Would this be CF of me

I’m having to work from home. Last night my internet went down. BT advised it’s a network issue and it’ll be down for 48 hours at least... Would I be unreasonable to ask my neighbour if I could have their WiFi password in exchange for contributing to the cost of the bill?
I’ve looked at pay as you go mobile dongles and they are all on 12 month contract or expensive upfront.
The 4g in my house isn’t good enough to use my phone as a hotspot I tried today and it cut out constantly, which my boss was nice about as a one off but might not be so accommodating if it goes on for a week...
If your neighbour asked would you mind?

Generally it’s not something I’d do - as the WiFi owner I’d be responsible for anything you did online, including illegal activity.

Can’t you tether to your phone?

TerrorWig · 26/03/2020 18:22

OP literally said she tried that Hermione.

I think this is something your employer is going to have to suck up. It’s a risk they take when you’re allowed to work from home.

YANBU to ask your neighbour but ask with the assumption they’ll say no.

Leaannb · 26/03/2020 18:23

No way in the world would I share my wi-fi password

JKScot4 · 26/03/2020 18:24

I would let you, wifi passwords are easy changed.

ShellsAndSunrises · 26/03/2020 18:24

If I knew my neighbour well, I might. But I’d probably not, under any circumstances. I’d be liable for your activity, and I’d worry about speeds, as DP & I are working from home too.

Friendsofmine · 26/03/2020 18:25

I wouldn't be impressed if we didn't know each other and you asked me. However I assume you have their number and could ask without risking their health in going to the door?

Personally in these current times I would say no. Everyone has enough to worry about without having to change the password in 48 hours because they gave it to you.

TheReluctantCountess · 26/03/2020 18:25

Yeah I think that would make you a CF.

karala · 26/03/2020 18:27

I would be more than happy to help a neighbour under the current circumstances and then I'd change my password once they were sorted out

donquixotedelamancha · 26/03/2020 18:27

Our neighbours did this for us when we lost internet for a week or so. I would have no hesitation doing the same for them. Depends on how well you get on with them.

helgahelga · 26/03/2020 18:28

@lastqueenofscotland Ask. It can't hurt.

I would say yes, but not if you had never give me the time of day before.

If you get on and have spoken before yes.... you are OK to ask.

But if you have never said more than 2 or 3 words to your neighbour... then you are a CF sorry.

Jupiters · 26/03/2020 18:28

Do you know your neighbours?
If you're friends you can give our a go. If you don't know them then it would be cheeky.
I don't have a good relationship with my neighbours (due to their noise unfortunately) so if they asked I'd say no.

user1497787065 · 26/03/2020 18:28

If I knew you reasonably well as my neighbour I would without hesitation.
If you knocked on my door, introduced yourself and asked I probably wouldn't agree.

lastqueenofscotland · 26/03/2020 18:28

I do get on with them fairly well and was going to offer to pay say, a week, of the the bill. But if the consensus is no I’ll battle on!

OP posts:
donquixotedelamancha · 26/03/2020 18:29

Yeah I think that would make you a CF.

Why, the neighbours can say no?

shinyredbus · 26/03/2020 18:30

No sorry I wouldn’t. Cyber security is important. Your work is going to have to understand sorry OP.

helgahelga · 26/03/2020 18:30

@Friendsofmine

Everyone has enough to worry about without having to change the password in 48 hours because they gave it to you.

WOW. Confused How on earth do you get through each day? Serious question.

HollowTalk · 26/03/2020 18:32

I would give it to mine as they're amongst my best friends. I'd also give it to anyone who I thought wouldn't abuse it.

sunshineandshowers21 · 26/03/2020 18:33

last week the daughter of our elderly neighbours knocked on and asked if it would be possible to use our wifi so that they could use an ipad to facetime their children and grandchildren whilst they’re unable to leave the house. i said yes and gave her the password, she was very polite about it and our neighbours really are lovely and i’d hate for them to be even more isolated than they need to be. however i’m not sure if i’d be happy to give my password to someone who would be using it for extended periods of time, especially as our connection tends to lag if there’s too many people using it at once.

Tunnocks34 · 26/03/2020 18:33

I’d agree to my neighbour, but I’d say ‘I’ll change my password in 1 week’ and if stick to it.

It’s not something which would be a massive concern for me. If I can help someone, I will.

hairycabbage · 26/03/2020 18:33

My WiFi has a 'guest' login that I can grant to anyone temporarily. It can be managed from an app too. If I could do this I'd happily share with a neighbour

yellowfishes · 26/03/2020 18:35

I'd certainly ask.

No I wouldn’t let you me and dh are downloading things and video calling lots and dd is watching Netflix and Disney+ more than normal. If you where is using it to download or stream it would slow it down to much.

NothingIsWrong · 26/03/2020 18:45

I wouldn't but only because DH and myself are both trying to work from home and we don't have enough bandwidth for us, let alone to share.

Bread999 · 26/03/2020 18:48

If you're using BT then you can access their BT FON network. Search for the WiFi: 'BT WIFI with FON: and sign in using your account details for free WiFi. Every BT router uses a small amount if it's broadband to create a free network of WiFi for bt customers.
