Even if it is for school ? 6th grade history teacher using TikTok to help teach? Am I being unreasonable?

Very odd considering there are MUCH better platforms that do not subject them to idiots.

Scrumptelicious · 26/03/2020 03:13

According to it's own terms, it's for over 13's only.

Leaannb · 26/03/2020 03:13

@differentnameforthis My thoughts exactly

It's not appropriate for education so yanbu

Dixiechickonhols · 26/03/2020 03:58

If everyone using it for class your child will feel awkward and odd one out. Install for the work then delete. It must have some educational benefit if the teacher is setting it. I’m in 40s but my mum was of view we didn’t need tech eg only house on street without a video or microwave. Not due to income, choice. I can remember being asked to do something with a video recorder at a friends house and having no clue and everyone laughing inc friends mum. As a result I am lacking in confidence with tech as an adult.

@dixiechickonhols Do you realize what TikTok is? I'm not afraid of technology. All of my children use it including my 5 yo. They all have their own laptops and the older kids including the 12yo have smart phones. They have use it in school even without the pandemic. They don't even use textbooks. They use chromebooks at school and their laptops at home. My issue is with the TikTok app in particular. I think there is a lot of risk for younger children for a 15 to 30 second video for supposed learning. Even the BBC has found that TikTok has failed to remove sexual predators from the site after they were caught soliciting and sharing pornagraphic images with children. The risk outweighs the reward and there are plenty of other avenues for the teacher to teach then random videos posted by strangers such as Zoom, google classroom and even youtube for kids. His Algebra records lessons and posts it on youtube. I find his history teacher lazy and encoiraging dangerous behavior by only ising tiktok

My 14 year old uses it. They can’t be setting all history work by Tik Tok. Use it for this exercise with you supervising then uninstall if you have safety concerns. Staff are doing best to set work to engage children at a very difficult time. Probably while caring for own babies and children. I wouldn’t want to single my child out, like I say my mum’s attitude affected me.

actiongirl1978 · 26/03/2020 05:17

I hate tiktok but I have relaxed the rules for this odd period. Social relationships v important for this age group and this helps.

DD12 was delighted when I said she could have it, plus WhatsApp and Instagram!

MsTSwift · 26/03/2020 05:19

At the moment my previous views on this stuff have relaxed somewhat.

actiongirl1978 · 26/03/2020 05:20

But Yanbu for not liking it

differentnameforthis · 28/03/2020 05:16

@Dixiechickonhols

No education benefit in watching 15 second or 1 minute videos for class work.

So many platforms, and this teacher chooses TikToK? The only person disadvantaging anyone is the teacher.

differentnameforthis · 28/03/2020 05:19

And there was much more at play by your mother refusing ALL technology, and it's a huge difference to the op objecting to ONE app!!

Dixiechickonhols · 28/03/2020 08:48

different we had some tech but I was odd one out on stuff that mattered to me as a tween/young teen. Psychological benefits of all class doing something fun together are important at this difficult time. Like I said I’m sure teacher has reasons for setting. If you don’t want child to do it just get child to email to say they don’t have that app. Lots of children won’t be able to do stuff from home as they don’t have access to tech or paper, printer etc. A classmate can probably tell her what it was. I wouldn’t waste teacher’s time objecting.

sixthtimelucky · 28/03/2020 08:56

There is nothing wrong with TikTok, I don't get the problem? Why do people hate it? It's not full of bile and hypocrisy like on Twitter, it's mainly memes and dances.

It's keeping my teens entertained, loads of families doing dances together on it, so bringing people together in fun little ways.

YABU

MonkeyDishwasher · 29/03/2020 03:24

@Leaannb You are not at all being unreasonable. It's actually been in the news before, that TikTok has been accused of having pedos and the like on there. And it's part owned by the Chinese, the implication being, that they'll steal your data and give it to the Chinese government.

MashedSpud · 29/03/2020 03:26

DH’s fifty year old friend goes on it....

differentnameforthis · 29/03/2020 04:41

@sixthtimelucky I don't hate it. But you cannot teach over 15 second and one minute videos.

TheMagiciansMewTwo · 29/03/2020 08:05

YANBU
Could you set up an account on your phone then let DC watch the teacher's video with your supervision?
I'd guess what the teacher is doing goes against all the school's safeguarding and IT policies. I wouldn't complain (because these are unique times) but I also wouldn't be letting my DC download it.

Dixiechickonhols · 29/03/2020 21:08

I’m imagining it was a fun thing to bring class together at start not full class via Tik Tok.
