My DD had her MMR jab as well as the other 3 that are on the schedule last Tuesday, everything seemed ok until Monday where she woke up with a raging temperature... runny eyes etc
She has now been put on antibiotics for what they think is an ear infection but they don’t really know as they wouldn’t see her due to coronavirus symptoms (she’s pulling her ears)
I’ve just read the NHS page about amoxicillin and it says shouldn’t have if she’s recently had jabs?! Does anyone know why? I can’t really find any further info on that.
I also know it says 6-10 days later they develop a fever and measles like symptoms but if that’s what it is she’s seemed to have it so badly. She’s woken up screaming twice already and she’s only been asleep half an hour.

We’ve been told not to give ibuprofen because of the risk it could be coronavirus which isn’t helping as her temp has not been lower than 38.5 today.

I’m worried, I’ve got no where to take her if this gets worse.
No one will see her because of her temperature.

Has anyone else’s baby had this bad of a reaction?

Maybe repost with the title any practice nurses around.

summerfruitssquash · 25/03/2020 20:08

How do I do that just copy and paste?

Hi OP I'm not a medical expert but google seems to suggest that there may be a link between reduced effectiveness of some vaccines if antibiotics are taken at the same time. It doesnt sound like its proven though as it must be a very difficult thing to study. So it isn't that the antibiotics and vaccine together are dangerous or could cause a reaction or anything like that. I would call the doctors again if the fever hasn't gone in a couple of days or it gets worse or there are any other symptoms

Selfsettling3 · 25/03/2020 20:09

Yeah copy your post and then start a new thread with the same info but a different answer. I hope you get the answer you need.

If I remember rightly the reaction to MMR vaccine comes in 3 waves.

Hiya, DS had same jabs last Tuesday too, and I could have written this. Called gp as thought ear infection, due to relentless crying and ear pulling but she wouldn’t see him unless there was actual discharge.

He’s still acting like he feels like bag of worms - Temps, mild rashes, will only eat sloppy food. I think these have just hit him fir six

summerfruitssquash · 25/03/2020 20:34

Thanks @Blondiecub0109 I’m really starting to panic. Is he the same with his temperature too?
It’s just not going below 38.5 and I really wish I could use ibuprofen! I hope he feels better soon, it’s nice to know it’s not just my DD who’s going through it because I started to feel like I shouldn’t have taken her!

His temp has been up and down over the past few days, in normal circumstances I would have given nurofen in top of calpol but haven’t this time cos of corona. I’m quite blase about temps as he had repeated adenovirus and brocholitis end of last year with temps up to 40.9c !

LipstickTaserrr · 25/03/2020 20:46

My DS had his jabs in Feb and just over a week later had a fever and was really not himself. I stayed up all night looking back through old threads and I was convinced he was going to be really unwell.
In the end I kept up with calpol, kept him in light clothing and did lots of night feeds and by the end of the next day he was back to normal.
I appreciate it's a worrying time but they say a temperature alone shouldn't be a concern.

summerfruitssquash · 25/03/2020 21:31

Thank you, it’s comforting to know she’s not the only one... she’s writhing around in her sleep and waking up every half an hour.
I wish more than anything I could give her ibuprofen. I fucking hate this corona shit

Also @Blondiecub0109 that sounds horrendous!! I can’t even imagine how awful that must have been!

Does paracetamol help with the temperature? If it is an ear infection it can be very painful for little ones too.

Blondiecub0109 · 27/03/2020 09:30

Hi just an update that my DS seems to be turning a bit of corner now ~10 days after jabs, he’s brighter, eating better and more interested in playing. @summerfruitssquash how are you getting on?

summerfruitssquash · 27/03/2020 09:56

Thanks @Blondiecub0109 , my DD had a real bad spike last night but she seems better this morning, or better than she has done in a while! Definitely more interested in playing! I’m glad your DS is feeling a bit better!! Hopefully this is the start of her improvement. I’ve been so worried about her

I'm glad to read that your DD seems to be feeling better. I've only just come across your thread but wanted to let you know that there is something that you can do for earache (I did this to myself last night as I've had agonising earache, and it definitely helped massively).

You put some warm, moist cotton wool balls/pads in the bottom of a paper or plastic cup and hold it over the affected ear. Apparently it changes the barometric pressure of the ear and reduces the pain. Not sure if that's true, but it definitely worked for me and I've been in agony for days with ear ache.

You can google it and there are also videos on YouTube.

I hope your DD stays well.
