Hello, can anybody please help with this problem? I have the correct answer (I think- another student just posted it), but I cannot see how they arrived at it. It's driving us crazy!

I have to step away from the screen for about 30-40 minutes so thank you in advance :)

It's "just" a logic problem. You need to work through all the statements and how they link together.

Eg 4. Says Duke's snowman has a flower. 2. Says the snowman with the blue scarf has earmuffs. Therefore Duke's snowman can't have the blue scarf.

CornishYarg · 26/03/2020 18:20

Haven't gone through it all but point 1 tells you that red scarf has one more button than Daisy, who has one more button than carrot nose. So red scarf, Daisy and carrot nose are all different snow people. And red scarf can't have 2 or 3 buttons, Daisy can't have 2 or 5 and carrot nose can't have 4 or 5. Don't think this last point has been put into the table so that's something to start with.

Ever you ever done Sudoku puzzles? It's a similar principle.

So you know Daisy's snowman has a top hat. Put a tick in that box. You can then put a cross in all the boxes for top hat for the other people. The same for Duke and the flower. You know Daisy's snowman doesn't have a red scarf because her snowman has one fewer button than the one with a red scarf. That also means that Daisy can't have the maximum number of buttons (5). Nor can she have 2 buttons because she has 1 more button than the snowman with a carrot nose etc etc

Thanks all- got sept into chores, will give it another go. I understand the principle, 9and I liked Sudoko), just the info seems to jump around too much.

That just wasted about an hour of my life. Thanks! (Not sarcastic, love this sort of thing)

I kept getting confused on the 'one more than' and 'one less than' and crossing out the wrong box, so watch out for that!

My answer looks like this...

I used to love these puzzles - you used to be able to buy a book of them every month or two with a picture of a frustrated-looking man on the front. I wonder if you can still get them?

MuddledUpAgain · 26/03/2020 20:49

You can still get the magazine. Tesco sells it (and I think you can get a subscription as well!)

Vgbeat · 26/03/2020 20:54

I love logic puzzles sadly you can't get the magazine /book anymore. I tried a few months ago when I was having treatment but there are apps with them, not the same though

DanielRicciardosSmile · 26/03/2020 20:55

@MuddledUpAgain ahh thankyou, that's made my day! I'll look for it next time I do my essential shop (I know it's not an essential, but it's no worse than buying chocolate surely!)

Oilyoilyoilgob · 26/03/2020 20:55

You can still get them, I got two a few months ago for a holiday. Thankfully barely touched them so now have puzzles to pass some corona time 😃

Bigdogsmalldog · 26/03/2020 21:01

Puzzles like these are called Einstein puzzles if you want to try to tackle some others to practice.

It's often about process of elimination - if you know that Daisy built the snow person with 2 buttons, and that the snow person with 3 buttons has a purple scarf, then you know that Daisy did not put a purple scarf on her snow person (I didn't read the whole puzzle so Daisy may not have built a person with 2 buttons or without a purple scarf!).

DanielRicciardosSmile · 26/03/2020 21:19

I just found the subscription option, thankyou! All of a sudden, this isolation isn't seeming so bad...
