Internet access and wfh

So scroll on by if you want i know I'm lucky to have a job and that I can wfh. But this happened and I wanted to gauge opinion or see if other companies have a policy.

I moved house last Friday. Had one day of annual leave booked for a few weeks. Planned to move over the weekend and be back in work on Monday morning. So on Wednesday evening we were told to work from home, on Thursday I logged on, did as much as I could despite system being down for a lot of the day due to to our many people logged on. Friday I didn't Plog on as I was off officially. Got a messsge to say that a skeleton staff was needed to go in this week, so I volunteered, being relatively fit and healthy. I was told to come in on Monday, which was fine, but then it changed and they closed the office building and all were directed to work from home. I reminded my manager that as I had moved I wouldn't have internet on Monday but that my wifi company were due to come on Tuesday to set up wifi.

Fast forward and they have only just come now, today. I kept in contact with manager explaining what was happening, that it was out of my control, that I was on the phone all day yesterday trying to get through, they were saying they were inundated and had low staff due to the situation.

Just got a messsge from manager saying she is taking these 3 days out of my annual leave,

Am very pissed off. Aibu.

I was available for work, I tried my best, it was out of my control,

I'd be livid

Sorry posted too soon in rage. Why have your work not provided you with a mobile phone and unlimited data to hotspot from? Mine do, in reality we all use our broadband but the company doesn't expect us to have it

Sarah510 · 25/03/2020 18:16

Yeah nothing even discussed when the decision was made for us to wfh. Just assumed we all would use our broadband, ( and that we all had it.. ) I guess most people do these days.

Sooooo.

What would they be doing if you didn't have internet?

MT2017 · 25/03/2020 21:18

So you volunteered, couldn't work due to no WiFi and they're removing three days' leave?

I would be absolutely fuming. Angry

FizzyPink · 25/03/2020 21:21

Did they not ask people in advance about their ability to wfh? We employ a lot of 20 somethings who mainly live in shared houses and everyone was supplied with an additional screen, laptop, headphones and an internet dongle if necessary in preparation.

AlCalavicci · 25/03/2020 21:27

I would find that very unacceptable to say the least ,
Get on to you HR ( if you have one ) and if you can , check your contract to see if it stipulates exactly how your holidays are booked / allocated .

we have to give a minimum of 2 weeks notice before we can have any time off and if for what ever reason we were made to take holidays ( it is VERY rare i have worked there 10 years and it has happened once when the building caught fire ) we are encourage to take holidays but not made to , we can take it as unpaid leave or work from home .

helgahelga · 25/03/2020 21:29

@Sarah510 WOW that is disgusting behaviour from your employer!

The shitty employers are really rearing their ugly heads aren't they?!

AntiHop · 25/03/2020 21:30

I'd be furious.

Beingyellow · 25/03/2020 21:33

Not acceptable. Should be put as some sort of paid special leave.

Theonewiththecandles · 25/03/2020 21:34

I'm definitely in the minority here but, were you expecting to be paid for 3 days when you did no work?
I think giving it as annual leave or unpaid leave are the only options surely?
