AIBU to still have new windows installed next week?

We arranged to have the majority of the windows in our home replaced prior to coronavirus outbreak and paid half up front (over £1,500). One of the main reasons we're having it done is that we're expecting a baby at the end of April and the window in our bedroom let's in a draft and is causing damp, which we wanted to resolve before the baby arrives.

I would be okay with waiting until all of this over, but I'm worried the company may go under and we'll lose our deposit. Company is still working.

One of the rooms isn't being done so me and dh would go in there whilst the work is being done, meaning we can stick to social distancing. Obviously we're taking all precautions due to my pregnancy and will wipe everything down once they've left.

Would you go ahead with it? Do you think this is allowed, since it isn't 'essential' work? Surely if everyone cancels on them the company will go under?

@Intelinside57 I think it's less than £100 a week though isn't it, and that's only if the company doesn't have savings?

Anyway, the company has let us know that they've closed until further notice, so problem solved. Glad it's not my decision, as I would have felt guilty either way. Hopefully this will all be over soon and we can go ahead when it is. Take care everyone.

How many workers will install your windows and how will they get to you and fit your windows while maintaining a distance from each other of 2m?

Cross posted.

How many more times do people need to be told?

@cologne4711 I think the government has said that emergency work (e.g. a plumbing issue) is essential and should go ahead. I guess my dilemma as you say was that it wasn't essential, especially as the weather has brightened up and the damp is less likely to be an issue at the moment. Hope you get your leak fixed!

I would postpone. I say that as someone in a similar position- twins due in 3 weeks and we are living in 2 rooms. Kitchen is a shell (no working cooker, no units, no appliances apart from a microwave and boxes piles up in the rest of the house etc) and baby room was due to have new carpet yesterday. I got absolutely slated when I asked if we could/ should continue with the work. Builders wanted to continue but in the end we decided to postpone until lockdown is over.

Call them up and cancel. Why have you not done that already Confused

I think you should ask them to postpone. I was going to have a large window changed to doors this week and the company have postponed it with date to be confirmed.

I wasn't too fussed and was happy to go along with their decision at the time but now upon reflection think they definitely made the right decision. It's for the safety of their workers. Even if I wasn't there, fitting Windows etc takes multiple people standing close together, also probably sharing a van etc.

New windows are not important right now.
