To think my baby is going to come early?

I'm 36 weeks pregnant and I have gestational diabetes, which is currently diet controlled and my blood sugars look good. I'm also Group B Strep positive.

For the past week my urine has had protein in it and my blood pressure has been rising. Today it was 150/90 which for me is a lot higher than what iti normally is. I'm booked in for a C-Section at 39+1 due to having inflammatory bowel disease and my colorectal surgeon wanting to reserve my pelvic floor as I have had major bowel surgery.

I've been told today that I have pregnancy induced hypertension and a Strep B urine infection, so I've been put on blood pressure tablets and antibiotics and I'm going to be monitored to see if it turns into pre-eclampsia as I have had some other symptoms such as headaches and swelling.

I can't see this turning out well and I'm starting to get worried that my baby is going to be here too early. I can't have steroid injections due to the diabetes and I'm worried about his little lungs and going into the neonatal care unit where there is only one visitor allowed (me) - though they've said it could end up being no visitors at all. :'(

Has anyone else been in this position and lasted through to their due date? If I can just make it to 38 weeks I will be happy!

I know you want to stay pregnant as long as possible, but 36 weeks is a good gestation to get to. Mine came a week earlier and was fine with no breathing difficulties.

Good luck and hope all goes well. Thanks

I had steroid injections with gestational diabetes, don’t see why you can’t? They can just put you on a sliding scale with insulin to control your blood sugar levels. I went into labour at 28 weeks though. I’d question it if I were you.

When is your next appointment?

37w is full term so may negate the need for neonatal.

If worst comes to the worst (no visitors Sad ) let me reassure that neonatal staff will look after your baby as it it were their own

DC3 spent 2 weeks in and I wasn't with her 24/7 - I went home to my older kids every evening etc... She was so well taken care of!!

That's good to know, @Waiting1987 - very reassuring and I'm glad there were no issues.

@MolotovMocktail Thanks for letting me know, I have no idea why they said I couldn't have them, they just said it was because of the diabetes. I'll ask them.

37 weeks is full term. My youngest was born at 37 weeks by CS. He came home the next day and only stayed in because I did. He was treated exactly like a 40 weeker.

Wannabegreenfingers · 25/03/2020 16:10

At 36 weeks he/she will be fine.

My 1st was born at 35 weeks at 5lb 5oz and home in 3 days. I had the infection after delivery as my waters had broken several days earlier, but he was fine. Just given cautionary antibiotics to be sure. He struggled to breast feed, but was a champion on a bottle.

Good Luck x

37 weeks is classed as full term so it might not be as bad as you’re fearing.
Good luck.

Thanks all. I think I've just had a bad day and getting myself worked up. Was told about the Strep B and the hypertension today, then to have comments like 'His lungs might not allow air in and he might go to the neonatal unit', '37 weeks is too early to be born', 'You might not be able to visit him' it's just freaked me out a lot. You've all made me feel a lot better.

My DD was born at 31 weeks. It is terrifying, I understand the fear.

RenegadeMrs · 25/03/2020 16:54

My DD was born at 36+1 due to placenta previa. I'd been given steroids and she was fine. We were in hospital a few days longer than normal for monitoring but she was with me the whole time. I also had a the warnings about intensive care etc as well. They have to do that, but its not at all a foregone conclusion that you'll need them.

Also, 37 weeks is considered full time and not at all too early!

RenegadeMrs · 25/03/2020 16:55

Full term even!

Jenasaurus · 25/03/2020 16:59

I developed preclampsia and had my DD at 32 weeks, she was small but healthy, she was in for 3 weeks and left weighing just over 3 pounds but she is now a 24 year old...One of the advantages you have is that they can inject you with steroids to mature the babys lungs, which they did with me, so 36 weeks is likely to be a very good outcome, best of luck with this

Wishing you all the best OP. If it’s any reassurance, my brother & sister (twins) were born in 1991 at 36 weeks 2 days and both were okay and needed no NICU stay. It sounds like they have just tried to prepare you for if he does need to go to NICU but they could have been more sensitive when you are feeling anxious. Hope all goes well and you meet your healthy little boy soon Flowers
