.
I am totally flexible in terms of whether it’s in books, on paper or typed.
Please don’t worry about specific instructions. X

ChloeDecker · 26/03/2020 19:15

Like this one OP. You even say yourself on it to just relax and it doesn’t matter, just do what you can. So it was a little disappointing to read that you started this thread, not with a ‘Help, any ideas for this project when you don’t have a printer or A3 paper?’ but another dig/swipe at schools and teachers just trying to do their best at the moment too.

Glad to read you’ve got a way forward though. I very much appreciated everyone is finding this all stressful but I do wish there were fewer threads like this at the moment.

IsisCam · 26/03/2020 19:16

Yes it is unreasonable. The teacher didn’t think it through.

By the way, if it’s too much just don’t do school work. You aren’t school. These assignments are rough guidelines, not something you are expected to finish.

I am doing stuff I can do best with my kids, like teaching them to help around the house, playing instruments, playing tennis and things connected to my specialty. Not planning my day around watching phonics videos and doing generic daft craft projects and “ideas” from some “educational” site I was sent by the school.

YgritteSnow · 26/03/2020 19:18

@Dinoctoblock I know what you're saying. Honestly though if I was one of your students parents you would love me. I am so low maintenance and never contact school unless theres absolutely no other way to manage a situation. However would you set an A3 double sided, printed booklet as a task to be done at home? The thing is if we could get out of the house this would actually be done as I would do it all on A4 and then jog down to Ryman's - just at the end of my road as it happens, and get it enlarged.

I wonder if the teacher meant for an A3 piece of paper to be folded into a leaflet, we use to do that in school, you did some folding and cut some slits and then the children wrote/drew the information to make a booklet. That would work with A4 as well, then it's on each side and you don't have to worry about printing.

Darbs76 · 26/03/2020 19:19

My daughter has to create a mask (not COVID) but the example is this gold decorated mask. Like where are we supposed to get the materials! Seriously

EnglishRose1320 · 26/03/2020 19:24

Just seen it says printed, no idea what the teacher wants but I think any version of a booklet that has information relating to the topic will be fine. Teachers had to write these ideas up quickly, a few that were set for my son won't really work in our house, others have been fine, we are doing a mix of the school learning and some of our own choices as well.

YgritteSnow · 26/03/2020 19:27

than a couple of hours a day. Think about it, in between lunch times, assemblies, moving to classes etc, how much work do they actually do? You just need to keep them ticking over. Are the learning via a school platform? Home Ed does not have to be School At Home. Don't put so much pressure on yourself."

This is what I posted @ChloeDecker and anyone else who is interested. I was supporting a stressed out poster. You said I was criticising teachers on multiple threads. You made it sound as though I was making a habit out of doing so and had started yet another thread to carry on doing so when it's clear I have done no such thing and now you're not even gracious enough to retract it. You obviously had to go off and do a full scale advanced search to find even that! GrinThanks for vindicating me with that link though, I guess, even though it wouldn't have been necessary if you hadn't fibbed in the first place.

I think dd and I are just going to have to be more flexible - hard for her though. And try to remember as @BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz said it's highly unlikely all work will be gone over with a fine tooth comb. Just been a stressful day all in all. Still glad I posted despite the few snarky posts. It's helped me relax about it a bit and I will try to pass that down to dd Smile

Please contact the teacher. The teachers are conference calling with each other to discuss strategies and problems. Your input will be welcomed. It would make it a lot easier for them to structure the online learning tailored for your dc.

grafittiartist · 26/03/2020 19:44

Masks- you can use anything!
Baking foil would make a a lovely surface. Buttons? Old fabric? Wrapping paper?
Use a paper plate as a background.
Sorry- I enjoy tasks like that!

Another school bashing thread - what a shocker

Have you read it?

OP posts:
donquixotedelamancha · 26/03/2020 19:53

Do you think they meant A5 rather than A3?

I would assume that too.

vegansprinkle · 26/03/2020 19:54

I'm a teacher, and what I am learning is that you can't please everyone. All of my students have different needs, and while I can manage it all in class, my work (and stress levels) have gone through the roof trying to make sure everything is in a way that is sensible and comprehensible for all of the parents as well.

Do what you can. If you struggle, contact your teacher.

Or whInge online.

YgritteSnow · 26/03/2020 19:56

I'm a single parent of two autistic kids one of whom left school at age 8 as he couldn't manage there and ended up being injured due to his needs being unable to be managed.

Where else can I whinge if not on line? Grin

@YgritteSnow read what chloe said again. She didn’t say you had been slagging off teachers on other threads, she said you had been on other threads which were slagging off teachers, ie so you knew you weren’t the first such poster. Anyway I agree with others that a3 must be a mistake for a5 and that if you’re still worried you should email the teacher for clarification.

Beebie2 · 26/03/2020 20:03

Just contact the teacher. They’ll probably have more clarification than anyone on here, especially if you want specifics.

I wouldn’t worry about their workload, it’s what they’re expecting. Especially for children with SEN - their learning is different and often bespoke - producing 4+ weeks of work for huge numbers of kids in 2 days was insane - some kids won’t have received the bespoke clarity they usually get. It’s not unreasonable - it was a crazy couple of days. We hand delivered a huge number, due to how many kids were absent.

It was bizarre, unknown and worrying. At the same time we were creating provision for an unknown number of pupils, for an unknown amount of time, during a global pandemic.

It’s not unreasonable that every activity set didn’t meet the usual standard of delivery. Many of us used learning packs - not because we wanted to, but because it was efficient.

What is unreasonable, is going on a forum before you’ve asked for any clarity or adjustments for your child, and simply calling the task ‘ludicrous’ painting teachers in the same crap light as usual.

We’re humans not wizards.

Dinoctoblock · 26/03/2020 20:08

@YgritteSnow No I totally agree with you, the A3 booklet sounds mad! I wasn’t trying to justify what your teacher is doing. I was just feeling my dread about all of my parents next week who will be going WFT is she asking us to do that for?! When I think what I’ve set is normal. It’s an impossible situation. Massive printed booklets aside. Grin

LynetteScavo · 26/03/2020 20:38

Don't do it then.

We've done very little school work this week because we've had a huge amount going on and have had to adjust. We'll get there. Just not today. It was only this afternoon I got the printer to connect to my pc.

ChloeDecker · 26/03/2020 20:46

aupresdemonarbre Thank you, that’s exactly what I meant. In both posts. That thread I linked was also only 4 down on my watch list.

I do however, completely understand how you took my posts in your way OP and I’m sorry for that. My main point was that I was a little sad it was you, (who is usually understanding of the ‘madness’ at the moment), that had posted what seemed like (and to others as well in fairness) another school/teacher bashing thread on the work being set/provided by teachers.

I hope tomorrow is less stressful for you OP.

Sendallthegin · 26/03/2020 20:46

What age is your dc and what subject is this for?

It sounds like part of the task is being able to set up the file to print in a specific way.

Maybe they can do the work, save the digital file with settings all in place and print at school upon return.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 26/03/2020 20:48

I would guess typo.

QuillBill · 26/03/2020 20:51

I’d eat a Lindt bunny for the gold paper.

FrippEnos · 26/03/2020 20:51

FFS, this one isn't even about the work but the format.
